Jewelcrafting Guide
Apprentice Jewel Crafting – Skill Levels 1-50
1 – Learn your initial Jewel Crafting skill from any of the trainers located in the main cities.
2-30: 60 Delicate Copper Wire = 2 Copper Bars each.
- 120 Copper Bars
Delicate Copper wire is used in most of your early recipes so it is important to keep each on you make for use a little later.
30-50: 20 Tigerseye Band OR Malachite Pendant = 1 Tigerseye OR Malachite, 1 Delicate Copper Wire each.
- 20 Tigerseye OR Malachite
- 20 Delicate Copper Wire
Either gem works fine here and allows you to purchase the cheapest ones going or use prospecting with reasonable reliability to obtain your gems. It doesn’t particularly matter if you go for a full 20 of one kind or the other as the main people who will be buying these are enchanters.
Journeyman Jewel Crafting – Skill Levels 50-150
Increases your maximum Jewel Crafting skill to 150
50-80: 50 Bronze Setting = 2 Bronze Bars each.
- 100 Bronze Bars
Just like the Delicate Copper Wire from before you will want to keep all of these.
80-100: 20 Gloom Band = 2 Shadow Gems, 1 Bronze Setting, 2 Delicate Copper Wire each.
- 40 Shadow Gems
- 20 Bronze Settings
- 40 Delicate Copper Wire
Here we use up the last of the Delicate copper wire; depending on the price of Shadow Gems on your server this could well be a very expensive stage. Again, sell each one you make on the auction house for use by enchanters.
100-110: 10 Ring of Silver Might = 2 Silver Bars each.
- 20 Silver Bars
Depending on how lucky you have got you will not need a full stack of silver bars here, which is rather useful since they can be expensive. If the cost of silver is prohibitive you can make Rings of Twilight Shadows for 2 Shadow Gems and 2 Bronze bars but considering you just used 40 Shadow Gems it’s unlikely you’ll be able to get enough.
110-120: 10 Heavy Stone Statue = 8 Heavy Stone each.
- 80 Heavy Stone
Stone is dirt cheap on most realms so this makes for a very easy 10 skill points. You will not be able to sell the statues though so just vendor them.
120-150: 30 Pendant of the Agate Shield = 1 Moss Agate, 1 Bronze Setting each.
- 30 Moss Agates
- 30 Bronze Settings
The last of your Bronze Settings are used here; you will require a small trip to pick up this recipe from either Freewind Post or Menethil Harbor unless you wish to buy it off the Auction House for an inflated price.
Expert Jewel Crafting- Skill Levels 150-200
Increases your maximum Jewel Crafting skill to 225. You must be level 20 to learn this.
150-170: 50 Mithril Filigree = 2 Mithril Bars each.
- 100 Mithril Bars
Keep all you make for later use as with all over similar materials. You should skill past 170 making these, if you do it will save you on Citrine in the next step.
170-180: 10 Blazing Citrine Ring = 1 Citrine, 1 Mithril Filigree each.
- 10 Citrines
- 10 Mithril Filigree
Being one of the first spell power rings available these sell fairly reliably on the auction house. You should only have to make 5 or so of these with any luck, keep all the remaining Filigree’s for later use.
180-190: 10 The Jade Ring = 1 Jade, 2 Elemental Earth each.
- 10 Jade
- 20 Elemental Earth
The recipe for these is purchased from vendors in Ironforge, The Exodar, Silvermoon City or The Undercity. There might not be enough Elemental Earth up on the auction house but it is easily farmable from earth elementals in the Badlands or Arathi Highlands.
190-200: 10 Engraved Truesilver Ring = 1 Truesilver Bar, 2 Mithril Filigree each
- 10 Truesilver Bar
- 20 Mithril Filigree
Artisan Jewel Crafting – Skill Levels 200-300
Increases your maximum Jewel Crafting skill to 300. You must be level 35 to learn this.
200-210: 10 Citrine Ring of Rapid Healing = 1 Citrine, 2 Mithril Bar each.
- 10 Citrine
- 1 Stack Mithril Bar
Once again, unload these onto the auction house for sale to enchanters, if needed you can farm Elemental water in Arathi Highlands.
210-220: 10 Aquamarine Signet = 3 Aquamarines, 4 Flask of Mojo each.
- 30 Aquamarines
- 40 Flasks of Mojo
While the materials to make these can be expensive they are well worth it as depending on the enchant you get they can sell for far more than their crafting cost. Not only do people leveling desire them but they are also the best twink rings going for the level 39 bracket.
If there are no Flasks of Mojo on the Auction House they are easily farmable from trolls in Hinterlands or in Zul’Farrak.
220-225: 5 Aquamarine Pendant of the Warrior = 1 Aquamarine, 3 Mithril Filigree each.
- 5 Aquamarines
- 15 Mithril Filigree
Depending on how things have gone before you may have to make a few more Mithril Filigree’s for these but you should have enough in stock. Again put these straight on the auction house; they should sell reasonably well to melee classes.
225-245: 60 Thorium Setting = 1 Thorium Bar each.
- 60 Thorium Bars
As always, keep each one you make for later use.
245-260: 15 Ruby Pendant of Fire = 1 Star Ruby, 1 Thorium Setting each.
- 15 Star Rubies
- 15 Thorium Settings
You may require less rubies depending on how much skill you get making Thorium Settings, each of these will sell to caster classes for a good sum. You can also make Aquamarine Wards for this stage but we have already used a large amount of them so you might not be able to get enough.
260-280: 20 Simple Opal Ring = 1 Large Opal, 1 Thorium Setting each.
- 20 Large Opals
- 20 Thorium Settings
Unfortunately these will not sell anywhere near as well as some of the previously made items but will still be sought after by enchanters.
280-290: 10 Sapphire Pendant of Winter Night = 1 Blue Sapphire, 1 Essence of Undeath, 1 Thorium Setting each.
- 10 Blue Sapphire
- 10 Essences of Undeath
Essences of Undeath are usually common and cheap with all the people farming Stratholme for Argent Dawn rep or the Barons mount making this an ideal recipe to level on. Again, these should sell reasonably well to casters.
290-300: 20 Emerald Lion Ring = 2 huge Emeralds, 1 Thorium Setting each.
- 20 Huge Emeralds
Crafting these will take you up to your current skill limit; unfortunately they will not sell very well so it is best to price them appropriately for disenchanting. Afterward it’s time to head to Outland.
Master Jewel Crafting – Skill Levels 300-350
Proceed into Outland and learn Master Jewel Crafting from the jewelcrafting trainers in Honor Hold or Thrallmar – which will increase your maximum skill limit to 375. You must be level 50 to train learn this.
Jewel Crafting from this point on becomes a lot more random as all recipes you skill from will be yellow when you obtain them; as such precise amounts of gems required cannot be given. You will also now be mostly cutting gems rather than creating jewelery; with WotLK gems about now, all Outland gems are of very little value so are best vendored.
Common sense directs you to use the cuts of the cheapest gems you can aquire.
300-305: Brilliant/Glowing/Inscribed/Radiant/Solid/Teardrop gem cuts.
- 5-7 Uncommon Outland gems of any color.
305-315: Bold/Bright/Jagged/Sparkling gem cuts.
- 10-15 Uncommon Outland gems of Red, Green or Blue colour.
315-325: Glinting Flame Spessarite
- 10-15 Flame Spessarites
Only one type of gem here is learnt from your trainer, the rest are vendor bought patterns that would be an unnecessary cost.
325-335: Rigid/Smooth/Sovereign gem cuts.
- 10-15 Uncommon Outland gems of Yellow or Purple color.
I recommend not using any yellow or purple color gems until this stage as if you do not have a good access to Mercurial Adamantite you will need to cut these gems all the way to 350 skill which could take 50 or more gems.
335-350: 20 Thick Adamantite Ring = 1 Adamantite Bar, 1 Mercurial Adamantite each.
- 1 Stack Adamantite Bars
- 20 Mercurial Adamantite
If you have a supply of Mercurial Adamantite available this recipe is an easier way of reaching 350 skill than continuing to cut gems; once you reach 350 skill it’s time to head to Northrend.
Grand Master Jewel Crafting
Grand Master trainers are located in Dalaran, Warsong Hold and Valiance Keep. You must be level 65 to train Grand Master Jewel Crafting and it will increase your skill cap to 450.
The first thing you will want to do before proceeding is complete the quest “Gem Perfection” from your trainers in Northrend by handing in 2 Huge Citrine, 2 Dark Jade and 2 Shadow Crystals. This allows you to cut uncommon gems into gems of a higher quality that will sell for more.
350-390: Various uncommon gem cuts
- 50+ uncommon gems of any color.
The exact amount of gems you will require varies depending on luck; you will learn a huge amount of gem cuts so it is best to pick those that will earn you the best profit. You should be able to make a good profit just buying gems off the auction house and selling cut versions if you choose carefully; especially with the added value of perfect cut gems.
390-410: 20 Shadowmight Ring OR Stoneguard Band = 1 Eternal Earth, 1 Eternal Shadow OR 2 Eternal Earth each.
- 20 Eternal Earth
- 20 Eternal Shadow
- OR
- 40 Eternal Earth
Make a judgment based on which has the cheaper materials; both ring types will sell well to enchanters once made for disenchanting. You should also start doing your jewelcrafting dailies at this point. One jewelcrafting daily should take you less than ten minutes to complete and you’ll need the token to buy additional jewelcrafting recipes from the jewelcrafting trainer.
410-420: Various rare gem cuts
- 10+ rare gems of any color
Again if you are savvy you can turn a profit here with the right cuts; which ones are available to you will differ depending on which patterns you can acquire.
420-450: Skyflare Diamonds
Skyflare Diamonds are the cheapest meta gem you can acquire and can take you all the way to 450 skill; there’s no urgent need to power level past 440 skill.
Total Materials
If you follow this path exactly the following should be the amount of materials required to raise your skill to 440.
120 Copper Bars
20 Tigerseye OR Malachite
100 Bronze Bars
40 Shadow Gems
20 Silver Bars
80 Heavy Stone
30 Moss Agates
120 Mithril Bars
20 Citrines
10 Jade
20 Elemental Earth
10 Truesilver Bars
20 Elemental Water
35 Aquamarines
40 Flasks of Mojo
60 Thorium Bars
15 Star Rubies
20 Large Opals
10 Blue Sapphires
10 Essence of Undeath
20 Huge Emeralds
20 Adamantite Bars
20 Mercurial Adamantite
50+ Uncommon Outland gems of various colors
50+ Uncommon Northrend gems of various colors
20 Eternal Earth
20 Eternal Shadow OR another 20 Eternal Earth
10+ Rare Northrend gems of various colors
Jewelcrafting in Wow, at least according to Google, is by far the most popular profession in World of Warcraft. It leaves things like Leatherworking, Blacksmithing and all the rest in the dust. And it’s easy to see why. We’ve always said at Dominate your server that if you plan to raid on a toon or do serious PvP, you need to use the professions that give the maximum buffs to your toon.
And Jewelcrafting may be the gran-daddy of them all when it comes to making your character stronger. You can make a case for tailoring for casters and it’s sure nice to have a high level Enchanter, but with the exception of clothies it is really hard to beat the Blacksmithing & Jewelcrafting combo. No surprise that Blacksmithing is another very popular profession.
The crafting professions are always better for raiding toons. Herbalism is fantastic while you are leveling since it helps you track those annoying “gather me some weeds for my secret formula” quests, and Lifeblood is awesome for non healers. Some tanks might make an argument for mining, but you can squeeze so much more stam out of the JC only gems and the extra gem slots from Blacksmithing that I’m not sure it’s a valid argument.
In the end, Jewelcrafting is something you really need to consider when it comes to end-game professions. Which is probably why you are here. Jewelcrafting can be a real bear to powerlevel, and expensive to boot. Leveling Jewelcrafting from 1 to 450 is something you will probably not want to do more than once. But if you really need to get Jewelcrafting leveled and don’t want to waste a single dime for each skill point, there are certainly better and worse ways to go about it.
This jewel crafting guide is designed to be as efficient as humanly possible given how many variables there are in prices for mats for jewelcrafting across all servers. We’ve tried to give you not only the shortest distance between two points as far as 1 to 450, but also the jewelcrafting recipes and how many of each to make that will allow you to use as little as possible of gems that might be prohibitively expensive on your server.
In the end though, you’re going to have to pay attention to the jewelcrafting mat prices yourself as you shop or farm for your list. We’ve tested through this jewelcrafting leveling guide several times so that you can level your jewelcrafting from 1 to 450 with as little pain to your gold stash as possible. But if you find a great deal on three stacks of elemental water, you can just grab those cheap skill points and move on. In other words, this is a guide, but be smart – in other words, Dominate.
As usual, the members and regular patrons of Dominateyourserver may have a few tricks up their sleeve. Lawbringer will keep an eye on the thread and update this guide as things change or as we get tips from our readers that might improve this guide. have an idea of your own? Just drop it in the comments and we’ll take a look at adding it to the guide.
