Leveling the Hardcore Casual way

In the last few years Blizzard has made numerous changes to the “low level” game to help get players into Northrend as quickly as possible. XP is lower per level and quest rewards are increased, leveling a toon has never been faster. Add to that the Recruit-a-friend (RAF) program they implemented back in June 2008 to help push players into TBC content and we have an Altoholics paradise!

I am going to share a little set-up I have found quite useful for getting toons past the often tiresome lvl 1-mid 20’s, FAST. I am talking 1-20 in a single day of relaxed playing, or a single evening after work if you use Gavin’s guide or know the start zones well. The best part it is FREE! This article will focus on the lvl 1-20 program. It can be adapted to help all the way to lvl 60 as well, but more on that later.

Many players do not truly understand or appreciate the RAF program. They do not realize it can be a leveling tool; they don’t have any friends to recruit, so why pay attention right? A few of us Milk it for every level it is worth! To begin lets cover a few key points about RAF:

The RAF invitation includes a FREE 10day trial account for the “new player”

Once the offer is accepted the accounts are linked for 90-days, well past the 10-day free trial (more on this later).

This trial account is a Std trial account; it can’t trade, buy in AH, and is quite limited due to past abuses.

The trial account is Vanilla WOW, with no access to Blood Elf or Draenei starting areas.

When the linked accounts are partied together they both get TRIPLE XP for EVERYTHING that is not grey to them. That means mobs AND quests, but they must be partied to get the bonus.

Each toon can summon a toon from the other account once per hour.

For every 2 levels gained by the recruited account they can gift a free level to a lower level toon on the veterans account.

ALL bonuses stop at lvl 60.

After 1st paid month on recruit acct, the veteran acct gets a free month.

After 3 paid months the recruit account can gift one Zhevra mount to any single toon on the veteran’s account.

As you can see the benefits are quite large, and well worth exploiting. Now that I have outlined the base program for all of you I will throw some teasers and tips out to you to get you thinking about the next article.

Holidays; Blizzard is now giving xp for the holiday quests, the RAF program triples this too, so take advantage and get some easy triple xp! The recent Pilgrim holiday was a a perfect example and I actually double dipped. Those that follow DYS read about how easy it was to get 1-300 cooking skill for a few gold, but each quest kicked out 3x XP using RAF!! As a toon in my teens I was seeing 3500xp per quest!

Traveling: The free hourly summon ability is extremely handy. It works not only with the new alts, but all toons on both accounts. What I found worked well was having the toons hearthed to different places. Like one in Org and one in UC. Need to travel to TB or Org for a quest turn in, hearth the toon there and summon the other toon. Need to head back to UC for training your undead priest, hearth him home, train and then summon him back. Need to run to the next FP or quest point? Log onto a bigger toon , fly there, then summon the other toon to you. Log off the big toon, onto the new alt and use the trail to summon him. Bam, in minutes you safely made the journey. I actually used that to get both toons every FP in both continents when they were only lvl 20 over the course of a week.

That’s all for now, see what trouble you can cause and as always DOMINATE.

Alts are cool, chicks dig scars, DOMINATING is eternal.

Wicked of Dominate

In my previous article we shared a fairly common player type: the Alt-o-holic. At times the pull of this addiction becomes so strong that simply playing one alt is not enough. The altoholic finds themselves wishing to play multiple toons at once. Well we, at Dominate, are here to help!

I want to introduce you all to an extreme form of Altoholism called Multi-boxing. In the past this was typically called Dual-Boxing, but has in general changed to Multi-Boxing. Seriously, once you have 2 toons running, why stop there! ?

Some of you that have been playing the game for a while have probably had exposure to Multi-boxing already. Those that have experienced it on a pvp server arena, or battlegrounds most likely shudder just at the mention of Multi boxing. This is because you are one of the thousands of victims of this cruel form of Darwinism, a true “Peace thru superior firepower” solution to pve and pvp. For those unfamiliar with it let me paint you a picture before we go any farther.

Imagine being on a pvp server and innocently running out of Booty bay to go kill some Pirates. You look around to make sure nobody is close to gank you, all is clear so you begin casting on a mob but suddenly about the time your spell hit it’s target POOF you are dead. Wait, what just happened? You spin the camera around a there stands 5 shamys all waving at you simultaneously. You rub your eyes thinking your seeing things, they all move in one motion, maybe it’s a glitch because your pc is overheating… While you sit there wondering what happened you whatch them all mount up and run off.

No you were not imagining it, You just got Multi Boxed! Don’t despair, even the best player can’t overcome the sheer firepower that can be thrown out by a master Dual boxer.

Basic Set-up

There are various ways to set-up your computer(s) for what is called Multi-boxing. That is, running 2 or more sessions of WOW at the same time. These will typically fall into one of four basic formats.

running multiple computers manualy

running multiple computers using keystroke clone software

running wow multiple times on one PC manually

running wow multiple times on one PC using keystroke clone software

Multi-boxing is a subject that can and does fill entire websites. The set-up, macroing and software variations are far beyond what can be covered here. For real detailed information, help and up-to-date set-ups I highly recommend visiting http://www.dual-boxing.com and http://www.multiboxing.com they have everything you need to know about how to get set-up to dual box like a pro.

I have always in the past used the 1st option listed. It can be cumbersome to control and may not maximize output like the story example above, but it offers the benefits of tackling quests that require more than one character without having to look for someone to party with.

For the last month I used option 3 with two WOW windows and I click back and forth. Not very efficient and tedious to use, but I was up and running within seconds of logging on both toons. There really is no “set-up” other than tiling your wow sessions like shown.

Just this week I have begun the trial of using keyclone software, and while it has taken time to get going, now that I am figuring it out, it is the best way to go by far and worth a few days of research and set-up. Having all your toons locked together and casting/healing/targeting with one keypress is jus thte best way to go.

Character pairings

The combinations and ways of pairing your Dual boxing toons are about limitless, and vary greatly based on the player’s desires and playstyle. Usually dual boxers fall into one of two styles.

Pure firepower
This is a group like the one I mentioned earlier. Typically they are caster classes and rely on sheer dps to knock down anything in their way in one cast cycle, or 2 if the target is much bigger or elite. Some people will mix caster classes like mages, priests, shaman, and warlocks, others will stick to one class.

Balanced group
These players will stick with two maybe 3 classes in their little party. The group will typically have a melee toon and play more like a classic group meleeing mobs down, healing etc. Shaman are a very common toon in these as they offer offensive casting, totems and healing in one class while still retaining some armor for defense, druids and paladins are also a great choice. My preference is to run a Retribution Paladin lead with shaman in tow. Plate armor and solid dps backed up by heals and caster dps plus totems..

Since I was a manual Multi-boxer in the past, I typically ran a Balanced group format. My favorite pair by far has been pali lead and shamy follow. The pali as we all know is a very strong solo class, add to that the shammy with totems, heal and offensive spells make a nice strong team. Once they get up in levels they get reallt strong. Consecrate, Chain lightning and Magma totem make a Brutal AOE grinding package from an early level. I have run a shamy & Priest pair lately, and while strong, it does not compare to the Pali/Shamy

Now that I have a keyclone package working, I am experementing with the multi caster format and have a mage/priest pair up to lvl 6. I know it is not much, but I have never leveled a mage past 20 so it is a start! Talk about power though, it is something that cannot be appreciated until you try it!! Now I am debating on making another pair of toons to try 4boxing for the 1st time. However that requires additional accounts, and I will be covered in another article!

Alts are cool, chicks dig scars, DOMINATING is eternal.

Wicked of Dominate

Hello, Gustava here again. I’m currently testing the PTR ver 3.3 Fall of the Lich King part of the Wrath expansion. I will be previewing user interface in this artice of stuff i’ve seen in the PTR. I will be going over the new things on the PTR I think the people like to know and other things I find cool.

In Game tips

Remember back when you created your first character and it seemed like everything you do would make that little box with a question mark pop up at the bottom of your screen and demand your attention? Well, Blizzard has decided that their in-game tips are not quite as helpful as they should be. How could new players know that converting their small and innocent party into a raid would stop them from gaining quest credit? Or how would they learn that elite monsters and quests usually require more than one person to overcome? So they pretty much tripled (rough estimation) the number of tips they have – and made them prettier too.

what about fire

Wrath Reputation Increase (from patch notes)

Commendation Badges which award reputation with various Wrath of the Lich King factions can be purchased with Emblems of Triumph in Dalaran. Each badge costs 1 Emblem of Triumph.

Gaining reputation with the Ashen Verdict in Icecrown Citadel will grant players access to upgradeable rings from Ormus the Penitent. Players can switch between the type of ring (melee/caster/tank/healer) at any point in the upgrade path for 200g.

The following reputations have been sped up by roughly 30%:

Argent Crusade

Alliance Vanguard

Horde Expedition

Kirin Tor

Knights of the Ebon Blade

Sons of Hodir

Wyrmrest Accord

Sons of Hodir quests now give more reputation overall.

Top-level helm and shoulder faction-related enchants are now available as Bind-on-Account items that do not require any faction to use once purchased (they still require the appropriate faction level to purchase).

The 30% more rep in Heroics is a great move by Blizzard now you can get a lot of rep and emblems to gear your new 80′s faster. We all hate grinding rep for the Sons of Hodir for the 56th time this rep increase will make a lot easier and less like a chore. But the thing I really like is the BoA Shoulder and Head enchant. This simply means that you’re getting Raid-level enchants as soon as you hit 80 (assuming you can afford them) as long as you’ve done it at least once on any of your other 80s. Add to that a new upgradeable ring (like the old violet eye one in BC) will make every trash mob rep in Icerown as rewarding as the trash drops themselves.

New fishing event: Kalu’ak fishing derby

Tired of getting ganked in Stranglethorn Vale for the weekly fishing contest? Well worry no more as our favourite walking walruses, the Kalu’ak, are hosting their own fishing tournament in Northrend every Wednesday. Elder Clearwater is going to hang out in Dalaran for exactly one hour and wait for a Blacktip Shark that you have to catch and return to him. The event starts at 8:00 PM on Wednesday. During the contest all fishing in Northrend is free of trash. Don’t worry though as even if you don’t end up being the champion angler,
you’ll still receive a reward just for turning the shark in. On an achievement related note, the master of strangle achievement has been changed to Master Angler of Azeroth. Winning the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza or the Kalu’ak Fishing Derby will be enough to meet the requirements for the achievement. Also winners can win a rare heirloom(BoA) ring or a pair of boots that warps you to Booty Bay every 30 minutes (Yet another hearth-type product).

Emblems in 3.3

Bosses in Naxxramas, Obsidian Sanctum, Eye of Eternity, Ulduar, Trial of the Crusader, and all Heroics will drop Emblems of Triumph. Bosses in the Icecrown Citadel 10- and 25-player dungeons will drop the new Emblems of Frost. Choosing the Random Heroic Dungeon option via the Dungeon Finder (new in content update 3.3) and completing whatever dungeon is selected for you, will award you with two Emblems of Frost the first time you do it (this is in place of the daily Heroic dungeon quests which are being replaced with weekly raid dungeon quests).

Continuing to use the Random Heroic Dungeon option within that same day to complete dungeons will award you with two Emblems of Triumph each time in addition to those dropped in the instances. The random option can also select Heroic dungeons to which you may already be saved, so you can technically do every Heroic dungeon more than once in a day by continuing to use this option.

New Weekly Raid Quests(Npc who did heroic daily quests)

New weekly raid quests have been added to the game! These quests will give you a good reason to run the old raid instances for 5 emblems of Frost and 5 emblems of Triumph each week. Here’s the list for the bosses tnat have a weekly quest kill. One is picked each week for the quest.

The Obsidian Sanctum/Eye of the Eternity-Sartharion and Malygos

Naxxramas: Anub’rekhan, Noth the Plaguebringer, Instructor Razuvious and Patchwork.

Ulduar: Flame Leviathan,Ignis the Furnace Master,Razorscale, and XT-002 Deconstructor

Crusaders’ Coliseum/Trial of the Crusader: Lord Jaraxxus

Icecrown Citadel: Lord Marrowgar

New Armor Sets in Icecrown Citadel: Tier 10

The next tier comes out in 3.3 and to earn them is no simple task.

The first set of T-10 (251) is bought with Frost emblems costing 405 Emblems for the whole set: 60 frost emblems each for gloves and shoulders, 95 Frost emblems for head piece, chest plate and leggings.

The next set is 10.5 Sanctified (263) which you need the first set piece and a Conqueror’s Mark of Sanctification to upgrade the 10 piece into the 10.5Sanctified piece.

Same goes for 10 Sanctified heroic(271).The gear is in the ardent verdict camp in the raid.

The sets are modeled after Lich Kings troops , the Ashen Verdict and Faction Heroes.

Warrior – Ymirjar Lord’s – Elder Saurfang/Muradin Bronzebeard(link)

Well with 3.3 coming out in next week or two Bizzard has pulled all the stops to make it the biggest patch ever. With raids and dungeons for the PvE crowd and a new arena season 8 with Wrathful gear for the PvP crowd. Add to that impoved leveling with quest helper and new in-game tips for those who need to make new toons every day (Alt-a-holics). So whether you do PvE or PvP this patch can provide lots of entertanment for many weeks/months ahead. Wherever you go in the world of Azeroth always remember to Dominate whatever bizzard throws at you.

We’ve told you before to level cooking alongside of Fishing. You’ve heard us say over and over that cooking can get you some gold and how every class in the game can benefit something from cooking. You’ve also heard us tell you how big of a pain in the @$$ it is. Then THIS IS YOUR CHANCE. We’ll show you how to get cooking to 350 in an hour. There are complete guides to the actual festival itself out there but this article will focus exclusively on the cooking aspect of it.

It all has to do with Pilgrim Festival. This will require you to run from Undercity(Stormwind) to Orgrimar(IronForge) and ThunderBluff(Darnassus) but will net you a bit of gold and those precious cooking levels that are such a pain to get. Assuming you’ve got no skill in cooking you’ll want to get to Undercity and train up cooking at the Pilgrim Festival Cooking trainer. Buy the Bountiful cookbook from the vendor and open it up to pick up the 5 Festival recipes and learn the first one right away: Spice Bread Stuffing

Undercity/Stormwind

Buy:

60x Simple Flour

60x Mild Spices

Create 60x Spice Bread

The recipe will go gray on you at 40 but you’ll get to use the extra you buy to make the last few points. Once you’ve got 60x Spice Bread, combine it with 60xAutomnal Herbs (from Pilgrim Vendor) to make 60xSpice Bread Stuffing and get to 100 cooking (or a little more). Don’t forget to train up cooking before you get to 75 cooking skill or you’ll have to re-cook the bread. Learn Pumpkin pie recipe (at 100)

Buy

70x Ripe Tirisfal(Elwynn Pumpkin)

Create 70x Pumpkin Pie

Again remember to train up cooking when you get to 125 (but before 150). Once you hit 160 cooking, learn the Cranberry Chutney recipe and travel to your next destination (Orgrimar/Ironforge).

Orgrimar/Ironforge

Buy:

70x Tangy Southfury Cranberries(TangyWetland Cranberries)

Create 70x Cranberry Chutney

Again remember to train up cooking when your skill reaches 200 and before it hits 225. Learn the Candied Sweet Potato recipe at 220 cooking and move on to your next destination: ThunderBluff/Darnassus

Thunder Bluff/Darnasuss

Buy:

70x Mulgore Sweet Potato (Teldrasil Sweet Potato)

70x Honey

Create 70x Candied Sweet Potato

Train cooking between 275 and 300 and return to Undercity/ Stormwind for the last part of this adventure. This part will require you run around like a turkey after … well … Wild Turkeys

Go outside Undercity/Darnassus and kill Wild Turkeys and remember to loot them, you’ll need quite a few so don’t be shy they are scattered all over the start area and spawn rather quickly.

Back to Undercity/Stormwind

Buy:

140x Honey

70x Automnal Herbs

kill 70x Wild Turkeys

Create 70x SlowRoasted Turkeys

Voila! Your cooking skill should be at 350 or a little above (355?) In the process you’ve managed to accomplish all the seasonal cooking quests and have enough for 3 days’ worth of dailies. All of which should buy you more then enough Turkey Shooters to turn all the rogues you need for the achievement (assuming you don’t miss too often)

This is BY FAR the cheapest and most effective way to level cooking you’ll ever get. The recipes don’t go yellow until you’re 10 pts away from the next one (which is whyI make you buy 70 instead of the minimum 60 you really need). To be honest I didn’t do the math on this and it’s so cheap that I’m not even going to bother. 5-10 gold ? … the amount is infinitesimal, ridiculous even.

Regardless whether you do the seasonal events or not this is a DOMINATING way to level cooking and it only comes around once/year so better take advantage of it now or you’ll regret it come Christmas when you need to get your MerryMaker title. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Just remember, you will never be taken seriously as a player, for end-game content, if you don’t enchant and socket your gear.

Welcome to our next installment in the DK series. Today we cover Professions, Gemming, Enchanting and a few stats.

Professions:

JewelCrafting and Blacksmithing are you two top choices when it comes to professions for a DK. They combine the most Raid-Benefits to your character than any other professions. They are also the most expensive.
If you choose Jewelcrafting as one of your trade skills then you’re in for a treat. Jewelers’ Gems will be your best friends. You can have 3 of these unique Gems on your equipment with stats like 34 to Hit Rating or 34 to Strength and even 34 to Expertise that can produce results.
As a Blacksmith you’ll get two extra sockets to put those bad boys into.
One way to mitigate that expense, is to level Mining first while picking up twice as much ore as you really need. Get JC up and then drop Mining to pick up BS and use the remainder of your mats for that one.
If gold has always been an issue for you, feel free to pick up Gavin’s AH Mastery Guide

Your gemming priority is as follows:

Hit Rating

Strength,

Expertise / Armor Pen

Critical Strike

Enchants:

Strength

Attack Power

Critical Strike

Haste

Some Stats to make the above make sense

Hit Rating:

DKs and all melee classes share the same 8% cap on that, until you get 8% hit rating (263 Hit rating) this stat is your top priority. As long as your are not Hit capped you should be trying to get there. This is especially important when using a 2-H weapon, after all, every swing you miss is damage that you’re NOT doing.
Once you are Hit capped, Strength: you can never have enough Strength. For a DK 1 Strenght = 2 Attack power. Attack power directly translates into DPS …

Now the following comes from the guys at ElitistJerks.com. These guys really know the math.

Expertise vs. Armor Pen

Expertise
•1 Expertise Skill reduces the chance your attacks will be dodged/parried by 0.25%
•32.79 Rating is equal to 1% less chance your attacks will be dodged/parried.
•8.20 Rating is equal to 0.25% less chance your attacks will be dodged and parried (each) and thus is equal to 1 Expertise Skill.

Armor Penetration Rating
It doesn’t affect our damage from Diseases, Icy Touch, Howling Blast, Scourge Strike or Death Coil. This makes Armor Penetration have a reduced value for Unholy and Frost Specs. Blood however does have quite a lot of benefit from ArP Rating, due to the majority of its damage being Physical.
We need 15.39 Rating to ignore 1% armor on our target.

So although ArPen is cheaper to get (15.39 = 1% armor ignore) the Expertise affects both Dodged hits and parries which redure your DPS significantly. Bottom line, for a DK they are relatively equivalent because we use a slow 2-H weapon and Strength is always more valueable anyway, so gemming and enchanting for those stats may not be so wise. Don’t forget that most of your gear will naturally come with some of those stats

“What do I need to upgrade first?”

Just remember, you will never be taken seriously as a player, for end-game content, if you don’t enchant and socket your gear.

WoW-Heroes.com

WoWHead.com/profiles

Both have a fantastic tool to look at yourself in the mirror so to speak. Using those web sites you can see, at a glance, what your character has equipped, what he is missing, what upgrades are available and where to find them.

That’s it for this installment of the DK series, tomorrow we’ll cover the finer points and before we’re done we’ll have gone over the gear as well .

Optimize Your Profession Selection For Maximum Low Level Earnings

Whether you’re starting your first toon or your 20th, you have one of two goals in mind. One is to get to 80 as fast as possible, and in that light we tend to tell folks to not even mess with professions until 80. But if you are making a toon to end up being a gathering profession alt in the first place, then you certainly want to maximize your time and effort. It is entirely possible to keep skinning, mining and herbalism completely maxed out as you quest.

Not all zones are created equal when it comes to the gathering professions. In case you didn’t notice, Teldrassil is a giant tree, so there isn’t a single copper node on the whole thing. Your new Night Elf warrior is going to be completely out of luck until you hit Darkshore if you choose to do the Nefl starting area. There are way around this, however. You don’t HAVE to use the Orc starting area just because you’re an Orc. In other words, once you decide which profession you want to level, go level in an area that lets you gain levels and skill-ups in both.

With that introduction, here is a list of all the starting areas and what gathering professions they support better than other professions or zones. It’s not unreasonable to hit level 20 or so with a couple hundred extra gold just for picking a few flowers or swinging your pick along the way.

Alliance

Dun Murogh – Dwarf/Gnome: This is probably the best gathering profession zone in the entire game. No matter what you choose, there are plenty of mines, herbs and almost everything is skinable. It just doesn’t get any better than this.

Teldrassil – Night Elf: Teldrassil is good for both Herbalism and Skinning, but there isn’t a single mining node.

Azuremyst/Bloodmyst Isles - Dranei: The Dranei starting areas are bigger and more spread out than Dun Murogh. Although there is a bit of everything, it’s the worst of the areas for gathering overall.

Elwynn Forest – Human: You won’t do much skinning in Elwynn, and it’s better for mining than herbalism.

Horde

Durotar – Orc/Troll: Durotar isn’t terrific for any of the professions, you’ll have to wait until you get to the Barrens to start cleaning up on Mines and Herbs. It is, however, far better for mining. Both areas are OK for skinning as well, but the place is so huge that you can spend a great deal of time running from node to node.

Silverpine – Undead: This is by far the best place for Horde toons for both Mining and Herbalism. There isn’t a better Herbalism location anywhere else, actually, as it beats Dun Murogh and is very close to UC. Not terrific in the skinning category.

Eversong Woods – Blood Elf: Decent all-around for gathering professions, but nothing like Silverpine.

Mulgore – Tauren: Not bad for herbalism, and just ok for mining and skinning.

The best overall choices for each faction run toward Silverpine for Horde and Dun Murogh for Alliance. The proximity to both IF and Undercity make these two zones perfect for getting training without having to run very far, and the zones are packed full of almost every type of node or skinable mob.

If you like to run instances at level – SFK is also a really good option for Horde, although there really isn’t a great choice for Alliance. Well, maybe Balckfathom deeps, but as a general rule we skip instances unless we’re just leveling for the heck of it. Getting to 80 faster is our typical advice, but breaking up the monotony of a speed leveling grind with an instance here and there for gear isn’t all that bad.

This information will probably be the biggest help to those of you who are firing up a new toon on a new server. Getting that first toon grabbing some sellable stuff right off the bat to begin your banking life can be important. DK’s are the best for this sort of thing of course, but if a DK is not going to be your main (and please tell us it’s not) then you’ll be leveling up something else anyway. Might as well earn some decent gold along the way by using gathering professions while you level, and then switching to your end game professions at 80.

But at the very least, you now know the best zones for each gathering profession, and in a small way it can help you be more efficient and earn more money on your next new toon. It might not win you any awards, but it’s at least a little Dominating.

We’re a big fan of nifty peripherals here at DYS, just in case you hadn’t noticed, but every now and then even we get blown away. Every month or two we test a new product in the market to see if it offers something more for our readers. In order to get a review at this site, the thing really has to add something to the wow experience for the novice and pro alike. Not making our cut doesn’t mean it’s a bad product, just that it doesn’t meet our Dominating and demanding flavor.

But every now and again we come across something that actually changes the way we play. The Sennheiser headphones are great, but won’t really make you a terrific player. The G13 game pad will – I still use both of them every single time I play. But the Razer Naga blows away everything we’ve ever reviewed by such a huge margin that it’s a little hard to know where to start saying just how good it really is.

First things first, then. It’s a standard size mouse (even though the button field looks pretty intimidating in the pic above) with 12 extra keys on the thumb side (for righties anyway). That is the big difference between the Naga and every other mouse on the planet. It has the standard left, right, scroll, scroll click, four and five buttons as most gaming mice – but adds twelve more keys for your thumb. One look and we KNEW we had to give it a spin.

How Does It Feel?

In just ten seconds it was apparent it was the most comfortable mouse ever. It’s like holding hands with your sweetheart. The texture is just smooth enough to be soft, just matte enough to be completely slip free. Not only do your index and middle finger glide into the perfect rest position, but there is a little shelf for your ring finger and a cup for your pinky that actually make it more relaxing to have your hand on your mouse than anywhere else. You hate to let go of the thing to type. So in the tactile area the Naga gets a 10+ out of 10.

Cursor Response

The drivers are super easy to install both on Mac and PC. The interface is clean and offers a degree of movement control that is nothing short of outstanding. It supports Dpi ranges from 100 to 5600 – which is a range from nearly dead turtle to fighter jet speed. You can also adjust the acceleration factor and frequency response over broad ranges. But the really slick part is that you can set it to control the X and Y axis Dpi independently. That is a real WoW factor. If you use a wide screen setup it is so nice to have the cursor move faster from left to right than up and down. Cursor response and setup = 10 of 10

Movement and Function

Most mice have a few little slip pads on the bottom and a big bright lazer or whatever. This beauty has a slip ring around the entire perimeter of the bottom, which makes it glide like butter. It even has an extra slip ring that completely surrounds the invisible lazer orifice. One thing is for certain, if your mousing surface isn’t completely clean, you’ll know it in about half a second. (we also prefer the Lazer exact mat for all our mice, but it’s especially nice with the Naga). I prefer a free-wheeling mouse, but since very few have that option I can’t deduct too much for the incremental scroll. The four and five buttons are right up at the very front and absolutely WILL give your a hand cramp if you try to use them very often, but we’ll get to why this makes almost no difference later. And, finally the button clicks are easy enough to make without much force, but firm enough to avoid lots of accidental clicks – pretty much perfect. Movement and function = 9 of 10

Extra Juice

Now we get to the good stuff. Those 12 extra buttons are so good it’s not even fair to rate this thing against other mice. It turns all those other mice into meece. There’s everything else – and then there’s the Naga. I pitched my G3 in a drawer for good and didn’t have a qualm in the world about doing so – and I loved that mouse. Even apart from the extended functionality, the Naga is just a much better overall mouse, but those extra keys are WAY past incredible. And then I played with them.

I fully intended to try to use as little hyperbole as possible, but that’s completely impossible in this situation. Compared to every other mouse I’ve ever used – and I go through mice like a tomcat, the Naga would have no peer, leaving even the G3 completely in the dust. But those extra buttons make it so different that it becomes completely unfair to all the other mice in the world. If the G3 (a really good mouse) rated a 45 out of 50, the Naga (even without the buttons) would have raised the bar to 60, and that’s no kidding. Those 12 new buttons put the bar at 100, and we’ll put the Naga right there 95 out of 100, which means there really isn’t any way to compare apples to apples. everything else just got pwned.

That extra button pad automatically binds to either the: 1 through = keys on your keyboard or the number pad keys, whichever you prefer. I already had bar one and two in Bartender assigned to those suckers as it is, so with the flip of a switch I can use my one mouse to toggle 24 keys – it’s so slick you have to use it to believe it. And then comes Vuhdo – yikes.

Plug this thing into Vuhdo and you are one little macro command away from complete and total healing Domination. And, in reality, it could almost make the choice between Healbot, Grid/Clique and Vuhdo closer to meaningless than ever before. We’ll discuss that macro in the next article since it’s so slick and useful for so many other situations, but just know that you probably would never use it nearly as much without the Naga.

You’re Wasting Time Here!

All there is left to say is get one. Get one right this minute. Do not pass go, do not argue, just get it and Dominate. Ask for it for Thanksgiving, your birthday, Christmas and New Years. Beg, borrow, cheat, lie, steal or work like a fiend until you can get one. Get up from your chair right now and go to the store – yes, it’s THAT good. Once you plug this dude in, you’ll find 50 new ways it can improve your WoW life in about 5 minutes. I am seriously excited about this thing, as if you couldn’t tell, but it really is the single best gaming peripheral I have ever seen.

If you can’t stand it, and we’ve done our job, you can click on the pic at the top of this article (or below) to go directly to Amazon and get one for yourself. You don’t have to use our link, of course, but honestly, once you use the Naga you’ll never know how you played with anything else. Go get one, and bring your Domination to a whole new level of pwn.

Professions for the Tank: an exercise in futility if you get it wrong

My personal choice for professions is based solely on what they bring to the fight. As a Tank you are expected to be the best you can be and nothing less. As much as I like some of these professions and most of them can be quite useful, they are not all equal for the role we play in a group.

This article will help you determine what professions are best for you as a Paladin Tank:

Herbalism: a Heal over time every 2 minutes that will sometimes save you … but it’s a HoT and if your healers are on the ball it’s relatively useless.

Alchemy: Twice as long potions/flasks and a minor effect increase: that’s nice

Inscription: No farming Sons of Hodir rep for the shoulder enchants, “scroll of Recall” is handy but overall, lacks a little luster for my tastes.

Skinning: Crit bonus: not exactly our most praised stat as a tank.

Leatherworking: Utterly USELESS in a raid.

Engineering: Handy and fun to tinker with, expensive to level, it had its uses when Palys didn’t have any ranged abilities, but now is not nearly as efficient as other professions.

Enchanting: Extremely profitable if you’re using the AH Mastery Guide but useless to a Tank… better suited to Tailors/Cloth wearers)

Tailoring: Even more useless then leather working, unless you absolutely MUST ride your flying carpet into battle!

Blacksmithing: Expensive to level, but adds 2 Prismatic sockets to your gear: extremely convenient and very useful.

Mining: 60 Stam bonus when maxed along with the ability to make Titansteel, and gather Ore.

Jewel crafting: Finally the BEST (and arguably the most expensive) profession for a tank: Jewelers’ gems baby … that’s what it’s all about. Especially at early levels this single ability can make the difference between sitting out a raid at 535 Def rating and picking up all the gear that drops in a single run just because nobody needs it. This will allow you to customize your character more then any other profession in the game, it gives you versatility and is an absolute MUST when upgrading gear since you may have to re-socket 2-3 pieces just to be able to wear the new whatever you just won.

For my money Mining and JC are the best. Some will argue Blacksmithing for the two extra sockets that will hold prismatic gems. All I have to say about that is: if you’re going to fill those up with Stamina (like you should) then Mining is a direct equivalent with the 60 Stam Mining bonus (2x 30Stam gems), it’s far cheaper to level, you’ll actually MAKE money with it and it will subsidize your other expensive profession: Jewel crafting!
For other classes that would like to add versatility or fill the need for a very specific stat (Druids & Armor Pen) then Blacksmithing and JC are the better (and most expensive) way to go.

Gems you want:

Blue: Stamina, Stamina and MORE STAMINA!

Red: Strength > Expertise > Attack Power

Yellow: Defense Rating > Hit Rating > Crit.

Orange, Green, Purple: Pick any of the stats above and get the corresponding mixed one.

Now let’s go over what enchants/Gems you want to have on your gear.

Head

Arcanum of the Stalwart Protector: 37 Stam; 20 Def – Argent Crusade: Revered

Arcanum of the Defender: 16 Def; 17 Dodge – Keepers of Time: revered

You’ll want to get to Revered with Argent Crusade as soon as possible since you’ll be putting that on every helm you will ever wear during your career as a tank.

Meta Socket

Austere Earthsiege Diamond 32 Stam; +2% Armor from gear

Eternal Earthsiege Diamond 21 Def; +5% Block Value

In the beginning you might want to consider the Eternal for the Def bonus but could easily migrate to the Austere as your gear gets better (2% of 25,000+ is nothing to sneeze at)

Shoulder

Greater Inscription of the Pinnacle: 20 Dodge; 15 Def – Sons of Hodir: Exalted

Lesser Inscription of the Pinnacle: 15 Dodge; 10 Def – Sons of Hodir: Revered

Master’s Inscription of the Pinnacle: 52 Dodge; 15 Def – Inscription (400)

Sons of Hodir are the only faction that sell Shoulder Enchants. You will have to grind that rep eventually, so might as well get the (super) long quest chain going while you’re making your way to 80. This is a must since you’ll need that rep for every shoulder enchant regardless of what you choose to do with your Paladin Character.

Cloak

Enchant Cloak: Titanweave 16 Def

Enchant Cloak: Major Agility 22 Agi

Enchant Cloak: Mighty Armor 225 Armor

Enchant Cloak: Superior Agility 16 Agi

Enchant Cloak: Steelweave 12 Def

Agility is far from being the best stat for Tanking but it goes a long way when it comes to avoidance. In this particular scenario when you start having choices you can keep the Titanweave enchant and start changing out some of your Gems instead.

Chest

Enchant Chest: Super Health275 Health (roughly equivalent to 21 Stamina for Paladins)

Enchant Chest: Powerful Stats +10 to All stats

Enchant Chest: Greater Defense 22 Def

Enchant Chest: Super Stats +8 to All Stats

Heavy Borean Armor Kit 18 Stam

Greater Def has most itemization and will definitely help with reaching the Def cap initially but you might want to consider Powerful Stats as your end-game raiding chest enchant since Paladins are one of the few classes that actually benefit from most of the 5 stats (Str, Agi, Stam, Int, and less from Spirit)

Wrists

Enchant Brace: Major Stamina 40 Stamina

Enchant Bracer: Major Defense 12 Def

Fur Lining: Stamina 90 Stam (Leatherworking 400)

Here again Defense until you reach the Cap and then switch to Stam. You can never have too much Stam: Ask any healer.

Hands

Enchant Gloves: Armsman 10 Parry; +2% Threat

Enchant Gloves: Major Agility 20 Agi

Enchant Gloves: Precision 20 Hit

Enchant Gloves: Expertise 20 Expertise

Enchant Gloves: Major Strength 15 Str

Reticulated Armor Webbing 885 Armor (Engineering 400)

Hand Mounted Pyro Rocket 1654-2020 Fire Damage on a 45 sec CD (Engineering 400)

Armsman is your best bet initially from a Defensive stand point, although you may want to consider the Strength (even if it is a Burning Crusade Enchant) for more DPS down the line.

The Jormungar Leg armor is far cheaper than the Frosthide, so if you plan to upgrade soon you may want to hold back if money is an issue.

As expensive as you think Blood Draining might be, an instant heal worth 2000 health that only procs when you need it (fall below 35% health) is about as good as it gets. It’s the equivalent of 200 Stamina … no other enchant even comes close.

Titanium Plating 81 Block Value

As with other pieces of gear, initially you’ll want the Def to reach the Cap but should switch to Stam or Block Value down the line. (81 Block value is far from negligible).

This should cover most of our bases when it comes to upgrading our gear and will show you most of your options. Knowing is half the battle, now you KNOW: get out there and Dominate!

When we left off, I had just left Tankzilla’s group because he pulled a whole room and we wiped and the hunter ninja-hearthed after winning an EPIC () two-handed mace.

About 2 minutes later, I got an invite to another group from someone we’ll call Dwarfadin. “To [Compy]: Please heal DM, we have a good group.”

He was at least polite, so I joined. Too bad Dwarfadin’s and my ideas of a “good” group seemed to be radically different. On paper, sure, the group seemed OK. Dwarfadin himself was only level 16, a bit low for Deadmines, but there was a 22 Rogue, a 20 Warrior, and an 18 Hunter. Before we got inside, the warrior felt the need to announce to everyone that he wasn’t a tank, and Dwarfadin said it was ok because he was.

Ok. Level 16 tank. I felt like perhaps I could heal him through it, although Van Cleef might have been trouble. I really didn’t care if we killed Van Cleef, I already had my Staff of Westfall. I was just there for XP.

As we fought our way to the entrance, I kept expecting Dwarfadin to pull out his shield. While we were outside, away from any elites, it didn’t really matter, after all. But, after we get in and he starts pulling, and by pulling I mean running around and attacking everything randomly, I noticed he still had his 2H Axe.

I figured he may have just forgotten to put on his shield. I can understand how melee classes can get caught up in fighting, especially when they’re attacking things randomly and ignoring the casters, who are lobbing giant fireballs at the healer, and not killing the mobs who run off with 4 hp to bring back 3 friends who go straight for the healer who decides to just spam Holy Nova over and over…

So I asked Dwarfadin where his shield was. He said he didn’t have one. I was shocked (well, maybe not so much); ANOTHER paladin who thinks he can tank sans-shield! Having horrible, Tankzilla flashbacks, I told him he was “[expletive deleted] stupid.” Then he said he had a shield, and he would use it on the boss. Fine, I said, “then I might heal you on the boss.”

For the rest of our adventure, Dwarfadin asked me to heal him with increasing intensity. Eventually he was yelling:

“COMPY YOUR MANA HAS NEVER BEEN BELOW 500 HEAL ME!”

I healed the rogue, the “fury” warrior, and the hunter’s pet, Bongles, but I never healed Dwarfadin.

I calmly explained that if he’d had a shield, I would heal him.

Then he said, “I’m a DPS tank!” and called me a terrible healer, and I was kicked out of the group.

Adventures in Healing – Part 1

So, some people have decided to go start playing allies. “Ok,” said I, “I shall make a Priest!”
Not only that, I will level as Discipline spec! Off to a new server, soon I gave birth to Compy, the level 22 human priest. I thought it would be fun to heal my way to 80 in instances and simultaneously prove my theory that allies are dumb. Boy, was I right.

Today, I was invited into a group for The Deadmines. The group consisted of 2 paladins, a hunter, a warlock and me.

The paladin who was “tanking” was level 22 but thought he was level 74. He ran around pulling as many of the non-elite peasants and elite guys as he could. He also did so in quick succession with no regard for my (or anyone else’s, including his own) mana pool. Did I mention he was using a 2-Handed Sword? At least he knew enough to use Righteous Fury. Let’s call him Tankzilla.

The other paladin in the group was also using a 2-Hander because he was “DPS.” Oh, but that didn’t stop him from using Righteous Fury too! In fact, that was the only spell he cast the entire time. His mana was locked at 100% and didn’t budge. I’m not an expert on paladins, but don’t they get more than Retribution Aura and Righteous Fury by level 20? Maybe he didn’t want to pay the gold to train all those other useless abilities.

Before we even got into the instance, the EPIC LEWTS started a-droppin’, and by EPIC LEWTS I mean Weighted Sap and Medicine Staff of the Wolf. Predictably, the level 16 Hunter in the group NEEDED every green, much to the dismay of the poor level 17 warlock who flooded party chat with threats to leave if “that $#%@ hunter wont stop needing!!!” Eventually, the hunter started passing and that made the warlock happy. So happy that he would disenchant what he won in the middle of battle.

Due to my epic healing skill, we defeated Rhahk’Zor, the first boss. We stood around for the patrol to come, killed it, and then Tankzilla the Zealous pulled the entire next room. After all that, the final roll for Rhahk’Zor’s Hammer came in. It was the hunter. He needed. I mean, look at those epic hunter stats!

Then, the Hunter left the group and hearthed. The Warlock was so pissed.

Shortly afterward, we wiped, and I get a whisper from Tankzilla:

To [Compy]: can u rez at all?
To [Tankzilla]: I can run back to my body and rez
To [Compy]: kk do that
To [Tankzilla]: How old are you?
To [Compy]: 13, why?

/leave
