Herbalism Leveling Guide – Herbalism 1 to 450

Herbalism is easily the best of the gathering professions when it comes to making gold. You can make a little more gold per stack with mining, but there are fewer nodes to farm overall. But with herbalism there are zones simply packed with herbs. Whether you are using herbalism as a leveling profession or as money-maker, our Herbalism Guide will walk you through the whole process step-by-step.
There are two main reasons to choose herbalism. The first is as a gold-maker. Herbs sell very well and there seem to be far fewer herb farmers than miners. We can’t say much about skinning because it’s been at the bottom of the gathering profession heap for a long time. You might only pick skinning (and that on an alt) if you also have leatherworking.
Inscriptionists and Alchemists use loads of herbs, and since they are not farmed as heavily as metals on most servers they tend to carry nice stack prices. Combine that with the fact that you can fill up your bags with herbs much faster than metals and you have a winner. You know we’re not fans of farming at DYS, but if you’ve got to do it, at least make the very best use of your time.
The second reason for using herbalism is for leveling. And in our book it’s the best reason for almost any toon. If you’ve never seen how OP Lifebloom is at lower levels you’re really missing out on something. For classes like rogues and warriors lifebloom is simply ridiculous. If you keep your herbalism maxxed out for your level Lifebloom will typically heal you for about half your health. You can almost get away with not eating, or at the very least it gives you aggressive types another health potion for big or chain pulls.
Combine Lifebloom with herb tracking and it can save you oodles of time on quests as well. It’s really amazing how many “go get me fiddleweed for my secret formula/recipe” quests there are. With herb tracking on you can concentrate on the kill quests and never search for the odd-looking purple weed hidden in the crooks of trees any more.
I’ve used herbalism on the last five toons I’ve leveled and it really is a life and time saver. I typically dump gathering professions on toons I plan to raid with since crafting professions provide better buffs, but I tend to keep at least one herbalist around and might even do a little farming if I’m bored and don’t mind flying around a bit in Storm Peaks for flask mats.
Nothing is better than a Tauren druid with herbalism. Herbing without dropping out of flight form is simply unfair, and almost makes farming herbs worth it. I still say “almost” because I hate farming in general, but it’s just about as close to Dominating with farming as you can get.

So uhh, not to be critical, but i don’t see anything in here that tell you how to best level your herbalism, which was the point for most other 1-450 type posts on DYS to date. Good info however, i use Herbalism aswell, it makes for good gold through all levels with or without Alchemy. (for those who are looking for herbalism leveling guides, ive found a couple on google using those keywords.)
Scratch that comment, i totally passed over the link and didnt notice it. Good job overall.
I don’t mean to be critical eather, but.. A lvling guide for Herbalism is as necessary as a guide for… Well, something very very easy
Geif for Engineering or LW soon please
The link to the full herbalism guide is in the first paragraph. Instead of putting all the ancillary information in the guide itself, we tend to do a second post like this one with the general goop and then the guide itself can be all clean and tidy. It won’t be long before we have links on the sidebar for all the profession guides anyway. Just think of it as web guys doing weird web things – but there really is a reason for everything.
If you click on Professions at the top of the page you’ll find that of the three guides we’ve posted this week – one just happens to be Leatherworking. I’m going to try to get all the others up on the profession page in the next two weeks – which also means first aid and skinning – not sure how I’m going to get a full “guide” out of those, but we’ll see how it goeth.
I hate myself for doing this – I feel like a grammar cop on trade channel. But, having 450 inscription and getting asked in trade to make things for them: I have one little beef.
There is no such thing as an inscriptionist. One who inscribes, or creates an inscription, is called a scribe. I know, I’m marking myself down already.
Having said that, I buy out herbs on AH every day. A friend of mine says she makes 2000g a day if she farms herbs. Another friend makes 20000/wk farming herbs and ore (using a mod to cycle tracking between the 2 professions). I suspect they are still under 500g/hr mark, whereas being a scribe I make about 1000g/day, but it takes me under a half hour to do so. But I easily buyout 200g-300g of herbs a day.
All new toons I like the idea of herb/mining until 80. And then switching to something raid appropriate then, as it is far easier to level when you have all the cash at hand.
My 2 copper’s worth.
Well noted on the grammar Eiry – but just so that you don’t think we are goofballs . . .
Any time you are even trying to do things well on the web you have to go where the people are. Location, location, location right? Search engines give us those “locations” in the form of keywords. A post concerning a certain subject needs to contain a certain variety and density of those words in order for anyone to find it. We work hard to provide the best, most relevant information and we want folks to be able to use it, so we have to also strive to make it search-friendly.
Much to your chagrin it means having to use words from time to time that are not exactly “proper.” But I offer you a different viewpoint. The real function of words is to convey meaning through the communication process. What was strictly proper in 1810 or 1610 is quite different today because languages are living organisms of their own. New words are being invented all the time and are being added to the lexicon of the language. That whole process allows people to communicate more effectively over time.
So while ‘inscriptionist’ isn’t exactly a word you would use to describe an old testament scribe such as pharisees, it is a term used by people who play world of warcraft and conveys the meaning of “someone who has taken the inscription profession.” In that sense, it conveys an even more specific meaning to a certain set of people. It may not be proper grammar, but it is precise communication.
Ten years ago if you had used the word Muggle you would have been told that it wasn’t even a word and stop being so silly. Now it’s in the Oxford dictionary. Just a thought about the difference between grammar and communication. And if that’s not enough I’ll just say that Google made me do it. Google isn’t the devil, but it can be close.
Pretty sad that you didn’t even use the word “scribe” in the article at all, in that case. :p
