The Lifecycle of a Guild – A short history of [Guild Name here]
Posted on November 27th, 2009 by Agorg under Alliance, General Tips, Horde, Humor, News, World of WarcraftAnyone who’s been playing on-line games for a while will understand where I’m coming from with this and Dominate is no exception. Every guild/group/association goes through this, be it in WoW or even in real life to a certain extent.
If you haven’t guessed it yet this is going to be one of those thought-provoking-life-changing-deep-seeded-realization articles (or some reasonable facsimile
)
As we speak Dominate on Fenris is going through it’s 4th iteration (cycle). Some of the players are new some have been here since the beginning and yet others are returning after a hiatus but all share a common goal. Any guild that is to survive this cycle must have one if nothing else to truly rise from the ashes: a purpose.

The Birth:
Dominate (for those who don’t know yet) is a loose association of like minded individuals that stems from a web site (www.DominateYourServer.com). It all started on the web with Gavin putting up tips from time to time to help anybody get better at WoW. Over time this eventually lead to the creation of guides: Horde Leveling guide, AH Mastery guide. Popular demand is the real reason there is a Dominate guild on Fenris in the first place. When the guild was started everyone had a common goal: Dominate, Raid and Progress through content as a group. And we did through every cycle to varying degrees.
The First steps:
After everyone signed the charter and we had 150 members in the first 2 weeks it was time to see what we can do with all the toons. We all started running heroics and doing the special events in anticipation of the next expansion (Wrath). When the expansion hit it was a good ‘ol fashioned leveling race to 80 through new content with almost no outside help. Wowhead was incomplete, no web site had any real information on anything even the Horde leveling guide had us running to Alliance quest givers on occasion. 14 days after the launch of Wrath we had enough to form our own 5-mans on a consistent basis with new 80s popping up every day and the true spirit of this guild shining bright. Everyone was there helping everyone else out with advice, materials, professions and anything else we needed. There was a real sense that we were going to do something great.
Growing up:
It wasn’t long we had 5-man dungeon runs every night and anyone that came online would find a group really easily, we were getting all the gear we could in anticipation of our first real challenge: Naxxramas, a zone that would make or break us. A month after the expansion had launched we had enough “geared” 80s to head into Naxx … And wipe the whole night without killing a single boss. We took it in stride after a great motivational speech from our Guild Leader we went back to the drawing board and got more gear from heroics, OS and VoA. By the next raid lock out period we were ready for our next crack at taming the beast. That night we cleared spider wing and one more boss, everyone had gotten some piece of loot and we felt great, so great we spent as much time talking about that raid in vent afterward as we did actually in the instance. We were on fire and the world of Azeroth was our oyster.
The glory “years”:
After that week we started on the road to conquer the rest of that place we had most bosses on Farm in no time. We were attracting more and more people every week and it didn’t take long to build up 2 complete 10-man raid teams. After that 25 Man Naxx was ours for the taking. Our players were gaining experience and everyone was getting more gear every day. We were updating our guild ranking every day in whichever web site was most used at the time and we managed to crack the top 10 server after only 2 weeks of raiding Naxx 25. That spurred the troops onward and KT was ours to pwn.
The beginning of the End:
Just when things were rocking and we were doing good that’s when we started seeing the problems. Like all guilds we had our share of problems, from Key Officers going AWOL for personal matters, to squabbles over spoils and even the occasional public rivalries between the Tanks. We also had people leave the guild for a more “hard core” raiding guild after they got geared up with us and learned all the fights and the ones who left because we “didn’t raid enough” or at the “right times”. There was also a member who got his account hacked and even though Blizzard did eventually restore all it, he’s never really come back. Others just got tired of the game and simply needed a break be it because of real life constraints on their time or simply a genuine need for a break. I don’t know if it was any of these alone that did it but I am certain that the confluence of events led to our eventual collapse. I got to tell you the higher you climb, the longer the fall seems. One particular week we missed a raid because there simply wasn’t any Tank on-line, the next raid night we were short 3 healers. Then we said let’s resume raiding in 10 days or whenever the next patch comes out, but some people have a very short attention span and needed their raid fix then and there. Ultimately when patch day hit the guild just wasn’t the same and we had to start over again.
From the ashes:
Dominate was started from a web site that had one single goal in mind: to help the average player become better. We have, from the beginning, been brought together by an ideal and a common sense of “dominating and having fun doing it”. Because of that Dominate can never really die, those who believe in what we stand for will be there through thick and thin, the hard times and the good. Those who believe that helping people level (through hints and tips and knowledge and possibly a phenomenal leveling guide) is just as important as gearing the new 80s and Raiding Ulduar or any new raid out there ( ToC, Onyxia, Icecrown etc.) This, the true Spirit that holds us together, can weather any storm.
Copy and paste this back to back a couple times with different people and it could very well be the story of any guild on any server.
Starting over … Again:
Gavinn and Lawbringer have both stepped down from the day-to-day leadership of Dominate and some of the more experienced players and some newer ones that have believed in what we stand for since the beginning have stepped up to the plate to rebuild in the Spirit of Dominate. With the help of others we are rebuilding from the ground up the guild was formed over a year ago with one purpose: a Casual Raiding/Training Guild. We have really high hopes and even higher expectations. Whether you are in the middle of leveling your first toon or if you’re at your 5th 80, we have need of every class to rebuild the Dominate guild on Fenris Horde side.
Getting it Right:
If you like helping out other people and don’t mind answering the occasional noob questions or if you’d always wanted to ask some noob question but have always been scared of the backlash in trade chat, then Dominate is for you. If you are sick of the drama and would like to play the game in a friendly, cuss-free atmosphere where respect and a positive attitude are the primary criteria of entry, you’re more then welcome to join us : Horde side on Fenris server(/who Dominate)
As of this writing:
- Dominate GM: Anibow (DK)
- Second in command/Raid Leader: Dindrane (Prot/Holy Paladin … aka Agorg)
These are some of the things that we have learned along the way and have decided to incorporate into the current cycle in order to grow:
- Better communication between the guild leadership, its members and officers.
- Using the Spirit of DominateYourServer.com as the unwritten rule of the guild.
- Actually helping players of all levels (including 1-79) learn to play their class and play as a team.
- Organize runs for lower levels .
- Help the newer 80s get gear as well as experience raiding.
- Getting every 80 their free Bronze drake … I like free.
- Restructuring the guild staff so that all jobs get done by those who enjoy them.
- Restructuring ranks in a visually meaningful manner.
- Getting some PvP in there as well (Premade BGs, daily PvP, Holiday PvP etc)
That’s not to say that we’re perfect but we do try to make a difference wherever we can. We are once again on the look out for like minded people that believe in what we stand for. Wherever you are in the world of Azeroth: always DOMINATE!

the more I keep hearing about this, the more I keep wanting to shell out the 30/60dollars it’ll cost to get my NE on Malorne over to a Troll on Fenris. Or perhaps I’ll just take the cheap route out and do the one on kacleogos (sp)
best wishes guys!
I’d hold off on the Kalecgos server transfer if I were you
The Alliance guild is no more, I guess we should put out a statement about that, but essentially with faction change being possible, along with other changes to the guild structure, we folded up shop and returned to Fenris.
Another option is to create a toon (yet another DK?) on Fenris and come hang out for a while, see if you like the smell of the place (Horde aren’t as pretty and don’t dress as nice as Alliance
). If you like what you see, then Paid Character Transfer is easier to justify … just a thought!
This is probably one of the best articles I have read from you guys in awhile, and thats saying something. I left my last guild after 2 years because of a lack of goal, people started leaving, we stoped raiding, our guild master stepped down, and after that, no one seemed to have an idea of where to go from there and the guild fell apart. Everything you just laid out should be a mandatory read for guild leaders and officers alike. The idea of having a common goal that keeps a guild going, as well as understanding members come and go should stand above all else. I just wish my last guild had read this before it became to late.
World of Weirdcraft.net your source or all things WOW
I have had many instances as Guild Leaders and I agree it is hard to keep members. I’ve had many guilds in Burning Blade on the Alliance side. I owned a guild with 300+ members and an addition 3 with 100+ a piece. I also had a horde guild on Burning Legion with 300+ members too. All these fell even though the numbers made it look impossible at a glance.
I’ve thought about starting fresh over with you guys but I stink at leveling (gets boring for me I guess) and I’ve never been horde so I would be totally lost.. =/ Still thinking about trying to get into you guys’ guild though, sounds like a blast!
Good luck on the rebuild though =)
lol Bossman i was the same played allie since day one was one of the 1st to subscribe to this site got fed up waiting for allie server so came to Dominate
come see for your self have fun Anibow
lvl to 80 is easy why 1 its pve 2 we help or roll a DK we dont mind or pay yur bucs and xfer oh and just to prove its easy iam now a lvl 80 DK i teach all new to horde the way around and iam GM of dominate so it cant be that hard
Wow…
I would have thought the newly appointed GM would have a better command of English. A little punctuation, man.
Seems like a nice enough person though.
Nice article. Interesting to hear about the development of Dominate.
LOL I try, really I do.
You see, Ani’s a fighter not a writer but you should hear him talk!
Maybe we’ll reinstate the podcast so you can hear him instead of trying to decyfer his text
i wish more guilds would learn these things,, then maybe they woouldnt dry up and die .. ive been in two guilds now the it sort of seem that one day everyone was there and the next there wasnt a soul on at all ,,,
this article should place on WoW main page so all guilds could read it and maybe save themselves one day …..
I finally found a guild I like. I wasn’t really friends with anyone when I first joined, just knew them from previous guild or pugs. The guild is pretty new and is slowly but surely coming together with enough people for lvl80 raids without pugging for heals and tank. It is very interesting to watch the people come and leave (for a wide variety of reasons), and see the core members tighten friendships. I hope to be one of the ones that helps it through it’s lifecycle, good, bad, or ugly! And help it dominate of course.
I’m glad the cycles aren’t killing your guild. So many times, I’ve joined a guild, became good friends with everybody, earned a leadership position the hard way, and then watched as it all just fell apart over something stupid no matter what the leadership did about it. In fact, the problem was usually the fault of the leadership or their spouses. I just got tired of it all and now I run my own 1-man guild.
Taint of Proudmoore…..5 years, 3,000 active players, 10 guilds all connected via Guild2Guild, actually Taint2Taint now. We had to write our own addon because G2G does not work well after you hit the 6 guild mark and by guild 10 we were fed up and some of our members decided to write one that could handle our size. And we have many, many, raid groups under our umbrella, from Hardcore to Soft.
Why does it work? Exactly as you said. We have a common goal. We are considered a gay guild by most, but our goal is to have an inviting and non-judgmental place where harassment of any kind is frowned upon. Where prejudice is not acceptable, and where 18+ adults of any creed, color, religion or sexual orientation can play the game we all love in safety, security and mutual respect. And we have one helluva good time. =)
Oh, and cursing is allowed.
I thought I would be the perfect person to respond to this post. I have seen multiple posts about people who are unsure of shelling out the money for a faction change while Dominate is rebuilding. Well I made the jump. I was raiding on a late late night schedule over on the Elune server. Well long story short it just became too much and I have been following Gavin since it was just emails HA HA. I brought my priest over to Fenris with the goal in mind of assisting Dindrane and Anibow in the rebuild of Dominate and to be surrounded by players who approach the game as I do.
Anyways I just wanted to let everyone know that I am here to support the rebuild and other solid alliance players should make the jump. Worst case scenario create a low level and see what Dominate is like for a week or two. And yes I agree getting used to Horde is a adjustment as I played Alliance for close to 3 years. However a small adjustment to make to get what I have been searching for in a guild for sometime now is a small price to pay.

Being a new member of the Dominate family and after talking with Ani I was very happy to read this article. As mentioned by others it is a GREAT read and all guil leaders and members regardless of guild should read it.
I know I for one am very happy I finally bit the bullet and made a toon and joined Dominate on Fenris. I am now slowly moving all my horde toons to this server as based on the last month being in the guild, I know I have found a guild to call Home.
Keep it up!
This is what i’m talking about! Nice article! This gets to the root of things.
Yes, it is true my account was hacked and got everything back. It’s been the real life stuff that has kept me away for awhile. I was there for a good spell until some health issues hit me again, but I will be back, and I will be getting back to the organization of the PvP events. Very well done article, Din.
we know and understand take yur time bro we have yur back on pvp till yur up and about so relax and come back when yur ready all the guild wish you well see you soon Anibow
I know all about the hack thing. It kinda steals your innocence (corny but true) and drive and determination to get on and have fun playing day in and day out like before. I hope to one day be able to do that again. I love WoW and have played it for about 3 years now. Anyway, my guild started quick and has died off. I really liked it too; everyone raided in the morning when I got off work. Now only one guy on every once and awhile. It sucks. Maybe they will rise again like Dominate has. Good luck guys.
I was really surprised when i read this article. I have been a subscriber to your blog for over a year and watched the original call out for your guild and thought to myself, that guild will be successful with the knowledge they have. But, i guess there is always a lesson to be learned at any age or experience level.
My guild also went through it’s cycles but we have yet to hit the “wall” or “decline” as it were. We started as a small guild and stayed that way until LK, at which time for whatever reason we started getting an influx of members. When that happened we knew we had to make changes. We got a lot more structured, set our goals; just as you mentioned, BUT the one thing I think that allowed us to not run into the same thing that Dominate has is defining not only the goals but the GUILD. I know that may seem obvious but there are so whew that actually do it I can understand how a lot of guild have issues. What I mean be defining is, all guild will say we want to progress through content and we are casual and here to have fun. But that sentence does NOT define your guild it’s simply a statement. What we did in “The Council of Legends – Eredar” is dig a little deeper into that sentence and define what “progress”, “casual” and “fun” meant to us. Because those 3 words mean different things to different people.
Fun to some is getting the best gear in the game. Fun to others is getting achievements and others may be having a lot of gold. PvP or PvE, both, how, what, etc…
Casual, that word is just as open as “fun” what does casual actually mean to your guild.
Progress, ok that’s great but how? are you only taking the best of the guild to raids? Are you going to require certain classes to spec a certain way, etc…
Once we really defined the guild then adding new people became actually a nice experience. They knew EXACTLY what they were coming into and we knew we were getting someone that really did have the same views as us. Casual we simply said meant there are no requirements on your play time, how much you raid or even if you sign for raids. Fun was a little harder and you cant really define it, but, basically that you get along with others within the casual atmosphere definition, and that you actually enjoy logging into the game with the people you will be seeing. Progress, we post official guild raids with guidelines for attending each level raid.
We found that these things have helped us tremendously in avoiding drama and turnover, which is almost non-existent for us. OH, and you will never get good guild members by spamming trade “LFM guildies”. All of our members are people who raid with us, like what they see and hear and they inquire from there.
Keep up the Domination guys…
yes your right but we never said we hit the wall we said have tried and tested all the wrong ways to run a guild and now we are doing it the
only way to run a long term Guild and yes it looks like your heading the right way let me say again Dominate is a training Guild that includes
every aspect of the game upto and including how to run a Guild
and we shall post articals about that here in the near future .
I salute you and your guild Anibow GM Dominate Guild
Wow … you just summed up in a few paragraphs exactly what we are doing this time around.
It’s nice to hear of the successes out there, lets the rest of us know that there is hope and gives us new ideas and insight into improving the situation.
Thanks for sharing that
Well i started a hunter that i’m gonna try to roll and see how far I get =P I’ve tried the whole DK thing and i’m just not so good with them, so i’ll take the advice I have gotten from you guys and level my hunter asap. but like I said horde is all new to me
Being on the Horde side is new to alot of us Bossmann.
Speaking as someone who played alliance from the day I started playing WOW almost 3 years ago it is something to get used to but in my opinion well worth it.
Rendragnek – 80 Holy Priest – Dominate Healing Officer
Yeah I guess its true. I’ve had my pally since WoW was the new thing haha, Been on the same server and everything, might as well switch though. Quick question for anyone in Dominate, what is a class that you are low on? Just in case I ever hit 80.
I was around back when Dominate first sprang up on Fenris – in fact, I joined the guild during its second day in existence as an Undead Warlock. Unfortunately, having school and family matters, as stated in the article, my ‘lock fell by the wayside and, eventually, was deleted.
Since then, I’ve found the server I’ve loved to call home — Moon Guard.
Yes, a RP server. Though many would criticize it for being PvE, RP just adds more flavor to the game, in my opinion (even if you occasionally must ignore the vampire-catgirls)
Which is why, I suggest to DYS – Dominate, RP style. Stay true to the spirit of Dominate, only add that extra touch of RP shine. I’d love to see it from you guys, as I do enjoy the tips here.
Blood, Thunder, and Happy Hunting,
Gruutal of Moon Guard
Bossman,
Speaking on behalf of the officers….I believe the spirit of Dominate is for yo u to play the toon you want to play. Obviously we appreciate the fact you are trying to provide us with some class balance. Long story short this guild is for you and we want you to play whatever makes you happy.
Rendragnek – Dominate Healing Officer
On the strength of this article I’m shifting my little dog and pony show to Fenris – even though I live on the other side of the world in a totally different time zone – the populations on Oceanic servers just aren’t as good for guilding as this sounds like it will be. See you in domination
Yemaydespair (Litmus)
its what i did
