Since we’ve had so little overall information about the Shaman class, we thought it would make a perfect beginning for our DPS profiling series. Even if you don’t have a Shaman, you’ll probably end up being surprised at a couple of the points you’ll find here, and it will make you foam at the mouth to get the post for your class and favorite build.
The elemental Shaman has been a little low on the DPS charts for a while, and is showing no signs of making a serious run at rogues and mages anytime soon. However, that doesn’t mean you won’t want one in the raid. An ele shammy will buff the locks and mages another 500 dps or so from totems, so they get part of their DPS from the buffs they give to other classes. The more casters you have, the more you need an Elemental Shaman in the raid.
It turns out that the real key to best DPS in T8 gear for the Elemental Shaman is to skip the T8 legs and one spell completely. It will make a huge difference in your DPS overall, although this will certainly apply to single target pulls such as Boss fights and not trash quite so much. So let’s take a look at the build and show you how to begin using these guides.
First, take a look at the build profile from Wowhead:
http://profiler.wowhead.com/?profile=13000116
When the page loads, you’ll see the doll slots all filled up with best in slot gear, so you can know what you’re looking for from all those dungeon runs. We will post the T9 current version next, but for those of you without a bagillion Emblems of Triumph and no Trophies the T8 version of BiS is a great place to start. At the bottom you will also see all the enchants and gems you will want to use (or epic versions of course where available).
In the tab at the top you will see the talent tab where you can check out the full build along with glyphs choices, although the glyphs are also listed here:
Glyphs:
- flame shock
- lava
- lightning bolt
The next thing you need to do is know what to use and when. Don’t think of things in terms of rotions any more, but rather in terms of priorities. In the following list, use things in the order of the list from top to bottom, refreshing as things higher up in the priority list become available.
Priorities:
- flask type = frost wyrm
- food type = fish feast
- flametongue weapon
- water shield
- mana spring totem
- wrath of air totem
- speed potion
- flame shock
- lava burst (only if flame shock is active on the target)
- searing totem
- lightning bolt
- thunderstorm
Now, of course you’re going to drop all of your totems at once, but you will need to refresh searing totem every minute. The other thing you will notice is that you will not be using chain lightening at all in this spec. Rather, you will just cycle through and hot flame shock every time the cool-down is up and fill in the spaces with LB, and oddly enough, Thunderstorm. Thunderstorm will require you to be almost in melee range, and as you can see in the charts below it actually barely registers when it comes to damage. In other words, TS will only come into play in a few fights but can fill up a cool-down in the rotation from time to time. You can see the damage graphs from the Simulationcraft Wiki for all of this below.
And, finally, you can always make gear choices a whole lot easier with Pawn. You can download pawn from either WowMatrix or Curse and keep it updated easily enough. Pawn will give every piece of potential gear a score while you work toward best in slot so that you can keep the same build and priority list while you collect gear that matches the best in slot stats closely enough. This will keep you from having to tweak and test your rotation and gear choices and get used to what you are doing.
Pawn Scale:
( Pawn: v1: “Shaman T8 57-14-00″: HitRating=3.02, SpellDamage=1.59, HasteRating=1.39, CritRating=1.13, Intellect=0.38, RedSocket=36.85, YellowSocket=48.32, BlueSocket=24.16 )
So there you have the Max DPS build for the Elemental shaman in T8 equivalent best in slot gear. Next time we’ll bring the Shaman up to T9 level and then move on to the other classes one at a time. As always, you can leave your requests for which class we do next in this thread and we’ll post the most requested in order to help you Dominate.

Well I have been asking for something about Shamn and you delivered but I guess I should have been more specific lol. I wanted an article on enhancement or better yet healing as a Shaman.
This is a great article lots of good info here. I just decided to take the lower DPS build and went enhancement/resto with mine. I am still learning it and can push out over 3K DPS in heroic dungeons I still raid mainly with my hunter and have only have my Shammy in 2 raids. He seems to do ok though.
I’ve been waiting for a good article on the ele shammy for a while now, glad to see you guys delivered. Just one question. I noticed that the gems you have selected for the profile do not activate the meta gem. What do you recommend getting to fulfill that requirement? Otherwise there is no point in even installing a meta gem if you aren’t going to activate it.
And secondly after taking a closer look at the build why have you left out the totem of wrath? and taken eye of the storm? That is a pvp talent, you shouldn’t be getting hit very much in a raid if you are watching your threat properly. Wouldn’t those talents from EoS be better spent in Reverberation so you would be able to apply your flame shock more often or work another shock into the rotation?
I love to play EoS and the other BGs just so i can push my attackers off the cliffs. I try to take the time to wave. ( the 8% mana helps a lot also)
If you are assuming the shaman has at least 2 piece t8 why use glyph of flame shock?
And darkwolfneo, there are plenty of encounters where there is raid damage and the pushback reduction is useful.
Was just wondering if the flame shock glyph and the 2 piece bonus from the t-8 gear stack for more FS crits since they both do the same thing?
I believe there are quite a few mistakes here. You mention how we buff other classes 500DPS, but without totem of wrath, we don’t buff them any. Dropping Searing Totem instead of Totem of Wrath means you are DPS hungry and not thinking of the raids overall benefit. I’d be booted if I tried to do this, unless there was another Ele shaman dropping ToW…
Survival Hunter please!
Ret Pally Build please…..
Just commenting on Darkwolfneo, if you notice they still have one un-spent talent point. So I assume this talent goes to totem of wrath. But I think the calculator might be glitched because it is saying you require level 80, when the same spec on the armory only says 79.
I do agree that the 3 points in EoS could be put to better use in reverberation.
That was a great article. My shammy is going to be my next 80 and I was wondering about exactly what you just talked about.
For your next class I really would love a comparison on mage specs… I have a well enough geared mage and have a dual arcane/fire spec but while others seem to blast out the DPS in raids in a fire spec with comparable gear my DPS goes down when I switch from Arc to fire. I really blast out DPS in arc and stay in the same level range as the fire mages in raids but can`t seem to do the same when I play as fire.
I find there are a few things wrong here. You mention we provide a DPS boost of 500 to other classes, we do this by dropping Totem of Wrath, yet you don’t have it in the spec and you mention dropping Searing Totem, well they get 0 DPS boost if we don’t drop Totem of Wrath. Searing will increase our DPS, but that is poor play in a raid, boosting our DPS by a few hundred but decreasing other casters by 500 each… ToW is a MUST HAVE talent. Also, you do not Flame Shock every time it’s up, you refresh it when its dot is about to expire. Rotation is FS LvB then LB til LvB is ready then LB again til the rotation is ready to use. You shouldn’t need to cast hunderstorm unless you put Chain Lightning into the rotation as our mana is not an issue following the cast rotation.
Read my comment above, his talent tree was broken
A couple of questions, but first I’d like to qualify where I’m coming from. I have 2 lvl 80 raiding locks, so I know what I’m on about in general, but my elesham is only lvl 62, so I’m a bit of a newb to that.
First, why did you use blue quality gems instead of purple in your “max dps” build? Second, with socket bonuses, on a number of occassions the spell power gems could be replaced by sp/mp5 with a loss of about 6 SP each time (epic gems) gaining 5 mp5: wouldn’t this be a worthwhile swap? Surely the more mp5 you have the longer you will last in a fight and the more damage you would do? Third, is lightweave embroidery really worth more than the 23 haste and 46 spell power that you could get from either inscription or enchanting?
On a personal note I would probably take a point out of EotS and take ToW and grab Glyph of ToW instead of the redundant Flame Shock glyph (this gives another 84 SP). Of course, with another elesham or a decently geared demolock (which are very rare) I would drop the searing totem as you recommend, but I find it unlikely that the searing totem would be worth more than 280 SP & 3% crit just for myself, let alone the rest of the raid.
Oh, and lastly, shouldn’t he be an orc or troll for the racial? I can well imagine a tauren enhance shammy, but otherwise orc/troll.
By the way, I noticed that your weapon had spirit on it, which is pretty much useless for eleshams as far as I can see so I looked at an alternate pre-ToC 10/25 option. As it turns out, the Honed Fang of the Mystics from Ony 25 and the Frozen Loop ring from 25 Uld makes for a slightly better combination than Starshard Edge and Signet of Manifested Pain. If you socket the starshard with +23 SP then the Fang/frozen loop combination has 3 stam, 11 SP, 7 hit (redundant though) & 29 mp5 more. If you socket for SP/mp5 then it’s only +24 mp5 but 17 SP more.
There might be a better combination out there, with some other non-hit item swapped out for a +hit item. I only checked the ring out because I knew Signet of Manifested Pain was an old ring.
great article. was wondering if you are going to do this for every class.. i only wonder as im playing a warlock and just wondering about rotations. think ive gotten mine down.. im 4/5 t8.. and always near the top (wud be top if not for dam cats and mages.. lol) so if poss.. could u do locs next.. pleease
Blood DK next please. Great article here.
I agree with mordsythe but more specifically and article on
Affliction
warlocks! You see destro everywhere anymore but if I wanted to play that way I would’ve rolled a mage hahaha
well it doesnt matter if its an error in the spec not having totem of wrath
He clearly states using searing totem on every cooldown
and then totem of wrath doesnt help talent or not
