Patch 3.2: Quick Gearing Guide for the want-to-be raider

(We’ve had some reports that this article didn’t come up properly so I had to update it)
“So i made it to 80 now what do i do?? I am lost: HELP!!”
We hear it or read it in chat every day and once again it came up in the replies to Law’s wonderful article on Lore. Now I must admit: if it wasn’t for my fellow guildies at DOMINATE I would still be totally lost apart from all the new reputations to work for and daily quest for professions and the factions, you have all the other dailies for rep and the heroic dailies and all the new instances. And you can’t even get a group to do any of them.
You see in trade: “LFM HTOC” or “LF2M Heals+ DPS for H CoS (Daily)” or what ever and you whisper said person only to receive a whisper back 4 to 5 mins later: “Sorry, full” and you sit there thinking how do these others get their whisper in 1st? Don’t I type quick enough? Then you find out it is down to your gear score “Sorry your gear score is too low” and you don’t want to ask because you already feel as useful as a chocolate tea pot.
Whether you’re new to the game or it’s your 17th 80 these steps are a must for anyone that even remotely wants to raid. Since patch 3.2 gear has become more and more easily available so we thought we’d publish a quick reference guide to Raid gearing. None of these steps require you to enter a single 10-man raid.
There are 5 things you should focus on:
Reputation with the right Faction for your Head Enchant:
This is one of those things that nobody can do for you, yet will be using for every single spec and every single head slot piece of gear you will ever wear. Depending on what you choose to do, you will need to raise your reputation for a different Faction: You need only hit Revered for the best Enchant. Go pick up the tabard of the appropriate faction and wear it in every heroic you do.
Kirin’Tor: Caster DPS
Argent Crusade: Tank
Knights of the Ebon Blade: Melee DPS
Wyrmrest Accord: Healing
Reputation with Sons of Hodir for your Shoulder Enchant:
Again this is another one of those things that nobody can do for you but are worth it since they will be applicable to every piece of gear you ever equip on that character regardless of talent choices.
It used to be that you had to complete the entire quest chain and do the dailies for a whole month to get to Exalted, then Blizzard saw fit to simplify the process and allow you to trade in the (Back then BoP) Relics of Ulduar for some Rep with Sons of Hodir. Next they made the relics BoE so you now could theoreticaly buy your way to exalted .
Recelty Blizzard has introduced yet another way to get faction rep with the only faction in the game that gives lvl 80 Shoulder enchant: Comendation Badge: Sons of Hodir. They can be obtained from doing the REGULAR Daily. This is fantastic since you can complete the quest while doing it on Heroic as well and pick up the Emblems of Conquest that every boss will be happy to drop for you.
(Note: Scribes (Character that level the Inscription trade skill) can do a much upgraded, self-only version to shoulder enchant but that’s another matter all together)
Crusader’s Coluseum: Trial of the Champion: Reg + Heroic
This new instance (since 3.2) is your easiest stop for level 200-219 gear. Regular ToC will drop level 200 gear from every boss. You can clear it on Regular, step out, reset the instance and do it all over again. In fact you should do your best to run through that place as many times as you possibly can and pick up all the drops that you can. If you run it often enough it’s also a great place to gear up your second spec.
Running the Heroic give you Ulduar-level gear from every boss, including weapons and shoulders. By far the easiest place to pick up 219 starter gear.
Doing the Daily Heroic for the Emblems of Triumph:
Every time you turn in the Heroic Daily quest you will be rewarded with gold as well as 2 Emblems of Triumph. These are your all access pass to Tier 9 and level 245 gear. They can be obtained at a rate of 2/day this way. Emblems of Conquest are the fringe benefit that doubles your payout for these runs along with the actual gear that may or may not drop for you. You can also obtain them from the fire bosses in VoA and Onyxia.
Running Heroics for the Emblems of Conquest:
At this point there is nothing stopping you from doing more Heroics and picking up Emblems of Conquest. Emblems of Conquest: Pick up ~250 of them to obtain 2-piece T-8 (Head and Chest), Neck, Waist, Hands, Pants and Ranged. All of the Conquest gear is level 226 and will contribute greatly to your cause (Gearing up)
Knowing where you stand:
With that being said, you should also have tools to tell you where you stand and what you still need to work on. For both of the web sites below: enter your time zone, your realm(server) and your character’s name and look yourself up.
www.WoW-Heroes.com for a very good overall picture of your current situation gear-wise (My personal favorite).
www.WoWHead.com/?Profiles For the same thing (slightly different) from WoWHead.
Do those 5 things and it really won’t talk long to get a 2250 gear score and more. Gear score is what quite a few people will judge you by when you ask to get into a raid. It is not a complete picture however since it doesn’t account for experience or knowledge of the game but it is here for you and you should take full advantage of resources at your disposal.
There are far too many items in each category to list them all: That’s what WoWHead.com is there for you. Hopefully this will give you a sense of direction to get geared up.
Now get out there and DOMINATE.

Thank you guys! This should make the gearing process easier for some people.
on a side note, I couldn’t access this article for hours.
Yes, Lawbringer “unpublished” this article to give priority to the Brewfest one since it was time-sensitive.
Glad you like it, Sorry for the inconvenience
THANK YOU! Now this is exactly the kind of thing that I come to DYS to learn. True, I hardly have the best gear, but what I have is decent enough that I can go where I know I will get gear that will do me good.
The comment about the Hodir is true enough; I actually got to Exalted in just a few days with them, simply because I had a few hundred gold laying around that I could splurge on Relics of Ulduar. Now, the only reason I go to Dun Niffelheim is for farming local herbs (and occasionally getting a new shoulder enchant, when I get new gear).
You might also want to add the Argent Crusade as a good source of gear; once you attain your first Championship, there are a number of items that can be bought with Champion’s Seals from the various city vendors. (Mind you, in most cases, they are the same items.) Plus, for leveling, it is just as easy to grab the Heirlooms from the Tourney quartermaster as it is from the vendors in Wintergrasp or Dalaran.
Shhhh … don’t tell anyone but I heard a rumor that there just might be a Argent Tournament Guide coming out …
I heartily agree that ToC is the best and fastest way to gear up a new lvl 80. I had dinged 80 on my prot/ret pally just after ToC had come out and it was great. I didn’t have good enough gear to tank heroics so I ran ToC for a few days as dps and updated at least half my gear for both prot and ret. Just 2 days ago I finally got my slacking priest to 80 and after gathering up some decent epic/rare boe gear I’m farming ToC yet again for her healing gear.
Whether you run regular or heroic, this one instance is like putting all the Northrend heroics together as far as epic gear is concerned. No more running this and that heroic for months just to get good enough gear to be able to progress into raiding.
LOL the whole premise of the article was that you couldn’t get Heroic groups, and your solution – do heroics!!!! Waste of time imo – but hey – you never publish what I say anyway.
LOL … There seems to have been a little miss-communication … didn’t mean to mislead you but the article is about RAID gearing … and it’s not really possible to do that without going through Heroics …
You are right I should have used examples like:
“LF2M Heals + DPS for 10-ToC, PST for Gear check”
I’m sorry for the confusion
I don’t see anything but the comments… I have 2 about to ding 80 too…
the only problem with this “wasy mode” gearing up is that there are so many people that dont know how to play their toons properly. since 3.2 ive had more dreadfull tanks and heals than i dare to think about.. DPS with 200-226 gear yelling that they have uber gear and do uber DPS and then get in an instance and WOW… 2500 DPS.. and im sitting at 5K DPS.
i know the reasons for the easy gear up but it still doesnt allocate for people not learning their toons properly.. so yes.. gearing up is necessary. but PLEASE.. for the love of god.. LEARN to play the toon before going in to groups and making it a total wipe-fest.

ok so ive been up all night lol DOMINATE … there thats better
I am a dps arms warrior (currently) and I can only put out at best 2.2k dps……my gear is very good, epic gems and awesome enchants…..but can’t seem to get any better…….I do the rotations like wowhead says….for arms…….keep up rend, execute on sudden death regardless of rage, overpower when up, keep BS on cooldown, keep ms on cooldown, slam to burn excess rage, and then slam & heroic strike when full rage…..but still can’t get over 2.2k……..my name is slink, I am in alextrasza……80 night elf warr…….thinking about going back to fury…..cuz I have Claymore of ancient power and Titansteel destroyer……but really wanna replace those…….good grief this dps thing is driving me nuts!!!!
Very good guide, very recently had a guildie reroll and several others get their alts to 80 and ToC has meant that they’ve gone from greens to 4k+ DPS epic levels in under a week, its truely amazing how welfare it is now
I really enjoyed this article! I’m a casual player, but love checking DYS for good tips and useful websites. Thanks for useful the article Agorg!
I need to know why my dps is crap…..I was a fury warrior and did all that you said and only sometimes would my dps get up to 2.5k, mostly it was around 1.5…..I get booted from raids cuz of it sometimes. I just don’t understand the fluctuation. When I am fighting raid bosses it sometimes gets over 2k……I had titans grip with titansteel destroyer and claymore of ancient power……..my name is slinky and realm is alextrasza. I now switched to arms and have just the claymore……could you look at my gear and give let me know if I am doing something wrong>?
I ma by no means an expert but perhaps I can point you in the right direction.
a) This may sound like a silly question, but did you train up your Fury spec abiolities after you re-specced ?
b)Having looked at your gear there really isn’t any reason why you couldn’t put out 3.5-5K DPS on a consistant basis, your gear is good, your gems are epic, and you’ve got some of the best enchants. The only thing I can think about is your abilities (Rotation). Either you’re not using an ability all-together or you are missmanaging your rage.
If a) is not it, consider readingthe forums over at http://www.ElitistJerks.com to solve b)
I hope this helps a bit … Perhaps one of our readers may have more insight into Warriors

Thanks for all the help hints and tips you guys are give its a great help. However one thing that still puzzles me is the constant request before i can get in a group what is your DPS. This is prob a noob question but i have recount so how do i work out my DPS. Thanks
download recount
Before responding to a post, you could read it. He says he has recount.
Well you should run instances 10/25 man with raid buffs and look at several fights. If you’re reliably over 3k tell them 3k+ or whatever if they insist on a number. Some folks might say go do Naxx25 and see what you do on Patch then tell people that, although that’s probably around the max considering there is zero movement. People post those numbers, and I don’t know what meaning they have either.
Raid leaders that know what they’re doing are looking at total damage, which is what’s important for killing the boss. If some dork does 10k AoE damage for 10 sec then dies because he was standing in fire, he looks like a hero if you post the DPS. Personally, I’d rather take the dude in quest greens and blues smart enough to move when flames appear at his feet. At least then I know when he wins a roll a good player is getting the gear. (Yes, I have actually seen players at the bottom of the damage list post the DPS to raid chat then brag when they died 30 seconds into the fight because they were standing in fire. I’m trying really hard to resist posting names.
) The real heroes were the guys who stayed alive because they were situationally aware and did 4k for the entire fight.
Unfortunately, you don’t have a meter to tell you how good the player is before the raid starts. People resort to numbers like ill-defined “DPS”, usually provided by the player I might add, to figure out who to take.
How very true.
Here are a few more tricks you can try:
a) self-buff and get your stats on a dummy it will be lower then raid buffed but you get to work on a perfect rotation.
b) when posting or reading recount look at total damage done as well as damage over time(DPS), you may be quite surprised at who tops that list.
c) when looking someone up, (on wow-heroes for example) look at how they gam their gear and what enchant they put, if you’ve played this game for any length of time, this should yell you if a player knows what they’re doing regardless of gear level.
d) you can also look at their achievements or the number of emblems collected (although that doesn’t account for the new alt toon of an experienced player that just hit 80, it can help get a better picture
I should do a whole article on this LOL
As we recently reported, Skada is better than recount so . . .
