More Banking Toons Make It Easier To Make Gold

We never stop innovating at DYS. There is never one perfect way of doing things; instead, you must continually refine your processes to get more and more efficient at everything you do. This applies not only in the game, but real life as well. The moment you think you’ve arrived, you’re sure to just get passed.
Our latest tip is one way we’ve discovered that makes pro auction house Domination much easier. Smart players, and especially those of you who read DYS, have always used dedicated banking toons and mules to help them smooth out the process of running hundreds of auctions, now you can put those mules to even better use.
Not too long ago we proposed using Death Knights for trade skills. During our push to complete the Alliance leveling guide (yes folks it’s coming) we decided to fire up our complete system for Domination on a new server (we’re not saying where quite yet).
The first step in any good AH system is the banker. The toon that does nothing but stand at the mailbox and scan the AH for deals. Since this is Alliance, the only place to be is Exodar. So we fired up a DK and in less than two hours we were ready to roll. Plus, we had 23g pocket change to boot on a brand new server.
The second must-have for anyone serious about making gold is an enchanter. With the DK already at 58, it’s a no-brainer to spend another few hours hitting level 65 so we can train all the way up to Grand Master enchanting if we want (and we do). So now we’ve got a little bankroll and a toon capable of learning DE all the way to the top. Since enchanting is a process all on it’s own, the DK was parked at the mailbox in Exodar while we took the next step.
That next step was a main banker and a mule. So a couple of Dranei toons were also created and run down to the Exodar. The DK mailed his gold to the main banker and we started our daily scans for a week. At the end of the week we had everything in place to completely crush a new auction house.
The main banking toon begins to buy for resale and it doesn’t take long to get some serious dough. Since we were buying things for DE anyway, it leaves you with plenty of stuff to DE for the DK to level enchanting. The main banker send all the DE items to the chanting toon, keeps all the mats for rolling auctions, and send items for resale to the third guy.
A couple of definitions are in order for those of you who haven’t yet treated yourself to our Auction House Mastery Guide.
- Mats – anything consumable. This Category includes regular mats like cloth and leather, but also food, potions, scrolls, and anything else that is one-time use.
- Items – anything that goes in an equipment slot on your toon. These items are weapons, armor, jewelry, off hand, ranged, and trinkets.
- Rolling auctions – normally mats that are re-posted to the AH every time they expire. You don’t put green items on rolling auctions, only mats, blues and epic items.
So all the items went to the item banker, the DE items go to the enchanter, and the main banker keeps all the mats. And that’s where we started doing something a little differently than we ever have before.
Up until this point the items would stay with the item mule until Thursday, when the mule would just hit “return” to send all those things back to the main banker for posting. And the enchanter would DE everything and send the mats back to the main banker. Not any more.
Now, we’re just leaving the items on the item dude until Thursday and then he runs to the AH himself and posts the items. The Enchanter also is posting his own auctions of enchanting mats, while the main banker does all of the rolling auctions. Now everything we sell is separated into neat little categories on three different toons. We don’t even log into the item banker more than three times a week, or the enchanter more than a few times weekly.
Now, instead of mailing things back and forth all the time, we just send everything to the proper banking toon created specifically to deal with that kind of mat or item. That banking toon posts his own auctions and this gives us a very clear record of how we’re doing on each of the three types of major auction house categories: Regular Mats, Chanting Mats, and Items. All we have to do is look at our statistics pane for each character and we can see precisely how we have done over time on all three sets.
Plus, it’s taking less time than ever to manage the whole system. Unloading and sorting items from the mail takes a lot more time on one toon than if you split it up once to three separate toons and never have to worry about sorting it again.
To keep an accurate total of how much gold you have you just mail extra gold from the chanting and item toons back to your main banker from time to time and it’s all in one place. Since all the toons are on the same account, they can all use the same AADV data and settings.
(We also have a price capping toon on another account where we send all the items for price capping. This ensures that the settings for those items stays put without interfering with our regular auction prices on the other account. For more information about price capping read this article: Advanced Gold Making For Pros At The Auction House).
The Death Knight has also learned Tailoring to make bags and a few other items. We find that while having a tailor is nice, the toon buffs aren’t a big enough benefit for an end-game character to be worth skipping something like Jewelcrafting or Blacksmithing – which have far greater benefits to a raiding toon. The same thing can be said for Leatherworking. And since we do have more than one account to work with, that price capping DK toon will get Alchemy and Leatherworking. Our main toons will get the professions with the big buffs.
It sounds slightly more complex at first, but once you do this for a week or two you’ll wonder how you ever did it any other way. So roll yourself another toon or two and then really go Dominate the auction house on your server.

I’d love to try this on a “brand new server”, but how do you find one? Are they announced somewhere? If so, I haven’t spotted it yet
Keep up the good work

Not really a “brand new” server, just new for us. Fairly new server, less than a year old and fairly low pop. What you’re looking for is low pop servers created in the last year. I’m not sure when the last batch of “New” server came out, but I’m sure someone will give you a link in this thread. Also, be sure to create toons on all your possible servers to peek in on the AH. We compared 6 different low pop servers on several criteria before choosing our final destination. You can narrow your list appreciably with a few filters before you even start searching.
1. PvE vs PvP – this eliminates more than half right off the bat
2. Population density – High, Medium, Low, Recommended – this will get your list down to around 40
3. Age – young servers generally have booming economies as people level toons and trade skills
4. Time Zone – if you’re going to be raiding this can be a consideration
5. Server location – you might not know this but servers are hosted in Texas, Washington, and a number of other places. Choosing a server closer to you might make an ever-so-slight difference in performance.
6. Battlegroup
7. Market Conditions – any pro at working an AH can tell in just a few minutes whether they can pwn or not. We took one look at the wool market and knew we were gonna hurt some people when we showed up. Abyss crystal competition is another good one to peek in on.
Try looking at things with medium but consistent demand curves. If it’s obvious there’s more demand than supply in several categories it’s good conditions. If it’s obvious that the market is flooded with mats it’s probably not the best place to be. Some servers have lots of farmers which makes arbitration more difficult, but on servers with lower farming pops arbitration is the big winner. Get that folks, if there are fewer farmers you don’t go farm, you do it our way.
A good article showing how to get started on a new server. However, there is one small correction that I feel needs to be made.
In your description of the DK as enchanter, you write that it is a “no-brainer” to level the DK up to lvl 65, so as to make it a Grand Master Enchanter. However, if you’re talking simply about gold and not enchanting, evern that isn’t needed.
See, the highest items in the game (let’s use the epic dagger Bladetwister as an example) only requires 375 skill to disenchant it. 375 can be acheived simply with Master Enchanting, which only requires lvl 55. That’s right… before you even step foot in Outlands, you can already disenchant the most powerful items in the game.
Now, if you actually want to be able to use the highest enchants yourself, of course you need to get Grand Master, which means getting to lvl 65. However, if all you want to be able to do is DE items so that you can AH the mats, then you don’t NEED to go that far.

Agree with Griezz.
My DK enchanter is at level 60, and if I ever want to do the high end encahnts I will need to level him. BUT if his sole roll is to DE and list for profit (which it is), then his level is fine.
That said, I like your devolution approach. I have just started to do the same, and it is a LOT easier to follow what’s happening this way. Grats on another really good article!
This is true, of course. You only need to hit 375 to do merely DE work. However, since Enchanting has no dailies and you can buy all the high end recipes with shards (which you should have in plenty doing all the DE), it’s not a bad idea to work up to 65 so you can enchant your own toons with anything you should need. Except that pesky mongoose enchant, but that’s not all that hard to find.
Hey Law, I had 1 question about the rotation.
the item guy logs ever expiration of auctions, so you only need to log him ever few days. But if your feeding him new items, is it not best to put them up right away? I know its time consuming to post 200+ auctions at a time, so I tend to do it in batches, so when 1 set expires, I am not overloaded (assuming they didnt all sell – and with items, it can sometimes take a few lists).
and second, does the DE DK post the matts he get’s from the matts or does he roll them back to the main. The reason I ask this is, if he indeed sends them back and doesnt post anything himself, then why wouldnt you just have him as a main banker and have a 2nd banker as the item handler.
Just looking for clarification. Thanks guys. helpful as always.
Items only go up 4 times before they are DE’d. That means twice only two weeks running. So, no you don’t roll items. And the DE guy rolls his own auctions. Of course – I do this just to keep the different item types separate – it’s not necessary. My main banker does other things for professions. But either way will work.
Sorry, Law. What I ment was… if you Post auctions every 3 days, but you Buy items Every day and send them to your Item guy, they sit in the in box for 2 days (one for the next day).
But thanks for the clarification with the DE DK. I am going to try this layout tonight.
Err – that was 2 questions.
I started doing this with 3 AH toons & it was working great.
The only problem was still with the item toon, I continue to re-post epic/purples and superior/blues. I was still dreading going through all of the equip-able items – sorting out the greens that were over 14 days & sending them to my dis-enchanter
I got to thinking about the original ideas of the post – making all of these things I put on the AH much easier to do, so I took it one step farther. I have added a second equip-able items AH toon and he is only used for the uncommon/greens He posts auctions on Thursday, Saturday and on Monday I sort through all of the greens much faster. I don’t have to check each one for green, blue or purple. I just look at the number of days since it was purchased and I’m done sorting those very quickly.
