Rare Pets – The Green Wing Macaw
Posted on July 8th, 2009 by Lawbringer under Alliance, Auction House, Efficiency Tips, General Tips, Gold Building, Gold Farming, Horde, Instances, PVE, Paladin, Power Leveling, Powerleveling, World of Warcraft, WotLKFrom time to time we run across a neat little gold making tip that gets better as the game moves on. Some tips fall into the ditch along the way while others get better. This is one of those.
Since the advent of WotLK and achievements the market for rare pets has boomed. We’ve seen this particular pet going for as much as 4,000 gold on some servers – which is ridiculous, but we don’t judge we just make profits.
There’s really not much to this except for the fact that this might be one thing worth farming for. As you know we loathe farming for anything unless we can make at least 400-500g an hour. But in this case you might make an exception depending on the prices for your server.
The Green Wing Macaw is not really that hard to get your hands on, but nobody seems to know that. Teldrassil Sproutling, and some of the dragonlings are much harder to get, but that’s hardly common knowledge.
And that’s the power of this little bird. It holds a price point in the vicinity of the other drop pets, but isn’t that hard to get – especially with a level 80. Enough with the buildup, here’s the secret.
Take your Level 80 toon down to Deadmines in Westfall and crush the joint a few times. You should be able to clear the whole thing in about 15 minutes (especially a Paladin or Mage). We were recently doing a little powerleveling and got 3 of these babies in just 5 runs. The other runs netted us one of the other pets in the Macaw family.
The green winged birds sold almost instantly for over 250g, and since we got 3 of them in less than an hour that’s a touch over 750g an hour. That fits me just fine.
You certainly don’t want to go flood the market with anything, and pets are no exception. You wouldn’t really want to put 5 of these up at a time, just one please. So our advice is to take an hour or so once a week when you’re really bored and go wax VC until you nab one or two of these.
Again, this may not be the case on all servers, but for some of you this might just get you an epic flyer while you learn how to really work the AH (and you should). But from our point of view there are some things you can farm that just almost Dominate.

Was this done on the horde side of Fenris or Ally? I’m on Fenris but ally side.
Hmm, must be different economics on your server. Green Wing Macaws are going for 40G on the Alliance AH. Khaz Modan.
looks like its not much of a secret on my server. 10 on the AH between 30-50g each.
Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s much of a secret on my server either since the prices are under 100g as far as I’ve seen. I ran VC a few times a bit ago for a lowbie friend and the few birds I got didn’t sell very well it seemed. Guess it just all depends on the server.
I’ve actually been farming the black tabby for the last few weeks and while the droprate kinda sucks, plus having to camp a rare that’s only hostile to Horde, it’s actually not that bad. They’re worth around 1-2k gold depending on which faction you sell to and it only takes me a few minutes a day and a little luck. I had no Horde toons so I made a quick Belf DK and camped her at the spot and now everyday before I play my Alli toons I hop on her for 30 seconds to see if the rare is up and then log. I’ve nabbed the rare about 16 times just doing this the last few weeks which got me 3 black tabbies even though I know there are a few other consistent campers there with me. So that’s a few thousand gold at least for maybe a couple hours work if you factor in the time it took me to get the toon leveled out of the starting area in the first place. I believe I have at least 90 vanity pets now, including the black tabby and still have a handful of other rare ones to work on. So for all you other vanity-pet lovers out there, here’s just another more obscure one to look for.
Where would this spot be? I would like to try.
On ally side of fenris right now they are under 20 gold. Maybe i’ll try the neutral Ah.
Macaw doesn’t sell well on dethecus either. on a good day, the white kitten will sell around 300g on horde side, black tabby seems set at 1395g ally side. but here’s a tip for collectors. save your seals from tourny dailies, and if you can go cross faction, offer to trade any ally tourny pet for any horde tourny pet, or vice versa depending what you play. when you get a bite, go buy the pet the buyer wants, send it through the neutral AH, to yourself if you’re soloing- to your friend if you have no access to the opposing faction. then trade to the buyer. i’m at 95 pets so far and making nice tips providing this service to same faction friends. you can see my collection here or track your own.

Make sure to whack Cookie too while your there. He often drops a kitten.
No profit on Khaz’Goroth either. Top selling price was 69 g, and AAD showed that as 87% of max price. Glad I checked before I ground, lol.
Profit normally higher on the Horde side. Also a lot of Wool Cloth drops on a full run, so that will add to your G per hour rate.
I got one of these a few months back and trained him to be a pet of mine.
If I’d only known….
Funny that you guys would talk about this a few weeks after a friend power levels my hunter through Deadmines. I’m so glad I ninja’ed it. IT sells for around 700-900 gold on Ravenholdt Horde side. Atleast, it did last time I checked.
