WotLK Druid Cat Form Spec DPS Best PvE Build 3.1

Since podcast episode 12 we’ve been trying to get to this topic. It took a little more research than we thought but better late than never. So we’re going to give you a couple of absolutely awesome tools to use that will really boost your cat form DPS – even if you’ve never spent a single second in a feral form.
I actually decided to give cat deeps a whirl after healing for 6 months straight. I heard of a fellow who used to be in the guild doing something weird like 5.5k DPS in somewhat regular-ish gear just by using a certain mod. Well, since we had done so many runs in Naxx I had a fairly complete set of cat gear just sitting around collecting dust and the thought of doing a little melee sounded like fun.
So off I went to download Facemaul. It puts a nifty little box on your screen that shows you the next two moves in advance and a larger icon for the button you should hit right now. Now, if you’ve ever read theory-crafting for feral druids, such as the mega-thread from EJ you know that it can be thoroughly mind-boggling to try to come up with a way of balancing all the priorities in the potential rotation. And that’s saying nothing of differences of opinion about what the rotation SHOULD be.
But Facemaul does it by the numbers. It calculates you potential DPS on the fly based on some complex algorithm. It will have you doing things in orders you never would have thought of, like saving Faerie Fire for after two or three moves sometimes. You simply cannot get a better rotation manually. Facemaul is a must have.
The next thing I found has to be hands-down one of the best WoW tools I’ve ever seen. Toskk’s DPS Gear Methodology page is a blend of number-crunching geek heaven, uber nerd theory-crafting and on the page spread-sheeting on steroids.
All you do is plug in a little information about your druid and it does hundreds of complex calculations instantly. What it does is tell you exactly what kind of DPS you can expect, it suggests your build and even builds a pawn formula for your druid based on your current gear set. It does this because based on your crit rate and blah blah blah you might actually be better off using a bit of gear with more strength OR a bit with more agility – without these calculations it’s almost impossible to know.
Which brings us to Pawn – one of my all-time favorites. Pawn will give you a score for every single piece of gear you ever see based on a formula as complex as you want it to be. The formula from the Tossk DPS page is as precise as it gets. It gives you a formula to rank gear based on your current gear and even raid buffs you normally have in your groupings. It doesn’t get any more specific than that.
So, armed with Facemaul and the knowledge from Toskk you can plug your formula into Pawn and you’re ready to go chew some mobs. And Even though you can get the build directly from the Toskk page, here it is so you can go ahead and plug it in while you get over the information overload you’re going to run into. Actually Toskk only lists the absolute bare essential 54 points, so we filled them in with raiding in mind. You might want to move a few of them around if you ever double as a tank or for solo leveling use.
Feral Druid Cat Spec DPS Build For World of Warcraft Patch 3.1
Glyph Suggestions:
- Rip
- Savage Roar
- Shred
So go throw on that extra gear set, grab a couple of mods and go try out a litte hot claw action. You’ll be glad you did if you’ve been in tree or chicken form for way too long. With dual specs it makes for a refreshing change. Plus it’s just another good reasons that druids completely Dominate.

No more melee dps. QQ.
Ah finally someone I can see eye to eye with. The thing about feral dps is that it no longer sucks. Even without epic mods I was pushing 3.5k in mostly quest and 5man gear – no lie. Anyone who’s still got a negative view on kitties needs to wake up and stop living in TBC.
Does this work for any other classes? or is it just the Druid?
The mod Facemauler is specificly built for Feral Druid DPS, however, i’m sure there are some other similar ones for other classes.
i was just wondering if anyone knew of a mod that does what Facemaul does but for an arms warrior. Thanks.
Hi all, point to note: Face Mauler will only work if you have the Mangle Talent, so if your under Level 50, this will not work. The Add-on depends on this talent to make its calculations.
FaceSmasher is the DK equivalent, I don’t know if it has any Talent dependencies.
Cheers
A question from a fellow druid of the tree variety:
After healing my friends all the way to 80, I want to dual spec into a dps build. I’m debating between a cat and chicken. I have enjoyed both in my limited exposure to each form, so mere preference isn’t really the deciding factor for me. Which is actually more valuable to a raid in terms of utility and dps (assuming equivalent gear, playing skill etc)? Please discuss… thanks!
Do chicken as you build a DPS set for feral (or tanking if you please) since your Tree gear will work just fine for decent chicken DPS (although it has no hit).
The other issue with building a good cat set is the fact that you would be rolling off spec on gear that often a rogue will want for main spec, so it can take some time unless your guild is just doing gearing runs for the heck of it.
Hey guys, just wondering then if face Mauler is the one for Kitty dps and Face Smasher is one for DK’s what are the other ones to help us dominate our other classes??
Hello Eltesh. What class do you need it for? I know for example there is Enhancement shaman, there’s pretty much the same thing, it’s named Shock and Awe.
Ho hum. Pawn crashes WoW for me every time I try to load up (loading bar fills, then WoW crashes)… Any known compatibility issues? I’m 100% sure it’s Pawn, because I get no problems when I turn it off.
maybe you uploaded it to the wrong spot when you unzipped it?
When I search curse for pawn, I only get links to bags&inventory mods, do you have an irl or link for this add-on?
good grief – I typed “pawn” into the search function at curse and it was the first thing in the list, but here you go anyway:

Hi all, perhaps you should be looking at RAWL. (May be wrong)
http://www.codeplex.com/Rawr
This is a stand alone Application, it has no interaction with the game like addon’s do.
Simply have a read, its fairly easy to use, but don’t place it in your addon’s directory.
Hope this helps
Cheers
Sorry Law, didn’t see your post before I posted mine.
Another tool is RatingBuster:

Nice post, been waiting for something about feral DPS for a while
As someone mentioned below, RatingBuster is also a pretty nice tool and I’ve been using it since TBC (just can’t live without it right now
)
Thanks for sharing about those mods, never even heard them
I feel stupid, but I can’t find Facemauler, someone provide the link please !!!
thanks
Here you go:

thanks, I actually found it around 30 minutes before you posted it, but i still appreciate you linking it =P
Hey, do you think there be another, expansion if and when.
Nice article, but I have some questions about the spec. The 3 points in Infected Wounds seem to me to be less useful for raiding than some alternatives. Infected Wounds is more of a PvP talent – most if not all bosses are immune to the slowing effect. Feral Charge (great for getting back to DPS range after a boss knockback – more on target time = more DPS), Improved Leader of the Pack (more heals for your DPS is always good, especially if you’re light on paladins and can’t always assume Judgement of Light will be up), or even Feral Instinct for increased Swipe damage on fights with AoE would all be better choices. Facemauler is all about single target DPS, and it’s great at helping clean up the complicated kitty DPS rotation, but it doesn’t take into account multiple targets. There are definitely times where getting enough combo points for Savage Roar and then spamming Swipe will be more DPS when you are dealing with more than one target.
Curse.com says Facemaul is no longer supported and now suggests Feral By Night.
