Solo AOE Frost Powerleveling Mage Spec
Posted on May 21st, 2009 by Nameless Demon Hunter under Efficiency Tips, Faster Leveling, Funny, General Tips, Grinding, Humor, Low Level, PVE, Video, World of Warcraft, WotLKWe have gotten a lot of questions lately on the Mage class, and it’s about time we covered them. Before we get into anything too highfalutin’ though, we better start with getting you guys to 80. Well, there are two ways you can play a mage. You can do it like a lot of people and do it like this:
Funny, yes. Good information – not so much. But that is the way a lot of folks ham through the game. What you end up with is a level 10 mage collecting dust or an 8 month run to 80. None of that here, please.
So, may we offer you a much better solution to this squishy glass cannon? Enter the AoE Frost mage. It’s not like this is anything new, but it’s great because it’s olds. Olds that stick around this long are news because they work like a charm.
Here’s how to put the power of the frost mage to perfect use to powerlevel yourself all the way to 80 in ridiculous time. First, the spec: Frost talents that you need- other than these, feel free to put extra points wherever you see fit.
Even before the spell Blizzard was able to crit, skilled players still used this strategy starting at level 24. Frost has come a long way since old times, and now, AoE killing mobs with blizzard is a lot easier and even more commendable for taking on even the largest of mob clusters. The only stats to focus on are intellect and stamina such as “of the eagle” gear.
I could spend 10 pages trying to describe exactly how to do this, but it works much better to just show you. So here is a video demonstrating how to successfully clear large mob groups using only a mage.
Even despite going against a group of 14, I still only used a regular rotation. Having abilities like ice block, cold snap, and the water elemental summon are my back ups in case something goes wrong (like a mob resisting my frost nova).
I see a lot of videos where people have to use almost all their cool downs just to get 8 or 10 mobs down. As long as you know your limits and stay in control, you will not have to rely on these cool downs every battle – giving you much faster leveling times.
Combine this with questing and there is no reason why a mage cannot level faster than any other class in the game at this time. It’s also great for farming certain kinds of mats and what not. Sure, it takes a little practice, but it’s very, very Dominating.

Unacceptable. You should have posted “In Frost We Trust.” It’s WAAAAAY better. While it’s Pre-BC, 99% of the info is still relevant
There goes everyone and there grandmother, rolling a frost mage.
Frost mages have been AOE grinding since vanilla. There have been videos of it, blog posts of it, 25-page forum threads about it. This is not new information, and it isn’t going to cause everybody to roll a frost mage.
In case you haven’t noticed, Most classes these days are able to aoe grind, including hunters, death knights, mages(durr), paladins, and warlocks.
Those are the classes(minus DK), anyways, that I remember having tough competition with back on the Elemental Plateau in terms of taking down multiple fire elementals. And I know DK’s can aoe fairly well because I play one.
Hey Gavin! Thank you for posting this. Let me say that I JUST got my mage to 70 yesterday using this spec for the majority of the levels. Because it was an alt, it has been one of those 8-month levels to 80; seeing as a I have a druid and warlock to consume most of my time, I play my mage sparingly.
I would like to add a few things. First, Frost Spec is amazing for questing. If you put the points in Improved Elemental (which happens to give Replenishment now) you will rarely run out of mana. Additionally, there is no shortage of “Oh S#^+” buttons to use; I think I died twice my entire way to Northrend… pretty good considering I was also able to solo all the Group quests except for those pesky ones where Blizzard made the target immune to slow effects. >. Slow -> AB -> Missles -> Barrage if they aren’t dead… they will be) that conserves my mana, which not all do, I really love it! I rarely, if ever, have to stop to drink, and things die very quickly, which is always a bonus. But Arcane really doesn’t show you its mighty awesome power until you do an instance (sans the 80s that often run people through). I have never seen such a nice damage output from my mage and STILL be able to go quest. (Oh, and by damage output I mean more DPS than most level 75s can even dream about, unless they are an Arcane Mage of course. I was the lowest character in the group and was more than pulling my own.)
So, if you get tired of Frost in the upper levels, switch to Arcane! (Give it a bit though, you will be missing your Ice Lances at first.) Just don’t forget those 2 or 3 points in Prismatic Shielding…
Been doing this for some time and love it!! Farming meat and leather in the Tundra is great. Groups of mobs you agro using Arcane and then Frost Nova and Blizz. Works a charm
and you end up with quite a few stand in 20 mins.
I would suggest touching on some other specs post level 65 as this is a more confusing issue than what to level as Pre-BC.
I really liked the first video…I almost fell outta my chair laughing.
Rep for that one of the best aoe classes coming back
that first video was hilarious
Once you get to high enough (77) the only way to level is shown in the video LoLAOE

It will take a few attempts to get it right…but then you’re well away. Sadly it was so good Blizzard nerfed the loot table for the mobs….so now they only drop cash and greys
Wanted to thank you guys for taking the time to put up these posts, they are alot of help and if nothing else funny. I know this may be the wrong one to post it in but i was wondering if you had and i missed it or when you would post spec, shot rotations, and glyph suggestions for the other classes like you did with hunters? If not could you point me in the right direction on where to find those. (Just came back after 3months and everything has changed it seems)
LMAO
I <3 melee mage!
jezz, i’m owner of 3 lvl70+ alts, i’ve been strugling with my lvl51 mage since the beginning. Found it too difficult to level, often dying, needed to drink all the time. Killing 10 mobs at the time, i never tought it was feasible without a healer next to u. tks for sharing. i will try tonite.
Hey, it doesn’t take 8 months doing leveling a mage, I’m level 70 since 3 days ago and I’ve been playing him for maybe 2 years now! Yes, I’m serious, I do suck.
Sigh… give it a month or two and mages will be over run once again : \
Thats bull crap and everyone knows it, Frost mages dont pwn anymore.
Wohoo ! There goes the neighbourhood.Seriously thanks for the mage advice.
