Casual Corner

New Feature Series On Dominate Your Server
We really strive to bring a little something to the table for everyone. And considering that there are far more casual gamers than pros out there we thought it was time we did something just for them.
We do a lot of tips and tricks for those on the back end of the learning curve. And everyone loves it when we dig up the very useful yet obscure tip that no one else ever thought of. But those are hardly growing on trees, so you’ll have to wait.
In the meantime, we’ve decided to start a new feature segment called the Casual Corner. If there is one thing for sure in WoW, it’s that everyone is a noob in some way. Some people spend their entire WoW existence having turret’s-like bouts of noob, while others live in a constant state of noob.
And don’t give me that crap that you’re all pro now. Everyone is a nerd some times. There are a few of you that make far fewer mistakes than others, but since most of the folks who play are casual gamers, we figured a little humor about life as a nub would hit everyone in the funny bone.
As it turns out Lawbringer is drowning in just the right sort of candidates for this kind of material. Everyone in the family (with a few exceptions) has picked up the game and they are progressing at various rates of skill (with a few exceptions) and having a blast doing so.
It turns out that running with the nub squad is always pretty fun. You get to see the game in a different light than in those Ulduar raids. You remember how bad you really were at one time, and laugh together when someone falls off the boat. It would drive me nuts in a raid, but with the chicks it’s pretty funny.
So let me introduce the members of the Casual Corner crew:
- Ellimace – Moneybaggins (cough, Lawbringer’s) main squeeze
- PetitePowerhouse – Law’s mom and burgeoning AH guru
- Teacake – Law’s much smarter and more stable sister
- Cameo – whoever else Law can cajole into writing anything funny
You probably won’t learn much in the Casual Corner, and there certainly won’t be any theory-crafting. And since it’s for entertainment purposes only (not available in all states) there is a rule here as well. No hate speech in the threads. Casual Corner is a nerd rich and odd friendly place where the real cool kids hang out.
Or whatever, but really the point here is to point out how bad at this we all once were, and how some are either oblivious to their own struggles, or struggling like heck to look like they aren’t struggling. So the eldest member of the all girl crew PetitePowerhouse has agreed to make the first installment – enjoy, and may you one day Dominate in self-satirical prose.

The Path To The WoW Draft – PetitePowerhouse
When you’ve lived long enough you come to the realization that there is only so much TV you can enjoy. You find that after 40 years of the tube you’ve pretty much seen it all. I can actually remember a time when there was no TV AT all. There are only so many times a day you can feed the chickens, only so many flower beds you can stand to weed, only so much time you can spend on the phone with the 3 year old grandchild. As it turns out I woke up one day and realized I was just freakin’ bored.
I needed something to do and watching TV while we fell asleep cracking pecans wasn’t cutting it. My daughter was playing, Law’s wife was playing, the son-in law was playing and the husband didn’t care who was playing.
Now, I don’t watch no TV any more (I mean I don’t abstain from it completely) I do really enjoy football. I know it’s not right for the little old lady to scream and yell at the guys running into each other at top speed trying to kill each other, but it’s just fun.
I like it so much I’ve watched the last 5 NFL drafts. We just got done watching every hour of this year’s draft as a matter of fact. I have no clue what happened, but I like it just the same.
I hear that if you’re going to keep your mind (yes this is the old person’s way of saying this – a young person would say keep your mind ACTIVE or some trash) you have to mentally challenge yourself. WoW is by far the most challenging thing a person my age can do. The last time I took on a technological challenge of this magnitude it was the unfortunate attempt to program a VHS VCR – there was smoke and possibly screaming. Actually to this day no one has ever been able to program one of those things which is why TiVo was invented, not even kids could do that crap.
Everyone was playing WoW, and my daughter, Teacakes wanted me to give it a shot. I was being recruited like one of those college athletes – ok, maybe not so much. Definitely not like Crabtree or Sanchez (probably more like the punter the Lions picked up as an un-drafted free agent – you’ll never hear from HIM) but Law was always saying how it was more fun to play as a pair, and Teacakes needed a crew to roll wit.
Well I was ready to get started. Enough of this being a granny junk. I was ready to kick some butt, Law was skeptical to say the least. And sure enough I was lost in the character creation screen. I must have spent two hours looking at hair. Law is trying to explain the finer points of race selection and I’m looking at which ones have the best earrings. That was the first of many “sighs” I have gotten from Law. Night elves were out, I don’t do face tattoos.
I had so much to learn about so many things; quests, quest logs, bags, right click this, left click that, spells, flight paths, zeppelins, picking herbs, auctions, gear, mail, vendors, talents, (what the heck is a paper doll slot on a video game?), maps, dying, dying again. I still don’t know how to use chat. And it’s awfully hard to concentrate on a tutorial to learn all those things when you’re walking into walls and falling off of things. For some reason I seem to always end up in the water.
So WoW has been more than just a challenge. There is soooooo much to learn. I’m not sure what I’ve learned yet, but I love it. Today I was fishing and some guy slapped me, spit on me and shot me the bird. Then he jumped around in front of me until I accidentally hit him with my fishing pole – he killed me – instantly. I still have no idea how to do the emote for “turn the other cheek.”
But in the process I’ve actually seen most of Northrend (playing an alt in a group with Law) and I have my very own level 40. Perhaps in the not-so-distant future I’ll grind up to 80 myself. Now Law says the game just begins at 80, at which time I’ll need another long series of tutorials. (He says I’m doing better about the walking into walls thing – water, not so much)
So that’s how I got drafted into Dominate. I might not make the pro bowl, but I plan on having a long and fun career here. If you see me on Fenris say hi – I won’t be able to say anything back, but I’ll be thinking “HI!” Silent and deadly . . .but I can /wave. So you’ll have to get close, but perhaps we’ll just team up with Law and the rest of the crew and go do a little Dominating.

so yeah.. i replied to this post about 5 seconds after Law started uploading it.. and the only thing posted was the pic at the top..
at least u didnt scream out “FIRST!!?!?!?!?”
Nice change up here, I like it. While I do raid Naxx and another guild I run with sometimes has plans to start the 25 man Ulduar next week after we get a few more of their guildies geared (hope they let me go). I find I am much more casual then the other raiders. I laugh when we wipe and get in trouble for it, I fall off walls, fall off cliffs, fall out of the Naxx meeting area, and so on. Some folks choose to bash me until we actually get in the instance I in the top 5 or 6 for damage done. That usually shuts them up without me ever haviong to respond to their pokes, slaps, spits, rude getures and so on.
My most recent Noobish event happened in Naxx 25 man last week on the four horsemen. I was the only huntard in the group and was asked to MD (misdirect) the main tanks boss. Well I screwed it up and MDed the wrong person and then had to wait for the cooldown to go away and the stacked heals would have worn off by then lol. So the tank just jumped in and started the fight. I MD for my guild all the time in dungeons, so the fact that this was not one of our guild runs and we had been invited to run with a larger raiding guild then we are completely embarassed me. Even with that mess up they still invite me back for runs every night but I am not sure if it is for comic relief or because they really need me lol. I am decently equiped and always top 10 to top 5 in damage done so I hope thats why they ask me back lmao.
Derisaan level 80 Dranei Hunter – Kirin-Tor
I like it! I have been a computer and game geek for a long time and I had a brief flirtation with EverQuest a long time ago, but WoW is really my first MMO. I only started in September ‘08, so I still have the nub days fresh in my mind. Like yesterday when I did all my dailies and forgot to take out my orphan.
Thanks for the laughs, PetitePowerhouse. It is definitely laughing WITH you.
Stomperbears lvl74 NE Hunter – Steamwheedle Cartel
DAMN! that is so kool i have twop brothers and two technically minded parents… (i say technically minded but really ive forced them into using a computer properly) adn they still won’t play WoW,
….
one of my brothers finds internet gaming terrible and the other one has the attention span of a gnat and therefore won’t sit still long enough though zelda successfuly held him in hisd chair for a whole summer so i don’t see what the problem is… and my parents are always resistent to playing my games even though they like the logic and interest in doing stuff.. they need a life skill involved
but you lawbringer u have ur whole family involved that is awesome. were i on the American Servers i would swing by to make some more friends but i seem to be hugely connected to my Eu account after so much time involved.
I sense this might seem like more of a complaint of my family then a congratulations and also nice one for the casual corner but honestly it is. Best of luck to your family in improving their running skills
Nice going, ma’am..
I’ve been playing since april ‘05.. my main is a raiding Holy priestess.. it gets intense, sometimes. One time, I just yelled out “Sod this, I’m respeccing shadow!”
( I didn’t, though )
To relieve the stress, I rolled an alt… that was about 18 months ago.. now I have 5 80’s.. sigh.
it’s addictive, I tells ya!
oh, and me? I’m 51.
Gratz, and welcome to the (obsession) Game!
I think its cool that, in this world, i have run into people of All age groups and all walks of life.
I think it’s one of the things that makes the game special. It’s “simple” enough to play, and even Dominate – with the right help. Fun is, after all, where you find it.
Gratz to the LawBringer Clan!
Might just have to roll a MooCow on Fenris to see how you guys fair =)
Cheers…
I love it! Casual Corner will be one of my favorite columns. And Petite Powerhouse is my new heroin(as in hero, you sicko’s). I’m old enough to be a Grandparent myself(never had kids, tho, which is probably why I have the time & resources to play WoW now, hehe). Like Stomperbears above, I’ve been a computer gamer for a long while(1980 – Apple II Plus w/the orig. Castle Wolfenstein(still have them)) and have always preferred the less confrontational single player approach. WoW is my first MMORPG, and I still prefer the more casual PvE soloing approach to the game(case in point – I’ve played about 3 dozen toons on 4 srvrs over 2 1/2 yrs., and my highest is a lvl 64 Dwarven huntard. Can you spell ADHD?). And while I do enjoy aiding a toon in need and the occasional instance w/a PUG, I’ve only ever dueled a couple of times and have never PvP’d, done a BG, Arena or Raid.
OK, you get the point. I am a veteran noob(is that an oxymoron?)!! This column is my cup of tea, and I’ll keep an eye out for every new installment. Thanks, Law, for not forgetting from whence we all came. And Petite Powerhouse, you rock! You have given this old gamer a renewed sense of purpose and relevance. I’ll certainly give you a /hug when I see you in-game on Fenris. Who knows, maybe I’ll even give raiding a try when my toons ‘grow up’(whenever that may be…
)!!
LOL I had to laugh because it reminds me soo much of my own struggle to get a character just past lvl 10, I think that took me a month, I would make a toon, get to 5 or so and not like it so much, I finally got a warlock to lvl 15, then dropped him too, and never actually got into a character that I felt I could control very well until I found my mage (about a year and a half later) took me 6 months to lvl her to 59, just in time for the BC expansion. I had a lot more time to play at this time, so in the next month I lvld to 70, and “began” to learn the end game raiding.
Anyway, just thought I’d throw in my 2 year stuggle to get to the “start point” of the game. This new thread is definitely a great idea, and brings about some reminiscence.
I was just wondering after reading this post what is Casual Corner about so far it seems each members of the group getting a article on their history but after that what topics will we discuss that are casual. Are we going to cover stuff like “useless fun items” or cool wardrobes for characters I’m just wondering because either I missed the whole theme of Casual Corner or am I not the only one who isn’t exactly sure what this is. Maybe after a few more articles for Casual Corner I’ll finally understand it.
Sorry forgot to add this to other post. If we are doing random articles then can I throw a couple out there. If you want someone who spends him time doing pointless things is World of Warcraft than thats me when I got my warrior to lvl 30 I did so much useless things that I stayed at lvl 30 for a month.
Hehe, I disagree, the beginning of the game isnt at 80 or at the level cap, imo there is only one beginning and a never ending “life”. Me and my friend tend to call our lowbie alts “babies” because technically they are, if you were to ask any 80 to describe their adventures through azeroth when they first started out, it’s like hearing an epic tale, like the odyssey. And it never ends there, and don’t ask about statistics, ask the kewl stuff, like the World PvP skirmishes they got into, or any type of hard battle, and if you put it together, it starts sounding like a story, and it continues to build, that is why i like this game, you can start over and over a clean slate up to ten times per server on top of 50 bajillion different other servers, sure i love to PvP im an addict and yeah i suck a lot, but get into a world PvP raid group and roam azeroth in large numbers, you will start to feel the power trip and if you become hunted by either horde or alliance, you can always have that bragging right of telling the epic story of how you defeated the other faction on your own server. Or just have some nice little fun getting ganked and callingi n reinforcements to make it bigger xD my point is, begginings spawn from expieriences, and what you do in azeroth, so do it and enjoy them!
Great article Petite. Bless your heart. I’ve been playing since the inception of WoW, but I consider myself a hard core casual player.
My wife, mother and father – in – law, little brother – in – law and multiple friends play. And it’s great to see where everyone’s skill levels are. One thing I know for sure. The best times of my WoW life were when I was starting playing the game. Those times made for the best stories. Welcome aboard, and cheers!!!
OMGosh…I love to see Grannys playin’ WoW. 49 here with 5 grandkids. I now have 2-80’s on Llane. Are my NooB days gone, boy I hope not !! I am known as “Nana” on my server: Horde FTW !!
Welcome to WOW ma’am. I hope your experience is enjoyable and fun! I am glad to see you took on a new experience rather than accept the boredom that many people feel when they “retire”.
Cheers!
Its clear, this is a popular idea. Being a bit older myself than the average player (in my 30s) I am always happy when someone admits they are not 18-20 (I suspect some people fudge the truth). And embracing your inner-newb is the best way to diffuse the accusation (ie. “You r a nµµb” response: “yeah, does it embarrass you that I just pwnd you? lol”). As for the younger folks, I actually play with my friend’s kids, and it can be fun, though sometimes it is a bit trying when his 7 year old runs around my guild meeting waiting for me yelling “PICKLES!” . In G-chat everyone asks “Any one know him?” and “who brought the noob?” I just feign ignorance… Lastly, and just to prove that I am not a complete noob, I would like to mention to Petite Power that (if I remember correctly, I have been on my Draenei for a while) you can erase the facial tattoos on a night elf at the barber shop. I am full of “important” wow facts like that…hehe (and I am sure that if I am wrong, I will prove that I am a total noob…remember, no hating here!)
My husband and I are 35, started playing in our early 30s and I “recruited” him and now he’s just as addicted. My friends all come to me for useless and occasionally useful WoW knowledge lol
I love it. I remember doing the same things she describes. BTW, I still get distracted by TV or my son while running/riding and fall off cliffs. And I laugh about it. I also have a bad habit on my rogue of thinking I’m stealthed and go to sap a mob and wonder why they’re all running after me, DOH lol.
To get an accurate number I will have to check my stats but in 80 levels I have died from falling somewhere around 30 times. Now that seems like a small number until you talk the people you play with and they have died from falling 15 times or 7 times or 5 times …. LOL
Celestina of Aerie Peak
i love this ha ha, its so me, been playing for a year and if i wasnt bald id be blonde, still act like a noob a least once a day its good for your elf !!!!!
if you ever come over to alonsus give a yell !!!
While i have always enjoyed your articles, it will be a nice change of pace to read stuff that doesn’t have a focus on raiding… i have been playing wow since the day it was released and i am what you would call a strictly solo player, i have 2 80’s 6 or 7 70+ toons and in all these years i have been in a grand total of probably 5 dungeons, the last one being at least 2 years ago, i didn’t have much luck with pug’s. So hopefully we will see a few more articles geared toward solo play.
It is good to see someone that can help us older people whos fingers are not as fast as the young kids. I am fifty one and have met many older players on Wow. I was amazed that there are so many Moms and Dads that play. Maybe we need to start an Oldies realm? Thanks for the new twist on things.
Aw, man your so lucky to have family members joining you online, my moms to busy with work and my dad only knows how to surf the net and turn on the computer, and my sister she atleast tried it the one year back in ‘06 or ‘07 gnome lock never got past lvl five then she quit…But yea I’m still jealous.
To PetitePowerhouse /wave
After one year of late meals because “Guys, dinner is READY!!” fell on deaf ears. After many meals which I delivered (meat cut in small bites) to several computer screens in the house so the participants of epic battles, flower picking and respecing….would not die of scurvy…I actually stopped to LOOK at the screens. WOW!!!!! My my three sons, hubby and daughter-in-law (in different locations across the country) were “together” in this place having a great time while I played Betty Crocker in the kitchen. I bought a computer.
Like PetitePowerhouse I was totally lost – never in my life have I played a computer game. My son did a lot of /face palm as he took me through the opening steps of the game /slash wrists. Now I have one hot bod and green hair! That was three years ago. This grandmother of 13 now is a Guild Leader on Whisperwind. Need a hunter? Shammy? Priest How about a D.K.? I’ll be there.
Achievements – go ahead, check my resume and my pink underwear!
Skills – 450 – you bet!
Hunter pets – elite ones!
Companion pets – heading to the forest for that fawn!
Tournament – got my little kid to carry my flags.
I Do have a problem with those lava waves around Sarth – may need new glasses…
Some nights Anguisher (hubby) brings MY dinner to the computer screen! No one has scurvy —YET.
Safe Journeys and Good Hunting,
