Professions And Death Knights – A Redux
Posted on March 19th, 2009 by Lawbringer under Death Knights, Efficiency Tips, Exploits, General Tips, Gold Building, Gold Farming, Grinding, Jewelcrafting, Low Level, Trade Skills, World of Warcraft, WotLK“A funny thing happened to Lawbringer yesterday.”
I was beginning to think everyone had fallen asleep. It’s been a while since we stirred up any real controversy (ie. the rogue article by he whose name shall not be spoken) but let me tell you that when Law steps in something it’s a big steamy pile of Kodo poo.
It was the perfect storm of events that lead me to perhaps the greatest brain fart of my tenure here at DYS. And what I REALLY wish is that I had saved it for 13 more days – it would have been the perfect April Fool’s gag. So before anyone thinks I’ve lost my marbles here is what happened.
I’ve been kicking myself for a couple of weeks about not doing Jewelcrafting on at least one of my 80’s. And since I don’t farm mats it’s been bugging me that I didn’t knock that sucker out while leveling instead of engineering or something. So I’ve been chewing on how to fix the issue on not only the Horde side, but also on the little army of Alliance toons I have working their way to 80.
You see, I don’t like JC at all. It’s a royal pain with very little profit potential overall (don’t argue with me on that one) compared to say enchanting. So with my bankers’ mindset I have always ignored it like my wife’s smelly dog and avoided it completely. But with my toons now getting bit after bit of 25 man raid gear and almost every single one with sockets to fill (and building that PvP and feral off set for the drood I might add) the gem costs were beginning to make me mad.
I also am not super fond of Death Knights. I will never play one. They just don’t interest me at all. I know some of you guys think they are the best thing since sliced sushi but I can’t see playing another DK among the 5 bazillion DK’s on our server.
Next, I already have four level 80’s on the Horde side, and every single one has two profession maxxed at 450. To add Jewelcrafting I was faced with the prospect of running some trash toon to 60, transferring a level 50 from another account and THEN leveling to 60, OR (sigh) biting the bullet and pushing up a DK to 60. Then you have the problem that if I used the DK to do JC he would have to get to at least 70 to do the JC dailies and 80 makes more sense so now I’m pissed that I need to burn a profession on one of the 80’s and then do it all over again on the DK . . . . .frustration sets in.
Combine all of that with some serious wife aggro AND the fact that in the software we use to run DYS the “SAVE” and “PUBLISH” buttons are right next to each other in the preview screen and WHACK! Lawbringer made a booboo. But let’s set the record straight shall we?
It takes a little bit of mental agility from time to time to ‘think’ about the game like the average dude out there in Azeroth. Now, I don’t mean that to say they are average players, we certainly know a LOT of our readers are fantastic – just read the feedback we get. But in order to do what Gavin and I do we have sort of gotten a little – well – weird.
So when I wrote – “just nab 4 DK’s to do all the professions with and give your main the good stuff” it makes perfect sense to me because every single one of my 80’s is on a separate account. So there I was watching Sports Center at 1am this morning when it hit me what a TERRIBLE article I had written because I do things kind of oddly and the whole thing was just pretty dumb to the guy with only one account.
So YES – I am aware that you can only have one DK per server. So MY ability to drop a whole team of DK’s onto Fenris to do professions does not amount to advice that any normal human being could follow. So let’s try this again, now that I’m back in a little place you guys call reality.
Maximizing Professions With Death Knights
We’ve always recommended that everyone should strive to have a toon with every profession in the game. And since WotLK this has become a pretty steep challenge, especially for the new player. The thought of taking 6 toons – to level 60 at the minimum can be a little staggering even with the changes to experience gains.
To really throw a few more rocks into the mix, Blizz decided to have a few professions give a toon such great buffs that a serious player can hardly ignore them. So I’ve changed my mind a bit about professions (read above
) and there really is a better way to manage them than we’ve been able to before.
Enter the Death Knight. The DK starts at level 55, and by the time you even leave the starting area you should be around 58. DK’s also level wickedly fast, so even if you choose to go all the way to 80 with the guy you’ve got a 55 level head start on anything else.
Since you have to hit level 60 to train Grand Master level in any profession the DK is a sweet choice for filling up your ability to make just about anything in the game with professions without ever really having to depend on the Auction House.
So let’s start from the beginning with this. We’re going to give you the whole list of professions, sorted in order of our own completely subjective and arbitrary system of importance. Then we will tell you why we rank them this way and which ones you should probably give your DK as a part of a complete system of Domination.
- Enchanting – the mother load of gold making. If you only have 1 profession this is the one to have
- Jewelcrafting – wicked JC only gems in 3 slots
- Blacksmithing – 2 extra gem slots for those killer JC only gems
- Inscription – by far the best shoulder enchant in the game, cya Sons of Hodir rep.
- Alchemy – 4 hour flasks and a bigger buff from every flask you use, nice.
- Mining – if you simply MUST farm, it’s hard to beat mining, plus toughness bonus.
- Herbalism – another decent way to kill time and make some dough, plus an extra heal.
- Tailoring – still a nice choice, some of the epic patterns are very good.
- Leatherworking – on par with tailoring.
- Engineering – sigh on the vendor mats for the cycle being 15k eh?
- Skinning – last, and probably least, except for maybe a rogue.
Now if you’ve been reading DYS for a while we have always said that the way to maximize your earning potential is to have almost every profession so you can ‘feed’ yourself mats and make stuff to sell. It will really put you on a whole new level of gold earning potential. However, before WotLK professions were basically only really useful for making gold, but Wrath changed all that.
NOW, you definitely want to consider how much you may be missing out on your main if you’re doing something JUST to make extra coin with your profession with no thought to the buffs you could be getting from something else. It is VERY hard to beat the Blacksmithing/Jewelcrafting combo for sheer killing power bonuses (or healing or tanking or whatever you want to insert there).
So our revised advice is this: you still HAVE to have an enchanter at level 375, but you should really consider JC, BS, Insc. or Alch for your main raiding toon. It would be better to say and. JC and BS, Insc. and Alch – something like that. You really cannot afford to completely ignore just how much power you are giving up by not using two of those professions. (yes LW is not a horrid choice either, and Ench does get ring enchants).
And I know this is hard to swallow for some of you (like myself) who really REALLY hate JC. But I may just have to bite the bullet and do it. Substituting 3 Runed Dragon’s Eye for 3 Runed Scarlet Ruby is an increase of 39 spell power, and when you combine that with Blacksmithing so that you only give up one ruby over your current gear it’s an increase of 77 spell power. 77 SP is nothing to sneeze at.
Flask of the Frost Wyrm goes from 125 spell power buff to 156 with alchemy (and from 2 to 4 hours duration), and the difference between Greater Inscription of the Crag and Master’s Inscription of the Crag is 37 spell power. Those two professions together give you 68 more spell power.
So the point here is that you definitely want to consider how professions help your raiding toons just as much (if not more) than which ones earn you the most gold. Now, what the heck does a DK have to do with all of this? Well that sort of depends on whether your DK IS your main or not, but you’re going to have to live with yourself on that one and sort through the rest of this the best you can.
If your main is NOT a DK, then you have two good options. The first, and probably best option is to give the DK Enchanting and then Leatherworking or Tailoring, although you will probably want to get them to level 80 anyway if you go the tailoring/LW route just to make it easier to sort of max those two things out. You have to hit Exalted to get the epic spellthreads from some folks so that might be more than you want to do – but chanting is a no brainer here. Enchanting has a “buy the recipes” system that has nothing to do with rep, so a level 60 can hit 450 just as easily as a level 80.
Because we mostly use our enchanter for DE work as it is, there is no real reason to have our main be our enchanter, so a DK chanting alt is a great fit.
Next, you could also choose to have your DK be your farming toon. Give that dude herbalism and mining and have him feed you with mats. The catch to this one is a bit like the one above, in that this will work far better at level 80 with an epic flying mount. Still, starting a toon at level 55 makes the run to 80 a LOT easier than leveling up a new toon from 1 and it certainly makes more sense than blowing a profession slot on your main for a profession better suited to an alt.
Now, up until now I’ve been speaking to the guy with one or two 80’s and a single account. For those of you with something along the lines of “you have how many accounts?” using DK’s for your professions is really slick. One DK on all of your accounts and you can have all of the professions covered in no time flat. Plus, you can save the professions with the best bonuses for your level 80 raiding toons.
As I mentioned in my “omg I lost my mind” part of this post above – I have 4 accounts, so popping a DK on each one to pick up the straggler professions like gathering professions and Leatherworking will allow me to drop herbalism from my Druid main and pick up something really useful such as Jewelcrafting without really giving up much time. I mean, honestly, nothing is easier to level than herbalism anyway. A DK could do it in about 2-4 hours. Plus I have plenty of gold for mounts and what not so it sure beats having wasted professions on toons I would like to raid with.
Instead of wasting professions just to have the professions around in case I need them, it certainly seems like a better plan these days to put those professions on a wasted TOON. And I can’t think of a better place to waste a toon than a DK – just kidding actually. But the DK does have the advantage of starting at 55, and that fact alone makes them worthy of serious consideration when it comes to Dominating with professions.
ps. It’s a shame that the other post had to go the comments were REALLY entertaining to read. Keep them coming folks, and yes, Lawbringer is very human after all.

Only problem is that you can only have one DK per server…
OMG! didnt this post just clear this up, wasting a first comment on sumthing like this…. truely disgusting.
Hello I have never posted on before on this site, though I have followed it for a long time and would like to say in general you have done a great job on it I have learned or confirmed of lot of what I know. There are a few things I would like to comment on professions.
. I think consider a few points you need a gather (perhaps not just a gather though) and instead of just vender those extra low mats save them for later to help you if or when you make your next alt.
Firstly I have never really understood why anyone would want to have more then one account let a lone four. I understand you can play both Horde and Alliance on the same server but besides of that I don’t see the reason I have only one account and have 7 toons on one server not to mention those on others that I use when my main server goes down.. I have all the trades covered off with the exception of Inscription which I am not sure I will bother with unless I make another alt to drop it on (just cause). I mainly use the skills on all of them to build up the others in areas where I require or help out friends and guildies, so I have not really went out to “Dominate my Server” perhaps someday.
Secondly I just dropped mining on my Pally (who is already a max levelled JC) to be replaced with BS just so I could get the benefits of both. I am setting up for the patch when we can dual spec figured I would get more usefulness out of a Tank/Healer with a Pally since those two types are always in demand. But to do this I have wasted a lot of gold buying mats (which I hate) course the other option is to go mine them on one of my other alts (which I hate more so less of two evils).
Brings me to my point the Pally I mention was never to be more then to just do the JC daily. I liked playing him but I like my others a little more but things keep changing. So for those who do not have a ton of toons or four accounts
Iz
lol
way to cover your ass
Guv
p.s. I’d never play a DK either
Not so much cover my rear as making things right. The premise was solid the first time but the execution left a LOT to be desired. We have good days and not so good ones like everyone else. Plus I admit it was not good, and I certainly don’t want that to reflect on the site as a whole so making it better is just what needed to happen. Even if it was 12 hours too late.
While you can only “create” one DK per server, once created, they are just like any other character and may be transferred to the server of your choice. This can be done by either by paying for the transfer, or using the free character transfer. You may have as many DK’s on the same account on the same server as you wish to pay for transfers for.
I have 2 accounts at the moment so I can have 2 DKs. I rolled a DK on my second account and made him an enchanter. I levelled him through Outlands from 58 to 66 DEing all the rewards from levelling and got my Enchanting to 350. I then had a guildie port him to Dalaran where I picked up Master. He is currently at 360 or so and can now do the beginning of some very good enchants for all my level 80s on my other account (since I can log in with both and enchant equipment already soulbound). While I levelled my toons to 80, I sent the DK everything BOE to DE. As a result, I have many stacks of infinite dust, cosmis essence and dream shards. I also have a level 70 toon how has 450 skinning/LW, another level 70 with herb/alch at 450, a level 80 with mining/Eng 450 and a another 80 with herb/inscription (450/443).
I have equipped both my 80s so far with epic level 200 gear that can be made by my leather worker and had the titansteel neck and rings made for both. The only things I’ve bought have been frozen orbs when I’ve been short.
What is proposed here does work. I’ve been doing it for ages most seriously after wotlk came out. And I only used 1 DK that doesn’t have a second profession yet. And btw, I hate the DK – I find it a boring class to play.
Booze and Deadlines dont Mix – Trust me =)
No booze involved, it was 9am.
It was just Lawbringer being…well…Lawbringer… lolz….
That means it was 5:00 pm somewhere…
Lawbringer,
I have 3 accounts. I read your original post and was immediately on the same page as you. Currently, none of my accounts have a DK because I am not a big fan of them.
Your original post came through just fine for me, and I appreciate the tip. I too find it difficult to change into ‘normal guy’ mode from time to time.
ahhhhhh maybe I am just a tad strange but I picked up on the multiple accounts the first time!
Multiple DK’s = Multiple accounts.
Even I have two accounts in a way. Mine and the demonic spawn from hell’s account. I think you are slap NUTS for that many accounts but what the heck, to each his own.
Even if you should choose to be a pond sucking hordy
I had many account at one time on another game i played ,, there are plus’s and negatives to having that many accounts ,, on the game i played at the time it delt with housing .. i haven’t found the need to have more then one account in this game ,, but yes i can see why some people might feel the need to do it .
i have really enjoyed reading everything DYS has had to write on here , it helped me in a lot of different ways and made my game play a lot more fun, thanks guys for all the help you have given to all of us , and keep up the good work ..
not sure if this was covered but i know on my server infinite dust sells for a truck load, so a good way to make money is to have JC mining and a DE person on ur side, you mine up all the eternal earths and shadows you can get and have a JC person turn them into the rings made from them, these rings can then be DE into dust and essences and you have instant improvement of value, this makes JC always a solid choice, dont know why you didnt have it before?
You can DE a lot of items from any profession, not just JC. Besides, why go to the trouble of farming when there are hundreds of items available every week at the AH that you can turn at least 100% profit on by purchasing to DE – no farming for me bro.
I can end up with a dozen stacks of infinite dust and Greater Cosmic essences in 1/10th the time it would take to farm mats. Gold per hour is the key. And while JC has some things you can DE, I actually find that Tailoring is the better option considering that cloth is a lot easier to get in any volume (if you know where to go). Doing an expensive and/or extremely time consuming profession to DE a few things is hardly an efficient use of your time.
The real key to having a JC is the ability to prospect for and then cut your own gems. It’s more of a gold saving issue than a gold making one. Besides – JC was such a horrid profession in BC for doing much of anything unless you had the very rarest cuts that it wasn’t really worth the effort. I just didn’t bother with it after Wrath is all.
ah but also ur server will have a much more stable economy than mine, mine was fresh right b4 wrath, ore only sells for 20g a stack of saronite, gems are worse, the only ones worth selling are red ones, rest are about 10-15 gold or less uncut so it is the only real money maker from mining on my server
Great article. And to all you DK haters. Come on! Where’s the luv? I like a toon that can cast spells and whack the heck out of mobs. Along comes the DK. My prayers are answered! I love mine. And now he’s gonna be an enchanter. Thanks for the article Lawbringer. I wish I had seen the “weird” one first
It would have had you scratching your head going “WTF???”
Well, Pallys can cast spells and whack mobs, but they did suck for way too long. Now I’m upset my main is one cause loads of people rolled them when 3.0 came along.
First time commenter, long time reader, I got that you use multiple accounts…but as to the one DK per server, well I have a friend on my server who leveled an aliance DK, and then decided to do an experiment. He went and created a new DK on the horde side on a diffrent server..leveled a bit, then did a paid server transfer back to the same server with the aliance DK. Now, maybe blizz just wasn’t watching this bit of trickery or what…but he still has two DK’s one aliance one horde on the same server to this day, and its been several months.
Just curious if anyone else has tried this trick or not.
By the way, JC dailies start at 375 JC skill at level 77! NOT level 70.
But otherwise the advice is sound, I use Mining and JC on my DK, so crafting epics through guildies, or my BS alt is really easy, plus I get so much ore flying around ice-crown for half hour that I never have to buy any gems (and Icy Prism sometimes drops Dragon’s Eye too, which is nice).
I think as a Death Knight this is a great combo, as the amount of times I have to respec between DPS and Tanking, and with all the gear I have that i’m constantly regemming, mining helps to make this effortless, and free.
I am actually using all 10 character slots too, all 70 or higher; self-crafting from any professions saves you loads of time and gold, you just have to find the time to go herbing/skinning/mining in between raiding & heroics etc…
“By the way, JC dailies start at 375 JC skill at level 77! NOT level 70.”
Actually, my level 71 paladin hasn’t done anything except JC dailies (and the rare other quest in the area) since arriving in Northrend. She is 450 JC now too, but started the dailies at lower skill (over 375, but can’t remember exactly). Almost all of them can be done in Howling Fjord; there’s one that the lowest zone for is Dragonblight – but still doable at 70.
I’ve got at least one of every profession on my account (multiple 70+), and I love the interconnectedness and self-sufficiency. Inscription vellums were the perfect last piece of the puzzle in never having to rely on another player for anything.
Now I just need to get my second miner to 77 so she can efficiently farm Northrend ore, and I’ll be all set to switch my main from mining/BS to BS/JC. Second miner is an engi too, so farming on her is doubly good for elemental stuff.
LOL I was one of the ones going WTF is he smoking or is he drinking too much green beer. LOL Nice to see it was what I thought, multiple accounts.
Exactly what I’m doing. You made me realize to “waste” the DK. I don’t really want them at 80 because I’m not a real fan of them, but the perk to ride 20% faster makes it a superior gatherer. This way I don’t have to waste a slot to mining or herbing on my main, and I’m still having a nice income if I wish to farm. My main can get the professions that give raiding perks (alchemy, BS, enchanting, JC or inscription) + tailoring to provide bags for my alts (I leveled tailoring anyway, so I might just keep it).
Just letting you know that, unless something has changed within the last couple of days, you can become a Grand Master in a profession at lvl 55 not 60. My lock just hit 55 and she’s a Grand Master in both alchemy and herbalism.
@ Femorill
yes you can do that! better yet to save the transfer cost i applied the following trick (be aware wont always work but try it on a regular basis if it fails)
** mini guide **
1. on a server where your main (not a dk) is make a dk
2. level it to level 60 -lets call this one A-
3. delete this toon (be sure to write the name down)
4. create a new dk (can be either) -lets call this one B-
5. level toon to 60
6. now the tricky part: open a ticket on your main and request a character restoration of the first DK (A) be sure to state in the ticket that you had that DK transferred to that server -leave out paid transferred that will get you in trouble-
7. another tricky part: go offline and dont log on for a few hours (gm’s will /w you serverwide and we do not want that)
8. if all went well when you log in again you have 2 dk’s (A+B) on one server.
** end mini guide**
Actually i did this as my little experiment and ended up with 5(!) DK’s on one server and since im a sucker for horde chars i now got them all leveling them faster the lightning and making tons of cash making use of all the available proffessions.
Just a clarification re JC Prismatic gems and your comments in this and last post. [example refers to SP for the toons that cares about SP, but the idea holds for others attributes] Yes the prismatics are 19 SP better than the red RSR (runed scarlet ruby) they replace. But the slightly less obvious advantage is the prismatic. If you have non-red sockets then you either have gems that are less than 19 SP or you put RSR but are losing the socket bonus. Putting the prismatic in place of a gem that is not a RSR will give you more than 19 SP increase; replacing a RSR in blue/yellow socket will give you the +19SP plus the socket bonus. Similarly, in the prismatic belt slot you always put RSR or whatever is your best gem.
I’m glad to see you haven’t (completely) lost your mind. I read the first post and I was just sitting there like “lolwut?” since I only have one account.
Herbalism has got to be one of the SLOWEST professions to level!
You said “nothing is easier to level than herbalism.” Well I have no idea how you can go from 1 to 350 in 2 – 4 hours? The only way to level herbalism is to pick flowers. Thats a lot of running around.
Mining is WAY easier to level. Simply goto the AH and buy ore then smelt it and gain profession points. What could be easier than that?
I can go from 1 to 350 in one hour or less!
About your having more than one account… In order for what you are saying to work, you would need to be constantly moving toons from one realm to another, every time you needed to supply your main. That’s a lot of $25 character moves! You must be rich!
