WotLK Quest Achievements Howto Part 1: Mine Sweeper
As many of you probably know, there are a hefty amount of achievements under the quest tab generally involving the completion of quests in zones. Yet, there are two achievements that are commonly overlooked by people every day, and they are really easy to do if you have lady luck, patience, planning, and time. These achievements are: Mine Sweeper and Rapid Defense.
Both achievements add ten points to your total (which if you’re like me means everything) and completing them will finish off the quest section of the Wrath of the Lich King tab (considering you’ve done everything else). I am going to cover with you a little guide of sorts to show you the easiest and best way to do both achievements.
In the Storm Peaks, a few seconds west of K3, is Sparksocket Minefield. This little area is covered with land mines, each on the verge of detonating as soon as you take a step. This is the location of the Mine Sweeper achievement.
To do this correctly, you must be blown up by the land mines, while never “landing.” In this, the word “land” is misused. When you hit the ground, a timer starts and you cannot be on the ground for more than two seconds. This leaves you enough time to take one or two steps at most to get to the next closest mine.
First walk to the very center of the minefield where the goblin is. While facing outward run at one of the mines, (when they blow up they send you in the direction you ran from) and then cross your fingers. It will explode and hopefully you’ll land next to another mine, as that one explodes it sends you into the air again, and again hopefully to get the credit. If you get unlucky and don’t land on top of a mine, if you’re close enough, then walk a little bit to the next one.
There is also a chance that you will be more than a two second walk away from the closest mine. If this happens the timer hits two seconds and your explosion count gets reset to zero. If this happens, do NOT just run into the closest mine! Chances are that it is too far away from the group and it will explode you outward even more. If you do fail, find the safe path into the middle, and start again. Practice makes perfect.
Some things to look out for:
Health: The explosions only do 600-700 fire damage, but continued explosions will drop your health. Keep a health pot or if you’re a healer pop instant heals in the air time.
If you’re a pally pop fire resistance aura, this greatly mitigates the incoming damage.
Combat log: The amount of explosions is NOT the amount of times you’re in the air, it’s the amount of mines that explode! You could get three mines to explode at once, and send you in the air once, but that counts as three explosions, not one. The combat log will show you how many times a mine has gone off.
All in all, stay on your toes, watch your health, and in this case look as you leap. For getting every achievement is one way to set yourself outside the common crowd.
Next Time Part II: Rapid Defense

Cool. I’ll have to go try this one.
nice, i was always under the opinion that this was really hard and thus never attempted it. just a thought, does levitate work on it?, so could i land and then levitate to the next whilst still being classd as “in the air”?
levitate will of course work as intended, however is not advised.
Raknathal is “mostly” correct in saying that you have 2 sec from landing to get to the next mine. In actuality, you have 4 seconds from the time you detonate a mine to re-detonate another. Most times you will only be in the air for 2 sec, and therefore WILL have 2 sec upon landing to re-detonate. If you use levitate, your 4 sec will start counting and you will most likely fail the achievement.
I have found that the easiest way to do this is not to start in the middle, but to start at one edge and approach a mine from the opposite end(so that the mine on the edge actually blows you up into the middle of the minefield) and then its just as simple as moving very minutely each time bouncing from an edge to the middle and back and forth.
Best of luck!

I’ve completed this one luckily by being on an elite flying mount and flying 3ft above the ground and crossing into the area with the mines coming directly form K3. If you try to mount up to fly in the area with mines it will shoot you down but if you are already flying fast and low and reach the mine field you can catch probably 10 mines and make them explode by just flying over them. I’d say give it a shot. it worked for me
Hay love your stuff BUT I MISS THE PODCAST are you guys going to be doing this again or is it gone….
if you’re a paladin i’ve found that just poppin the bubble and running in will get you sweeper in a handful of seconds. i imagine the same works for priests with pain suppression. just a thought.
if you use the “loaned wings” mount you can simply fly over them to get the achivement. I havent tried it with a regular flying mount but the loaned mount works.
i wonder how they got the mines there without disturbing the snow? just joking of course. i did this on a druid without knowing it was going to give me ach. points. i almost fell out of my chair in laughter, because i was going from mine to mine for most of my hp, cause i couldnt figure out how to stop once it was started.
Back in 3.0.3, if you were a tailor, you could get on your flying carpet and just ride across the mines to get this achievement. They wouldn’t knock you off of it. I don’t know if they fixed it in 3.0.8 or 3.0.9 or if it still works. This may also work for other mounts that work as a vehicle such as the motorcycles or grand mammoths; that’s just speculation on my part.
Chpicker,
As of 3.0.8 vehicle mounts will be dismounted like normal mounts when a mine explodes.
I know about the bug, and while have no personal experience with it to confirm or deny, there are many high rated(green) wowhead posts about this showing that they have fixed the vehicle bug
I have heard but not tried that if you lag your comp to all hell its quite easy to do. E.G. open up 20 youtube videos open wow, your ping should b quite rediculous then you just run through the mine field, because of the lag you won’t set the mines off straight away (therefore you dont get dismounted or end up in the air) then when the lag catches up you have walked over like 15 or so mines and there is an easy achievement done.
Hellbound,
I would be careful with that method, and steer clear of it. Blizzard has labeled that method as an exploit and will either warn or temp ban people who do it. Messing with your internet connection in order to succeed at anything game-related violates the ToS. Do that method at your own risk, but I highly advise you not too.
this is also ridiculously hard to do unless you use a program like net limiter or something like that. anyone using dsl or above probably has too good a connection to do this…
James M,
Like I said, Practice makes perfect.
off topic, when is the next podcast? Or will there even be another?
