Death Knight Ghouls

New unholy Death Knights often complain that they have problems controlling their Ghoul and many find that they do not get the most out of it in terms of effectiveness. The following article aims to outline some of the tricks and macros that change your Ghoul from being a simple fire and forget DoT pet to an effective part of your character.
The first thing you should understand is how to maximize your Ghouls raw power. When you first summon your Ghoul it takes a snapshot of your current stats to determine its own; the two key attributes relevant to it being your stamina and strength. To get the best possible results from your Ghoul you will want to summon it when you are buffed and preferably with any strength procs such as your Rune of the Fallen Crusader active.
The best way to activate your procs before summoning your Ghoul is by using the target dummies located in most main cities. For PvP and Arena it can be far more important to have the most health possible on your Ghoul to ensure its survival so equipping a tanking set before summoning can give a significant increase to its health for a small reduction in its strength.
After you have your Ghoul summoned it’s important to understand how to control it. The best pet stance to choose for maximum control is passive and you will want to take both Leap and Gnaw off auto cast; this allows you to specify exactly who your Ghoul attacks as well as pull off several unique moves. The first thing you will want to create is a Ghoul recall macro as follows.
/cast [target=player] Leap
/petfollow
What this macro does is cause the Ghoul to instantly leap to you if in range and follow you; since you will be in passive stance your Ghoul will not run off again to engage another target. By doing this you can keep your Ghoul out of dangerous situations caused by him either chasing someone too far or to keep him out of the lava waves when fighting Sartharion.
The next macro you will want is an offensive one.
/cast Leap
/petattack
/cast Gnaw
What this macro will do is cause your Ghoul to leap to your current target and begin attacking it if it is not currently near it; Gnaw will not cast since it was not in range to begin with. If your Ghoul is currently attacking your target though and is next to it Leap will not cast since you will be too close however Gnaw will causing your Ghoul to stun the target for 3 seconds.
Between these two macros you have complete control over your Ghouls mobility and its stun. The final macro you will want is to get your ghoul to explode for a massive burst of damage.
/target pet
/cast Corpse Explosion
/targetlasttarget
This will command the Ghoul to explode starting its fast cast timer; do note however that if the Ghoul has just used an ability which activates its global cool down then it will not explode but the runic power cost and cool down period of Corpse Explosion will be used. Either time the ability carefully or quickly turn off auto casting on Claw before exploding your Ghoul.
By combining these macros together you are able to get the most of your Ghoul by precisely directing its movements and chaining together your Ghouls stun and explosion with several of your own large hits. With timing a combination of your Ghouls explode and a critical Scourge Strike hit can deal 8-10k damage instantly and reliably; truly dominating a target.

Nto a comment about the column, but rather about your mailer. For some reason, I am getting the same messages from your THREE times. Could you please check your mailer settings?
wow nice article. if i ever go unholy ill remember these macros
nice article, but take note that nearly all of your class guides that you have made recently are for DKs, and not all of us play DK. plz make some for others such as priests and warriors ^^
once again, DYS to the rescue! Thanks!
Having played a hunter and lock before, I have not had any issue controlling my pet.
However, thank you for the great information about when to summon your pet. I never even thought about that. Another macro that works well for pulls and PVP is
#show death grip
#showtooltip death grip
/cast death grip
/cast gnaw
Dear Dys staff,
longtime reader first time poster etc.
Anyway it was my understanding from extensive research and reading or multiple DK forums primarily EJ and it is my understanding that the controllable unholy version of the ghoul has stats calculated similiarly to hunter and warlock pets on the fly but not quite instantly. It is also my understanding that the unholy DK pets also scale with haste albeit poorly.

What need to be written with concern to Dk’s is the use of proper gear. I see way too many Newb Dk’s using pally gear with INT/spellpower. They should be using gear similar to their starter set………yes similar gear can be found in outlands. Another thing is alot of DK’s DO NOT know how to tank. DK’s have their own taunts, such as deathgrip, death/decay, and dark command. If used properly a DK can tank better than a warrior.
A tanking post would be nice. I have been tanking with my DK for a few weeks now, I have 540 def, but a little low on Hp, (21K). I personally feel I need a lot more help but, I have been told by almost every group that I have been one of the best DK tanks they have run with. That is very bad. Do I would love a DK tanking article so that we can DOMINATE the Tanking world!
Do the bonuses that the Ghoul gets from your buffs at the time of casting persist through multiple logins? Or do I need to re-summon each time I log in to get the effect of the buffs?
This comment does not have to deal with the DK. I just don’t know where to put it so here it goes. I bought the gold making guide to help tweak my AH skills. I am very pleased and have made over 7000 just doing it very much half assed. However some may not be aware of a “flaw” ,if you will, I have found. When WoTLK came out many vendor prices changed. But informant did not adjust the prices. Example being fel hide 64s and some copper droped to 12s and change. Luckely I only lost some 100g on vendor search. There is an addon out there to correct it and it is on curse. I think it is called datasnach or something like that. Anyway, this fixed the problem for me. Thanks again for the schooling.

Off topic, but do you know when your next podcast will be released?
Just wanted to point that out.
sorry for the inconvenience

sorry but u can use the ghoul macro to explode ur army of the dead too.
/target army of the dead ghoul (explodes one at a time )x army ghouls 1,2,3,4,5,6
just something i tried out on a target dumby, not shore but should help with pvp or pve and raids damage. If u summon them then let them dead before the fight u will have corpses in naxx 10-25 to use , then the tank can pull to that area. HAVE not tried it but think it will work in the 30 second cooldown time on ur ghoul or u can drop them before the boss pull where the healers stand so u can explode each corpse when the swarm comes its one fight i am focusing on (400 damage each one plus glyph ) on the bug boss but may work for others but only read about the corpse marco yesturday. So have not talk to any one about my idea so any input will help heaps on it . new DK dps unholy spec realm : aman’thul name: Lichlight one month play time as a DK i do 3.3k dps before i got the talent corpse explosion will let u know if it helps me
