Making Gold With Cooking

We’ve always said that your main toon needs to be a cook. Unfortunately not everyone listened to us. They probably wish they would have when the Winter’s Veil achievement became available and they hadn’t ever cooked anything but a little bread. Now they had just a few days to try to catch hundreds of fish, or grind hundreds of mobs for cooking mats.
Well stop that. Don’t NOT listen to us again. There are some great new high end buff foods in the game, but unless you are a cook, you probably will never be able to afford them. But for the cook, it means the same thing in the other direction – you can make really big gold from cooking if you put in the effort.
The other thing you have to know is that you simply MUST add fishing in order to do this. The high end fish are not any harder than the BC fish to get and that alone makes them easier than farming for worg haunches. Yes, we know leveling fishing is a pain. Yes, we know it is tedious to level cooking. But what if we also told you that you could maybe get 5 gold EACH for a cooked fish? Would that make it easier for you?
The big reason why these buff foods will be worth so much has to do with one thing: Northern Spices. Prices always boil down to supply and demand. In this case the way the game is currently structured means VERY limited supply for cooking mats. The stuff you make from it rivals alchemy potions so demand is also there. Low supply along with high demand equals very high prices.
The only way you can get Northern Spices is from doing the cooking dailies in Dalaran. Every time you complete the daily cooking quest you get a bag of spices and a Dalaran Cooking Award. One of the cooking quests gives 2 awards. The awards are used to purchase te new recipes OR you can spend 1 award for 10 Northern Spices.
The average person can easily complete the cooking quest every day. In order to get all of the available recipes you would have to do the dailies each day for about 50 days to buy every single new recipe available, although about 5 of them are pretty worthless so let’s just say 30 days.
You have a pretty good chance of getting 3-4 Northern Spices each day from the spice bags as well. So at the end of your first 30 days you have all the best recipes and 90 northern spices. That sounds good until you begin to look at how many Northern Spices you WANT to have.
Price check on Fenris shows Northern Spices going for around 7-10g EACH. If you can even find fish they are selling at about 2-4 gold a pop. Even things like worg haunches are commanding 1g each prices. And that’s on a server known for rabid undercutting. Ask anyone in the Dominate guild how fast prices can crash on us.
So if we are seeing prices like this on a server with a low price economy and a large market, it’s a pretty safe bet that prices are pretty much like this on most servers. So here is the deal. If the mats for Dragonfin Filet are selling for a minimum of 10g, it’s pretty easy to assume that you can sell the food for 15g each.
As a test, that’s exactly what we did. We bought 10 northern spices and a stack of Dragonfin for 195 gold. We made 10 Dragonfin Filets and went right back to the AH with a price of 25g each. We posted 5 singles and one stack of 5. Before we logged in again the next day, every single one had sold and there was 250 gold in the mailbox. Now just imagine if you had fished up the fish and gotten the spices on your own!
If you’ve been reading DYS for any length of time at all you know we’re not much into farming. But if there is a way to make it worth the TIME farming compared to working the AH then we consider it. In the case of cooking and fishing we may just have a winner. But here is what you need to do:
If you have level 70 alts, get their cooking leveled up and get them a port to Dalaran. Have each one of your alts do the cooking quest every day and buy Northern Spices with the rewards. Have your main get the best selling recipes from their rewards until you can make almost everything and then start buying Northern Spices.
In my case, I have 4 toons in the 70’s and an 80 main. So in the next 30 days, now that I have all the recipes I want, I can also collect about 1800 Northern Spices. Now you can see how this turns into BIG bucks. With 1800 Northern Spices and just 3 stacks of fish a day (about an hours work for the fish and maybe 30 minutes doing the dailies) I know for a fact I can make at least 10 gold each on every single one, and probably more like 20g each. That’s 600-1,200 gold a DAY for two hours worth of work. Since this is about what I expect to make every single day at the auction house for the same amount of time spent it’s definately something I’m going to do.
Of course, I spent a TON of time leveling alts, but you probably did too. Put them to good use and for heaven’s sake stop being a hardheaded numbskull and GO LEVEL COOKING AND FISHING! You never know when a trade skill will hop up and get really good really fast like this. Go get near a stove and Dominate!

Thanks for the Info!
I’ve been using the spices for myself and saving the rewards up, i didn’t realize that i could buy MORE spices with them. I also have a 72 toon that i’ll lvl up his cooking and get those dailies done too
Nice post!
awesome post, to bad I was one of the people that didn’t listen!
Going to grind it at my earliest… on both level 80’s
Man, this is some advice I really need to take. That goes for all my professions though. >.< Gotta level those alts…
I leveled cooking and fishing on my first character who is now my 4th most played. I vowed to never level fishing again after the first time, but broke that on Monday when i started leveling it on my main. Just over 1000 fish caught and at about 300, this is just the thing to keep me going strong
Another thing is really…Fishing and Cooking are given a lot of easy achievement points…so if you’re like me and have been playing for a long time and achievements are the new thing to keep your attention, its pretty necessary.
Thanks guys!
This was my plan before even going into Wrath.
My main is smithing and engineering so I needed a way to make gold for all the metal I couldn’t mine. It just conveniently turns out that fishing and cooking is a big moneymaker in Wrath. I have made thousands upon thousands of gold this way. Even non-spice fish are going for around 3g on my server. Got the crafting professions levelled up easily.
It helps being able to mindlessy fish for several hours like me. Grab a beer, put on some music and make some gold.
Can you explaine in more detail the Cooking dailies, and also say what level of cooking you need to do them, as well as what level fishing and what locations to fish at to get the right fish for the cooking recipes.
I partially leveled them from your post, but im wondering when I can start making golden fish sticks! (joke, not the real ones)
Great info!
For the daily cooking, you don’t even have to leave Dalaran to finish it except for the one where you have to pick up carrots in Crystalsong Forest. The rest require chilled meat, northern stew, or rhino dogs. The special item are for each daily are found around Dalaran. For example, one require 4 mushroom from the sewers in Dalaran and 4 chilled meat. Once you have them then you cook them over a fire, turn it in, then your done. Simple as that. I have my main save the cooking tokens to buy recipes and (I heard there is going to be an all fish only feast recipe in the next patch) my toon to buy northern spices with his tokens.
Oh, if I remember you have to be around 385 cooking and fishes are only for cooking from the recipes and are not part of the daily yet.
Finally mages can say they dominate farming mobs again. My 80 mage just farms meat so easily, takes about 10 secs to kill a herd of rhinos, mammoth, or shoveltusks. I just go in, arcane explosion (to group them up), frost nova, blizzard then pick up the loot. If I don’t have a skinner friend with me, there are always vultures waiting for me to leave then come skin the rest lol. Too bad I can’t farm worm meat like this so I usually just trade 2 stacks of meat for 1 stack of worm meat. In about 30 mins, I get over 300 meat, about 150g from vendor, and some greens. I usually do this at night so there isn’t alliance to bother me because I am in a pvp server and also barely or no competition from fellow horde.
Thanks for the heads up. I have a guild bank tab full of fish/meats/spices but for some reason didn’t think to check the ah to see what they were selling for. Though it’s a little redundant that they have different recipes that give the same well fed buff, it’s nice to have options when you go to farm the mats.
Fishing isn’t needed for the nice cooking bonus’s. I picked up cooking back in BC days when i was bored, took about 2 days after buying all the mats. Now i got it up now problem. But after looking at the recipes fishing isnt required for any of the buffs really. I play a shadow priest so i use the +46 spell power and +40 stam which is the tender shoveltusk flank food. When i go heals i think its mammoth meat that gives me like 20mp5 and 40spirit or somthing i dont member. than there is an attack power food from rhino. so without picking up fishing i picked up food for caster dps and melee dps also healers. There is one recipe though that looks helpful to people just beginning to raid, and that is the hit rating food.
I noticed on my server though Khaz Modan that the meat sells for alot rather quickly but due to the plethera of cooks the actual food is not a hot commodity
Woot i finely started to listen. I have 2 lvl 80’s and 2 in the 70’s range and none of them had cooking/fishing until about a week ago. So when Winter veil came I couldn’t get it the achievement. So i got off my ass and started lvling so i get get it next year (hope they have it). But now i know how to put all this time to good use and make some MAD MONEY. Thanks guys
I have to say iv been selling a lotof the high end cooking sine early december and have been makeing at lest 500g a day for about 30mins work , just to note that even the ones that dont need northern spices are still selling for about 3-4g each , also if anyone with fishing has been catching pygmy sucker fish dont vendor trash them high end alch needs sucker fish oil and that oil iv been selling for around 200g a stack
also fishing up pygmy sucker fish is useful for alchemists who use it for pygmy oil for the mp5 flask.
also if u drink 10 of the oils u become a voodoo gnome
Am I glad I leveled both cooking AND fishing! I didn’t even know there was a daily cooking quest in Dalaran until I read this article, thanks chaps! I have already managed to aquire 2 recipes so far and have modyfide my fishing and grinding to compliment them.
Like the post above, I too have saved all the spices for myself and am making gold on the ah with the excess food.
Thanks again guys, keep up the good work.
It’s crazy easy to make cash off of cooking. Figure out what the raiders like, cook it, sell it. Many many guilds raid every night. The AH is constantly revolving it’s food. It’s almost guaranteed that you will sell any raid-approved food.
On a high-pop server, anyways.
hi i suck at lvling fishing i cant even catch a fish
any sugestiong
and where are the quests in dala?
