Mutilate Vs. Combat Swords - Rogues in WotLK

Posted by Adamantite in Efficiency Tips, World of Warcraft, WotLK

Combat Specialization has always been a no brainer for any rogue who wanted to raid. On October 14, 2008 Patch 3.0 exploded onto Live Realms. When Blizzard finished putting the fires out on October 16th, Rogues came to find that Mutilate could be twisted into a viable raiding build. Now with 10 more talent points to spend, and a new DPS class to contend with, rogues have been forced to weigh their options to figure out how to dominate raid DPS in Wrath of the Lich King. The following is a head to head comparison between the two strongest raiding builds.

Mutilate

Sample Mutilate Build

Sample Mutilate Rotation: Mutilate (To 5 Combo Points), Slice and Dice, Mutilate (To 5 Combo Points), Rupture, Repeat.

Pros:

9% DPS Buff – Hunger For Blood (3% per stack, 9% total)

9% Critical Hit Chance – Master Poisoner (3% on Poisoned Targets) / Turn the Tables (6% on Party/Raid Member Dodge/Parry/Block)

6% Bonus Damage (Specials Only) – Find Weakness

Improved Expose Armor – Great for groups without a warrior tank (Expose Armor prevents warriors from gaining a great deal of threat with Sunder Armor)

More Combo Points per Energy Point – (60 Energy for 2 combo points = 30 Energy per combo point)

Cons:

Energy Inefficiency – 30 Energy every 30 seconds to maintain 3 Hunger For Blood stacks, Mutilate 60 Energy (High down time between attacks)

Limited Poison Usage – Limited to Wound, Crippling, Mind Numbing and Deadly Poisons. (No Instant or Anesthetic)

Poison Immunity – Bosses that are poison immune (Such as Curator in TBC) will cause drastic drop in DPS

Lack of Glyphs – Very Few Major Glyphs to support this spec

Combat Swords

Sample Combat Swords Build

Sample Combat Swords Rotation: Sinister Strike (To 5 Combo Points), Slice and Dice, Sinister Strike (To 5 Combo Points), Rupture, (Optional: Sinister Strike to 2-5 combo points, Eviscerate) Repeat.

Pros:

20% Critical Damage – Prey on the Weak (Only when Rogue’s total health percentage is higher than Target’s)

10% Energy Regeneration – Vitality (11 Energy per Second vs. 10 Energy per Second)

Burst Damage – Blade Flurry (20% Attack Speed) and Adrenaline Rush (100% Bonus Energy Regeneration) increase DPS drastically during some boss’s vulnerable periods

5% Extra Attack Proc – Every attack has a chance to increase your DPS by striking a second time

Improved Slice and Dice – Increases Slice and Dice duration by 50% giving time for another step in DPS rotation

Cons:

Lower Critical Hit Rate – Stacking attack power over agility and the lack of some critical hit talents leads to a lower critical rate.

Less Combo Points per Energy Point – Sinister strike gives 1 combo point per 40 energy

Conclusion:

While both specializations show great promise Combat Swords has a slight edge over Mutilate. While doing less damage per point of energy, Combat Swords makes up for it with superior “White” damage from auto attacks. Superior energy regeneration and another step in rotation can really push Combat past Mutilate’s high damage and insane critical hit rate. Both tend to be very gear dependant but at a similar gear level we suggest Combat Swords to dominate the DPS charts.

Blood Spec Death Knight Build

Posted by Exxer in General Tips

Greetings, denizens of domination, your resident Death Knight is here to discuss with you some beginning tips and tricks for all of you bloodthirsty (pun intended) DK’s.

So, say you’ve hit 80, or are close, and are despairing because you have no idea how to spec for raiding and taking down Arthas and the rest of his crew. Now this article is dedicated to those of you who love to get down and dirty, tear your opponent’s heart out, show it to them and start munching on it; it spewing the last remnants of its lifeblood onto… Well, you get the point. So here is the skinny on Blood spec:

Speccing:

Now, there are many choices out there for talents in terms of DPS, but for the sake of the beginners out there, we’ll start by just advising a general cookie-cutter (aka DELICIOUS) build.

Blood Spec for Death Knights = 51/13/7:

Now this is just a general, physical, dps focused build, which offers some mild buffs to your raid (through Abomination’s Might and Mark of Blood) and a whole boatload of pain to whatever mob is unfortunate enough to step in front of your beatstick.  Now there is some leeway with this build, but this is my personal favorite for balance. Here are some talents you can consider changing up, for personal taste.

Blood Aura/Rune Tap vs. Bloodworms: Now, these three points should be carefully considered, taking into account what you find yourself doing most often. For those who solo quite a bit more on the side, you may want to consider taking Bloodworms, a 9% proc for 4-5 worms that deal 50 base damage on a 2.0 speed attack which also heal for about 80-100 per worm per hit.

Now, I chose to go the Rune Tap/Blood Aura route, because the 2% heal through damage goes for your entire raid, and Rune Tap is used when taking random damage.  You can also get a scribe to make you a glyph which makes the Rune Tap heal also apply to your entire raid.  Considering the sheer number of DK’s out there competing for raid spots, any little thing that can make you a more popular death knight among millions is a good thing.

Toughness (Frost) vs. Glacier Rot/Imp. Icy Touch: At first, Toughness may seem like a talent reserved for those mindless brutes taking the brunt of your raid’s damage to the dome (Concussions much DK Tanks?), but combined with Blade Barrier, it looks appealing. With a general heroic-entry set of blue gear, I have around 11000 armor, which translates into just about 305 extra attack power.  15 percent extra armor may seem like a great thing, but going through the math, at this point, you only gain a little bit less than 40 attack power for five points. Now, since it seems to scale nicely, it COULD be a consideration as gear levels increase, but I find that slowing mob attack speed down helps the tank, and the extra damage on Icy Touch is killer for your rotation.  (More on this later)

Now in general, this is a very high-dps build with some nice kick added to it, focused on the second dps rotation, where you have 2 extra death runes to be able to execute 4 Heart Strikes. But simply put, this build is absolutely Dominating for PVE.  Next lesson, we’ll cover this build more in-depth, with stat priority, rotation, and all of that good stuff you theorycrafters will drool over. That installment is coming soon, provided I can interrupt the constant rending of souls taking place here on Fenris to get you the latest in DK news.  So until next time, this is Dr. DK signing off.

Profession Buffs

Posted by Gavin in General Tips, Trade Skills, World of Warcraft

With the advent of Wrath of the Lich King, so many things have changed that it’s hard to know where to start.  But since we’ve been talking a lot about professions lately it makes sense to start there.  There are some cool new buffs you can get from several of the professions, so let’s give you a closer look at each one.

Engineering:

This one works like the Ultrasafe Transporter: Gadgetzan, except that it can transport your entire group and not just the engineer.  However, just like the not so ultra-safe transporter, it can also leave you merely near Gadgetzan about 1000 feet in the air.  This is not such a great thing if your entire raid team wipes on the deal and has to spend 150 gold on the repair bill.

Jewelcrafting:

The Grand Master Jewelcrafter gets a nice ability to get gem cut procs from green quality gems.  These perfect cuts have slightly higher stats than the regular versions and should fetch a much higher price at the AH.  It’s hard to tell right now what the proc rate is for this, but reasonable reports suggest it’s between 25% all the way up to 45% of every cut you do will be perfect.  This ability is learned from a quest, and only applies to green quality gems and not rare or epic cuts.

Tailoring:

Can be trained at the tailoring trainers for 5g.  It is pretty straightforward - extra cloth appears for the tailor.  Even if someone else loots the mob and gets a piece or two of cloth, the tailor will be able to loot an extra piece from time to time.  Not a huge help, but can get you a few extra bolts during your run to 80.

Alchemy:

Alchemists can train this skill at level 50, which is very nice.  This skill doubles the duration of all potions, flasks and elixirs; and that’s not all.   This skill also increases the effects of alchemy items when you use them.  For instance; Flask of Relentless Assault normally gives +120 attack power, but a mixologist recieves +180 ap for the same flask - a 50% increase.  These effect increases range from 10% to 50%, and every little bit helps in raids.  This can give alchemists a big boost.

Skinning:

Even though skinning may not make you much cash, it will certainly help you get more critical strikes.  This is especially handy for those classes which would normally take the skinning/leatherworking combo such as druids and rogues.  You can see that at rank 6 it improves cs by 25 points.  Depending on how people interpret the formulas for translating rating points into crit chance this is somewhere between .6% and 1% cs chance at level 80.  This will be an even bigger boost at lower levels, but since it also applies to spell power, it’s just another little buff for every class.  It may be better for leveling than an end-game benefit like mixology could be.

Herbalism:

For those with a green thumb, you also get a cool heal over time spell in lifeblood.  2000 health ticks in just 5 seconds is a save-your-bacon kind of thing that actually works really well.  Warriors especially dig this one when going solo, and it can make the difference in a tough or close fight.  Since herbalism can be a great gold-maker as well, lifeblood is well worth taking this profession.

Mining:

Our last entry; the miner gets a great buff for prot classes.  Mining is a cash cow, and toughness is a nice lift to hp - warriors take notice.  Any prot spec can make great use of toughness, but almost anyone could benefit from it as well.  For our money, mixology, lifeblood and toughness are simply awesome.

So if you have been on the fence about professions at all, these might help you choose a side.  We’ve been hyping mining and herbalism for making more gold, and the buffs you will get from them are no slouch either.  So get out there, get to mixing, get to digging, just get to work and get to Dominating!

Gavin Garrett’s 1-80 In-Game Leveling Guide

Posted by Lawbringer in Faster Leveling, Gold Farming, World of Warcraft, WotLK

WotLK goes live on November 13th and a lot of our subscribers who have been paying attention to our advice have been waiting for this post for weeks.

We’ve been leveling in the beta from the very beginning, and we know it backwards and forwards now.  We’ve run through virtually every quest in Northrend, and tested and re-tested routes and completion order many times in the process.

We’ve been telling you for a while that WotLK is almost like a whole new game.  I’ve spent the last four years playing this game, and we’ve never seen a content expansion like this, the Burning Crusade doesn’t even come close. Northrend is massive, and the leap in the amount of experience you need to go from one level to another is monstrous.  With thousands of new quests, and the new way Blizz designed the quest hubs, it can be mind-boggling if you don’t know what to do.

I know how to level fast, so fast that I now hold the world record time from 1-70, and I want to give all of our readers the same paths I took all the way to level 80 so you can be prepared ahead of time.  Leveling to 80 is much harder than anything we’ve ever done solo, bar none.

When I sat down to write this guide, I didn’t want just another also-ran guide like all of the other ones out there.  Leveling guides are everywhere and they just aren’t that good for a number of reasons.  How can you even follow a guide that has you picking up more than 25 quests at a time?  There is one very popular guide that does that more than once - and that is way below our standards at DYS.

So we put our heads together and our noses to the grindstone, and after more than 6 months and hundreds of hours of work, we have the very best leveling guide you will ever see.  Not only that, it works right in the game!  Gavin Garrett’s in-game leveling guide mod shows you exactly what to do, where to do it, and guides your through the exact same paths Gavin himself used so you can squeeze every last second out of your played time all the way to 80.

Here Are A Few Of The Things You Get In Gavin Garrett’s Leveling Guide:
·

  • In-Game Mod - This makes the guide worth more than the price all by itself.  You’ll never have to alt-tab to look at some other page or print out a guide again.
  • Floating Way-point Arrow - The arrow points you to the precise location you need to go next.  You never have to run around looking for a single mob or NPC ever again.
  • Back Doors  - I did every quest so many times that I can show you paths and ways to get to many locations that will help you avoid dozens of mobs so you can grab the quest item or named mob in record time.
  • Fastest Quest Order - It’s one thing to do a guide with a bunch of quests, but there has never been a guide that can lead you through hundreds of quests in the most efficient order possible.
  • Traveling Strategies - I’ve even included my unique hearthstone points so that you can cut down on a ton of travel time.  This one set of things can shave hours off your time to 80.
  • Class Quests - The guide even ‘reads’ your toon class and rockets you through every class quest you really need to do, and skips the ones you don’t
  • Quest Tips and Tricks - Every single step has the very best tips I use to complete each quest in record time.  Just mouseover the step to see what I do to Dominate every single one.
  • All The Way To 80 - As bad as some of the other guides are when it comes to old content just to 70 - can you really believe that they will be worth anything for the new 70-80 content?  Gavin’s Leveling guide will take you from 70-80 in the same Dominating way it took you from 1-70.

This beauty is that this is not just a leveling guide; It’s an in-game personal tutorial that will guide you all the way through the game so you can completely Dominate in /played time.  With this guide by your side, it won’t matter how many other people on your server are vying for the fastest time to 80 – you’ll constantly be one step ahead of them.

Gavin’s Guide Shows You:

  • Every quest you should accept, and every one you shouldn’t; you will never waste time on low drop rates again.
  • When to run to a new zone and ditch the last few things in your current zone.  Don’t spend four hours finishing up a zone when you can get more experience in one hour by moving on.
  • How to navigate the enormous Northrend zones.  Northrend zones are massive, Gavin’s guide will have you clearing them in record time with no wasted traveling.
  • How to beat the hardest quests in WotLK.  I’ll show you back-doors, hard-to-find quest hubs, and strategies for soloing 2 player quests that will get you even more xp per hour and some awesome blue quest reward items to rocket you past the competition.

I know there are lots of other leveling guides out there. I’ve already seen most of them and you know what? They suck. They use poor traveling routes, spend too much time in the wrong zones, waste time on bad quests and are just flat out poorly written, and NONE of them are faster. We have a saying here at the DYS office – “you can do the best you can, or you can be the best there is.” My leveling Guide is the best there is…

Guaranteed
I’m so positive that you’ll absolutely LOVE this guide that I’m willing to guarantee it. Try my in-game leveling Guide out for a full 30 days. If you’re not happy with the guide, just email us here at DYS and I’ll happily give you a full refund.

Free Updates
Even though we played the Beta diligently, there will be some changes with coming patches.  The Beta was still incredibly buggy when it finally closed and as a result we may add some things when they are proven to work well so we’ll update the Guide regularly. You’ll receive each of these updates completely free of charge.

Instant Download
My Inscription Guide is a downloadable mod file - you’ll have it on your hard drive in under 2 minutes.

Here’s the bottom line. This guide is your step-by-step battle plan for dominating your server when it comes to leveling. Take a look at all the comments on this post from people who bought our Inscription guide and used it.

Rob Writes:

Gavin I Would Like to thank you guys for the excellent guide and the advice given around the AH. . .and am waiting expectantly for the more general gold making guide and levelling guide!!!

Sarah Wrote:

Gavin, i just got done reading your inscription guide and ive never paid for a guide for warcraft before but i have to say, this is awesome!!!!! Thanks for everything you do!

Daryl Says:

Hey Gavin, I just bought the Guide and I tell you this thing must have taken you forever! I hope you don’t have another job because I don’t think there is ANY way for you to get any sleep otherwise. I appriciate all the hard work.

Theos Wrote:

Without a doubt this guide is essential! In addition to Gavin’s and Lawbringer’s words of wisdom I have been doing some additonal research on my own (referance inscription) and the info they put out today isn’t common knowledge on the street at all. Its packed with all kinds of little gems of info that will ensure you maximize your profits. Without it you might make some serious errors come patch-day! This is the most if not the ONLY comprehensive guide out there. On a scale of 1 to 10 this is a definitive 10! Worth every penny!

“Nobody” Commented:

This guide is nothing short of amazing. It consists of where you need to train, what to train, where to pick herbs, and what/how to sell for the best profits. It may be really in-depth, but that is because these guys have put together every little detail you need to know and more. I can’t imagine the time spent on this.

Koyote Said:

Just got the guide and I’m blown away by the step by step details. Also, great for planning what herbs I need. I had a lot of misconceptions based on other guides, such as the WoW forums etc…I found that I overstocked herbs on some and had at least one type of pigment that I didn’t have enough of. Huge surprise as I thought for sure I had enough. I would have been caught out paying through the nose to stock up on that ink to level further. Time to hit the farming again before patch to get what I need. Great guide, would recommend to anyone not on Dath’Remar (that’s the server I am going to dominate lol). 2 Thumbs up on $7 well spent. Thanks.

I have been subscribed to your articles for months now, and I have always found that they come very handy. Im Ashamed to admit that i used to think you were a scammer, it wasnt untill you recently posted this article that I decided to test drive your guides. I was preparing myself for a scam, untill i received and read your Inscription leveling guide. And I never thought i would actually be replying with good comments about it, I seriously had the impression that you wrote all of these comments about your guide to yourself to make you look more legit. But this has got to be the best guide i have ever seen, and i am very impressed, i thought i was prepared for inscription bit i was wrong, not untill this guide have i really been ready for inscription. I am also much more confident on using the AH. To anyone that is considering buying this guide, i highly reccomend it. It is only foolish to miss this oppurtunity, this window into lots of gold. And gavin and his team have showed us how to take full advantage of it. Thank you so much.

I found the guide I purchased to be invaluable really. Saved me a lot of time (and it took a good 3 hours to go from 1-368 and I had all the herbs in stock)  The sweet spot herbs as predicted by DYS where indeed the ones. Countless people in trade chat WTB Fadeleaf/Khadgars/Gold Thorn.  I chuckled to myself as I looked at my lovely 50 or so stacks (double what i originally had saved before reading the guide)  Total from all Glyph sales after about 60 hours is about 8k and i still have about half of my herbs left.

There is simply no serious competition for a Gavin Garrett Guide - how many other guys hold the World leveling record? Only one.  I went out there and blew them all away, and now it’s your turn to follow me all the way to 80.  No other guide makes it this smooth and easy.  And you don’t have to be a pro.  Even someone with limited experience and below average gear will be able to level faster than almost everyone else because you will know exactly where to go and what to do in the very best order to run off and leave even the T6 guys - IF you let Gavin show you the way.

Even though my leveling Guide will be the one mod you will never want to live without, we’re not charging a fortune for it. We are going to make the same deal for all of our DYS readers just like we did for the Inscription Guide.

You can get Gavin Garrett’s 1-80 Leveling Guide right now for only Half Price.  A FULL 50% off - only for DYS readers! The regular price for this can’t-do-without guide is $47.  But for the next few days, you can get the best leveling guide available at any price for just $23.50.  Remember, that price includes free updates, and your purchase is covered by our 30-day, 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Go read the reviews below this post - our customers LOVE our guides, and there’s a reason… they’re the best available.

Profession Racial Bonuses

Posted by Gavin in Faster Leveling, General Tips, World of Warcraft

As you get ready to enter WotLK, you may find yourself looking to max out a profession to 375 to make sure that you are going to get in on the hot new recipes and items you can make.  We wanted to give you a little info to snack on that may make choosing a profession or a toon for each profession a little easier if you’ve ever wondered about it.

When it comes to maxing out a profession, you definitely want to try to match professions to a racial bonus if that is possible.  The primary reason for this is that it will make the upper levels of each proficiency range quite a bit easier.  You see,  all recipes have the same skill point proc rate based on a static table. Since  Engineering is going to be a hot profession for WotLK for the motorcycle mounts, let’s look at an example from that profession so you can see what we really mean.

For everyone but Gnomes, the recipe for Felsteel Stabilizer would be orange at 340, always granting a skill-up.  At level 350 it goes yellow, meaning probably a skill up, let’s assume at least 50%.  At level 360 it goes green meaning hang on to your wallet, it’s going to be expensive.  As much as it is possible, you want to only create items that are orange, and the first few skill-ups in yellow.  Just common sense there, unless there is a green recipe with really cheap mats compared to the orange recipes you have.

I know this is all a little “old hat” for some of you, but here’s how the racial bonus helps the gnome at this level.  A gnome making Felsteel Stabilizers will be able to stay in the orange guaranteed skill up range with this item until skill level 365, and then it will remain yellow up to 375 before it goes green.  While every other race is spending crazy gold making other things, the gnome will be able to make this much lower level recipe with more inexpensive mats or at least easier to farm considering Fel iron isn’t all that hard to mine in Hellfire Peninsula.

A gnome can basically make this one recipe all the way to the profession cap while the rest of us are trying to make a bunch of flying machines or other nonsense to hit 375.  It can literally save you hundreds of gold, if not a thousand or more depending on the economy for the mats you need on your server.

So if you are considering Engineering, and have a gnome, then it’s a no-brainer if you are not capped yet.  The same holds true with Jewelcrafting and Dranei, and Enchanting with Blood Elves.  Tauren get an Herbalism boost, but it’s not nearly as useful with a gathering profession as it is on a production profession.

Ally finally get a serious advantage over horde as well in this category with two races holding a bonus to two of the most difficult to level and expensive professions in the game.  If you use enchanting like we do and DE tons of things to sell the mats, then enchanting isn’t nearly as tough as either of the other two.

With the motorcycle wanting frenzy about to start, you might want to consider adding engineering to your gnome and get it leveled up quick.  Sure, you can do it with any race, but a gnome just makes it that much easier to Domainte.
