Scourge Invasion Tips For 70’s
Posted on October 27th, 2008 by Gavin under Efficiency Tips, General Tips, World of WarcraftThe scourge invasion has been going on for several days, and will be around a few more. So we wanted to do a quick post so that everyone will know how we Dominate the invasion events at the ziggurat spawn locations. This part of the zombie invasion world event is primarily for groups at level 70, but if you are in the 50’s it’s worth it just to go watch the insanity a time or two while it lasts.
If you are level 70; visit the Argent folks at the tents in any major city, but you’ll probably want to find the one in Undercity or Iron Forge since it makes the next part a bit easier to get to. Accept the quest they give and go to Light’s Hope Chapel in Eastern Plaguelands. There will be several quests available to you there. Pick them all up and be ready to get to work.
Every few hours, the world map begin to show a purple skull in several zones on Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms. The skulls mark zones in which a scourge necropolis (or more) has appeared and is feeding a necrotic crystal. There will be a big pack of mobs surrounding each crystal. As you kill the mobs, it damages the crystal. As you can see above, the scene at the crystals is nothing short of only slightly organized chaos.
By the time the crystals are about to die there are normally several groups of players slaughtering mobs and competing to be the first to tag one of the rares that will spawn as well as the shadows of doom that appear when the crystal is destroyed. The rares always drop a level 70 elite gear item from the undead slayer’s set for each armor type. The shadows also have a chance to drop 30 necrotic runes, which can be turned in for the last two pieces of the set at Light’s Hope in EPL.
Our Dominating technique is to take a full group to a zone under attack and camp a crystal location. One group member keeps an eye out for the rare spawn, and tags them as soon as they appear. This will ensure you almost always get at least two epics for the group at every crystal you camp. But you have to be fast with an instant cast spell considering the crowds that will be there most of the time.
Next, as soon as the crystal goes down, spam your AOE attacks to tag the shadows. If you are quick, you can nab two of those as well. with three zones on each continent, and at least three crystal locations in each zone - with a little quick movement we have been able to grab 20 epics in less than an hour. If you bring an enchanter along, you can DE the redundant drops and get a stack of 10-12 void crystals as well. Not bad for an hour’s work.
If someone trying to solo one of the rares or elite shadows dies, just tap it and the loot is yours (you’ll have to finish it off of course). If some jerk is spamming AOE spells and pulls all the spawns, including the one you summoned, you will have to try to pull aggro from them and lead the mob away until their health resets. If you can manage this, you can get your tag back. You spent runes on the mob, do whatever it takes to get the loot.
But the best way to stock up on plenty of epic drops and runes is to hit some of the least populated locations. Our favorites are in Azshara and Winterspring. In Azshara, head to the three crystals on the beach. Most folks will be at the one closest to the flight paths in the western part of the zone, leaving you with three locations to watch for rare spawns. Then when the western crystal goes down, they will all come help your team kill the remaining low level mobs and spawn the shadows.
But the best place is Winterspring. For some odd reason, the two crystals in the northern part of the zone just south of frost saber rock are almost always left alone until every other zone is cleared. We have been there three days in a row and gotten every single rare spawn.
You might also check the Tanaris crystals, as it seems that that zone takes the longest to get cleared, although we haven’t tested it yet because it’s so far out of the way. But that may be the reason no one else seems to be going there as well, leaving it wide open for you to Dominate.

A quick reminder. If you are high enough rep you can port to the caverns of time from World’s End Tavern in Shattrath. If you have a warlock in the group your team can be one of the first on the ground while everyone else spends 10 minutes flying down.
In Azura skip the first crystal spawn just down the road from the flightpath. It seems this one is well over camped as it is the closest to the flightpath. Instead head down to the beach. There are 3 or 4 crystal spawns and you and your team can dominate while everyone at the first node attempts to fight for spawns for the next 15 minutes.
Last but not least if you are working on those achievements there is a feat of strength achievement for purchasing a Argent Dawn tabard during the invasion. You will have to complete the quests from light’s hope chapel first. It’s only 8 necrotic runes so an easy grab for a little bragging rights.
Our Tanaris has been Bugged which has forced people to eb squshed into closer ones but seriosuly if You can make the effort to go the extra 10 mins journey or whateveer u can make a ridicualous amount. on my first Char it took ages before I could even tag the normal mobs sicne there were so amny. Then I went to Winterspringand that All changed. I went and cleared a spawn point on my own which fetched ina riculous number fo runes then i called upon sum guildies adn they came and we killed the three spawns. I also killed a few “rare” mobs whilst clearing my point and i discovered sumthing interesting. Each Spawn point gets a Rare Spawn every 1-10 mins sometimes within just 1 min. These drop One Epic Gear and 2-3 runes. At this point I stopped playign this char who had been upgraded from blue green gear to entirely epic gear in 1hr. I went on my epic geared rogue and i repeated this in winterspring which againw as empty. However I only killed the mobs around the RAres and i moved between 4 spawn points. I killed 12 rare Mobs and enough of the normal mobs to be able to get the runes adn then I amanged to dual-kill a shadow of doom with my pally friend. In Total I managed to hook in 80 Runes. 12 Epics which i sold but which DE could have made a mint. I also earnt few gold in money picked up from mobs. It was awesome. I did i this again in 1hr. THIS IS A MAJOR OPPORTUNITY. all 70s who need the gear should eb straight over there. Anyone who DEs for money Should go over there and anyone who wants to haeva laugh should also go over. ITS NICE>!
o YAY for the first post
i can see anyway
i like going to the tanaris ones. if you use the lady in worlds end tavern to transport you to caverns of time its not that far out of the way. and ive only seen about 10 people max at each crystal. best way to tap them is either a pally with consecrate, mage with blizzard, hunter with a trap or arrow volley. pallys seem to dominate it though. also it take 8 Necrotic Runes to turn one of the guys into a shadow of doom.
Tanaris is probably th eleast out of the way. From Shatt City, get ported to the CoT and it is practically right outside in front of you. You need the correct rep woth the keepers, but if you are dominating…you should be there at least?
Hmmmm… I’m gonna have to take a stab at this too
In future if you could avoid recommending to people how to steal someones tagged mob it would be appreciated, I don’t know about you but if someone did that to me I would be slighty pissed off. I know this site may be called dominate your server, but that’s no reason to be a jerk about it.
OMG quit being such a carebear Buger!
This game is called world of WARcraft, not world of HUGcraft!
If you’re playing horde, and you can steal a needed mob from an alliance toon, are you telling me you wouldn’t??? He sure as hell would do it to you if he had a chance!
Quit being a pansy - pansy’s don’t dominate… they just whine about people who do!
Actually, we “alliance” make sure not to get the first hit if a hordie is tagging it…we help them down there mobs…least on my server. But then, most the hordies do the same for us ….on my server. We have a harder time with our own faction stealing tags n loot. Not a good practice in my book. Domination, doesn’t mean that you can’t show others how to be a good sport. Do you always pawn in bg’s? Nope. Do you always score the drop? Nope. Kinda why they make guilds, so you can work together for a common goal. After the advise given, am glad I didn’t jump servers as I had originally considered doing.
OK look - we’ve gotten some bad responses about this post, so let me expand on the situation.
On Fenris there are CROWDS at every spawn point. We are not recommending griefing just to be a tool and get ALL the loot. That is not the point and we could have stated it better.
In order to get a single drop, we are forced to use the aggro pull away from the ret pallies who spam consecration around the crystal. Otherwise, you can spend 2 hours hitting every crystal spawn and never tap a shadow or elite.
If there are a limited number of folks at the spawns, then by all means we just take one or two, it’s enough. But, if there is a complete mass of groups, you are simply forced to use other tactics in order to even have a shot at anything.
And this IS about working together for a common goal. The goal is to get something for your effort. I guess I’m glad you didn’t join us as well if that means standing around for three days hoping someone will let you just have a drop or two. We play to win. We didn’t /spit or /lol at anyone, we just did what it took to get our guild mates gear - period. We are not in this to help everyone on the server, especially the opposing faction that we will face in the BG’s get geared up.
We didn’t score every drop, but we made sure to get at least ONE drop at every location. With 7 drops, that means that every group also got one. We didn’t grab the whole pot, we just made sure we got a bowl.
Ok. Look. I’m all for pvp ganking and dissing the opposing faction, but Blizzard has done a pretty good job of making kill stealing not be such a large problem in WoW as it was in other past games like EQ.
Considering this, I find it disappointing that DYS would stoop to pointing out ways to steal a mob that someone else had to PAY runes which they had to farm to summon. Especially since you guys were rather adamant about how your new guild wouldn’t accept exactly the kind of people that would do this. It’s just not a very classy move.
An undead mage did this to me the other day, and yeah, I was kinda miffed. Of course, I didn’t whine about it, I just went right back in and summoned another one and made sure to out DPS him, then I just laughed it off. He laughed back. Whatever.
I’m just saying, if you’re gonna use the anti Alliance/Horde argument, at least show some class and some style. Kill stealing is neither classy or stylish.
Just my two cents.
I have updated the post to reflect more precisely our actual situation and intent. What was happening is that WE were spending 16 runes to spawn two mobs and having OUR mobs taken by all those “honorable” and “classy” and “stylish” alliance AND other horde groups in the area.
The Horde toons are bad about using Hurricane at the crystal. So when faced with the SITUATION of having two Ret pallies and a Drood blasting away with AOE, you can move on to the next crystal, just to have them all show up as the thing goes down, or you can get what you payed for and make sure you get some loot out of your runes.
The real point is that it was Dominate that was being stolen from. We used the techniques above to level the playing field in those situations. At crystal locations that were not busy, we would use our 16 runes, spawn two and leave everything else to the other folks around.
Yea.. don’t go getting all flustered about less than courteous tactics being promoted for this event. It’s a one time event so a lot of other people on your server will be doing whatever it takes to get the epic gear and all the runes they can stuff their bags with. If you’re going to sit around and not be somewhat aggressive about tagging mobs to get loot when there are other people swarming the same stone… then why are you there? If you don’t want to be competitive then you’re going to have to go when it’s a dead time on your server and most people aren’t online. That’s the only time when you won’t have to work too hard to get what you’re there for.
for those wondering, it is approximately every 2-4 hours they spawn
You guys really do a nice job, I have said this before but I really I mean it. I decided a couple of weeks back to run a mage up to join my other 70’s and have only been annoyed by the zombies, I have even asked around about the what the deal is with them “can we get loot off them somehow” all I got was no there just a pain in the ass (how nobody in a T5 guild knew this was going on is beyond me but anyway). Well now I know different thanks to you and will be joining in the fun, thanks much and keep it up!
Here’s something interesting:
1) As a mage, I run around and pick up 9-13 mobs (any more and my aoe’s will cap, and it doesn’t do enough damage). and then kill them all with Blizzard (3/3 improved blizzard, 0/3 frostbite. If you take shatter and Fingers of Frost your good to go, since blizzard crits now). Occasionally, I’ll see an item called a “haunted momento” (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=40110), which is a somewhat rare drop considering it will only drop during this event.
A couple months, or a year from now, and vanity collectors will be paying top price for this little beast. Having it in your inventory causes a wraith to follow you around! The wraith can’t be targeted, but it looks cool, and sometimes it whispers threats to you! It’s not soulbound, but they are unique so make use of your mailbox alts if your farming up a supply.
Is this only worth attempting as a level 70 or would a fairly geared level 68/69 feral druid manage?
I seemed to do quite well against the normal mobs as a lvl 67 ret pally. Even though they are 2-3 lvl’s higher than me, they hit like pansies. The normal mobs should be perfectly doable at 66+, but you’ll need a group to kill the shadows unless you’re exceptionally well geared. I don’t know how strong the rares are, whenever they spawn there’s 10 people or more with less latency than me trying to hit them too >.< I would highly recommend this though…. the items are completely easy mode to get for epics.
got to say your guild will proably be one of the best…with one exception your all evil horde… well as an alliance player I would have have loved to been part of it will money baggins… oh well.. i hope you all kick butt and take no names…
Ok, this event is pretty cool.
I took the advice in the post and headed to Winterspring first and managed to tag one of the rares even though there was a handful of people there. Got some nice epic leather leggings so I kept farming away, getting lots of runes. I also tried out Tanaris and managed to tag a Shadow that someone else was tanking (I can’t solo them though I tried). 3 epic leggings later (none of which were useful to my hunter) I grouped up with a couple friends in Winterspring again and it was a ghost town there.. literally lol. Had spawning points all to ourselves and finally got epic leggings for all. I also got about 90 runes just tonight and went back to LHC and got 2 more pieces of the set as well as the tabard and the Argent War Horn which I think everyone has to at least see because it is just so funny! I plan on going back tomorrow night to get enough runes for the rest of the trinkets just to have since this is a one time deal.
Also, for those of you wondering about the drops. There is an epic 4 piece set for each armor type with set bonuses that increase your damage done when fighting undead. The leggings and, very rarely it seems, the chestpiece drops from the rare spawns around the crystals. The shoulders and gloves may be purchased from the Argent Quartermaster at LHC for 15 runes each. These runes have a very high droprate, I’d say around 50% or so and are used for a quest, to summon elites, and to purchase these items. The elites drop 30 runes each it seems which is pretty nice. Also, I got about 3 or 4 different letter drops that each started a quest with a simple turn in worth about 3g. Also, as mentioned above, a Haunted Memento drops occationally so you can have one of those creepy ghouls following you around and that’s about all it does. As far as a money making opportunity, I wouldn’t really say it’s that great other than the void crystals.
So all of you 70s standing around rotting your brains on trade chat need to get out there and kill some scourge for some shweet loot!
This cool, got a full plate set in about 3 hours. Thanks for the tip! Does anyone know how good this epic gear is?
As it turns out, it does cost 8 necrotic runes to summon a shadow. As it also turns out, each shadow drops 30 runes! If you manage to tag a bunch of shadows, your good to go on runes.
Good tips on the tags. I have a pally alt who now has some pretty nice gear for when I want to bash around on him rather then my main.
P.S.
Where do you go to get reviewed by you guys? The link takes you nowhere…
Just fyi, for those of you who haven’t seen any of the chestpieces yet, I confirmed tonight that they drop from the elite Shadows but I couldn’t really say what the droprate is since I’ve only killed a few so far. I’ve gotten a couple stacks of void crystals off the rares and from vendor epics with my epic runes, kinda nice
…er… extra* runes…
yall suck! jk, nerds.
I’ve also killed a few of the elites, and gotten nothing but 30 runes, so epic items don’t always drop.
A pally or other AEO can really dominate with these guys. I can round up 20 or so at a time and kill them easily with my holy speced pally. Granted my repair bills are high but I can make 80 runes in one run without tagging an elite. And I usually get at least 1 silver rare spawn that always drops an epic. My last run got me 83 runes and 2 epic drops.
I find that the best time to farm rares is LATE night like from Midnight till 6am most of the ppl have gone to bed and all the crystals are just sitting there spawning rares. The best place i find is the Blasted lands because you can hit all 6 of the spawns in under 5mins they are all that close. so you just run around and check for rares, tag and bag. Totally soloable. If your an enchantor its a easy way to stock up on Epic shards also.
