Mods And 3.0 – ACK
Posted on October 16th, 2008 by Lawbringer under General TipsWith the hundreds of new developments we’re all swamped with concerning the patch it’s a little tough to know where to start.
Inscription is a bit of a mess on about half the servers. Fortunately there is always a way to make a good profit and you just go where the money is. On Fenris the competition is just silly (50 pages of glyphs as I write this), but we just went back to selling herbs to all the alchemists and scribes and are making a killing there. Cornered the market for minor glyphs and that works well. Watching prices rise today now for majors as the herbs dry up, so it’s just a matter of staying on top of things as the market moves.
The servers were an even bigger mess. So much for leveling inscription in an hour (or doing anything else really). Still getting “World Server Down” messages today. The PTR stress test didn’t turn out all that hot I suppose.
But perhaps the one thing driving most of us the nuttiest is the fact that mods are just dead. Almost none of the legacy things we’ve used will ever work again. There were so many changes to the UI that I eventually had to turn everything but AADV (the version that is supposed to work with 3.0) off just to get to where I could live with all the error messages from one mod. And it just gets worse from there.
ACE is gone. The updater and all the mods hosted there have been taken down never to return. So much for automatic updates from maybe the best and most trustworthy source. So we’ve had lots of comments from everyone struggling to know what to do about mods.
The good news is that mods are being updated as you read this. The bad news is that there is not a system that even comes close to replacing ACE. So you really have two choices at this time – go with the few you can’t live without or try out the Curse system. Neither one is exciting me in any way.
If you’ve always downloaded your mods one at a time then Curse will work for you. If you only run a few mods then it’s not that bad to go over to Curse or Wowinterface and just grab what you want. The only problem is that a TON of mods will just never be updated again. Many mod programmers have just thrown up their hands at having to completely reprogram everything with every single patch and finally called last straw.
So now you’re stuck with trying to find mods that work to replace what you had that do similar things. What a zoo. One bag (one of my favorites) is non-existent. The replacement I got is awful. It does weird stuff and I don’t feel like spending the hours it will take to figure it out.
For the second option that will auto update your mods the only game left in town is the curse downloader. It does an AWESOME job of updating mods, but finding them is terrible. Plus, you will have to eventually pay for the downloading service. I’m not averse to paying for good service, but this one is so inferior to ACE I’m not sure I will be able to justify the expense.
So here’s what I’ve done. I pared down to a list of just 10-12 things I can’t do without for now and will be a little patient with the rest of it. None of the bar mods work right now and that is the one that’s killing me the most. The five Blizz bars just don’t cut it for a shaman with all those totems to manage. I can’t imagine how rough it is for druids. Basically this means I have to relearn how to do a lot of things and that’s going to set me back a bit.
When you go to curse or Wowinterface looking for mods, pretty much anything updated on the 15th will work fairly well. So perhaps the best thing to do is just update the few things that you love and toss the rest for a while. There are so many cool new things to play with in the game that I didn’t want to spend 50 hours clanking around with mods, so to heck with most of them.
And, there is not really anyone to complain to. Blizz isn’t responsible for messing everything up while trying to make their game the best it can be. Sometimes that means changing things. You can’t scream at the mod guys, they are all doing it for free. But frankly after this I wish there were a few of them that would just go commercial and let me throw some money at them to keep things up to date and smooth. But that’s not going to happen in the age of the freetard programmer.
You see, the more we demand free programming that represents hundreds of hours worth of work, the more we have to live with complete fiascoes like this. There’s an old story that always comes to my mind in these situations.
A guy goes into a repair shop and sees a sign that reads: Fast, Cheap, Good – pick any two! You can have it fast and cheap, but it won’t be very good. You can have it Cheap and good, but it won’t be fast. You can have it good and fast, but it won’t be cheap.
So, since it’s going to be cheap, and you need it to be good, you better believe the mod problems are NOT going to fixed very fast. You’re talking about thousands of normal people out there with normal lives who have to earn a living somehow and they will get around to it when they get around to it.
In the meantime, drop the things you use that you can do without, update with the things that are available from the two remaining sources, and then sit back and wait for the rest. That’s just the way it is. We’re all going to have to let skill alone work for a while. But cheer up, everyone else is in the same boat you’re in. So keep bailing, and let your superior knowledge of the game continue to keep you Dominating!

I use wowmatrix to update my mods. I’ve never used ace or curse but I like wowmatrix and haven’t had any problems with it. Give it a try.
I also use wow matrix. It is not an automatic update but it lists all your mods and will checl them all at one time for updates then update them when you tell it to. It also has a search feature where you can search for new mods and download them.
I have used ace (loved it) i use all the others and none did it like wowmatrix.
So i whold say give it a short.
http://www.wowmatrix.com
It runs as from waht i found out (by looking into it coding) it does NOT host ANY addons it self. it eats the bandwith of the addon sites. So if you wish to help them out give the addon sites some money.
If they go down look at what will happen to WoW.
I think if there was no addon sites there whold be no big addons (looks at auctioneer)
Wowmatrix uses the curse client, so it’s all the same folks. Wowmatrix claims to be in beta, so you can expect a fee when Curse decides how they are going to structure the pay to play scale on this one.
Good. to know. Thanks Lawbringer.
WowMatrix is indept of the Curse client, hence the existence of a working Mac client from WowMatrix and a not-working beta Mac client from Curse.
When you hit the download button at wowmatrix the download is the cruse client – hence the fact that it’s still the curse client no matter how you slice it. And curse does have a client for mac. I’m not really sure how to unravel all of this, but there is one thing for sure. With Cosmos, ACE, and almost everyone else out of the business now it seems that as far as auto downloaders Curse is the only thing left. Makes me wonder if they bought everyone else out to corner the market and force a pay product. Not a bad idea.
I just went and checked again – if you go to wowmatrix.com, all of the client links (for each OS) point to a wowmatrix site, not the curse site. Having tried both of these, they are definitively not the same client. For sure the Mac client from Curse does not work well (at all for me). I can use WowMatrix happily, but add-on developers hate WowMatrix for the bandwidth it uses from their sites (for instance, Auctioneer is blocking any access from WowMatrix).
It doesn’t matter where the site points. We could host the same addons anyone else does, that doesn’t mean we wrote them or that they are different. When you hit the download link what you get is the curse client no matter where it comes from. They may have rebranded it, but the download for the windows version is the curse client 2.0.0.14, I’m not sure why this seems to be confusing you. The mods can be anywhere but the application that is grabbing them is the curse client.
Wowmatrix gets auctioneer from WoWInterface. So it can still be updated.
Um, I’m not confused – the client (the program you are running on your computer) for WowMatrix is not the same as the Curse client. Yes, either client can grab said addons wherever they want, but that does not make the piece of software that you are running on your computer the same. The Curse client basically does not work for Macs. The WowMatrix client does work for Macs. I don’t understand why you’re confused.
I went to curse.com on patch day, and found some 3.0 ready addon there, Bartender 4 is working, but no icon on my fubar… took me some time to know how to move the bars around… Auctioneer is hard to use… all the new stuff and list of content to read is just too much… and I still don’t get the full function of it yet (don’t know where is the auto price… have to type in the price now). Good thing Gatherer is doing great, good for us herbies.
For the next few days I will go on curse.com everyday until I get enough addon… new or updated.
(last try, lol)
The change in Auctioneer you see is because they finally dropped Auctioneer Classic, and the only version available now is Auctioneer Advanced (they dropped the Advanced name because they only have the one version now).
To sell at Auctioneer suggested prices, use the Appraiser tab. Drop your item in the box, click the refresh button, then adjust the slider to sell your glyphs in stacks of 1. Hit list itmes, and you’re good to go. One nice thing: Auctioneer will no longer default to a price 10% under the lowest price anymore. Now it actually recommends a price just slightly under the calculated market value, so you’ll maximize your profits.
my fave ui is dead now .. have faithfully used it for 3 years..cosmosui.org.. stated that its dead and thanked everyone for thier usage. still trying to get a decent mail and bag mod. auctionneer has a few buggs but im learing how to use them .. dont know what a batch post is yet ..mob2 info is dead. wardrobe is dead.. i neeed more bars now with all the new spells and well wow isnot going to add any..
Would you be wiling to put a article up on how to set up a good macro ui/ bar set?
Cosmos was never a UI, but rather a collection of other add-ons packaged as one big package. You can probably still get most of those individual pieces from other places (assuming the author in question is still working on it).
for bags i use arkinventory, pre-patch was amazing, sill waiting on update
I have used Curse’s downloader and I have used Wowmatrix. I prefer Wowmatrix because half the time Curse’s download client wasn’t working properly. As for all bar mods not working, the one I use is–CTMod. I know some guildies don’t like it, but it’s the only game in town right now as far as bar mods that work from what I am seeing. So I guess from what I am reading from everyone is that a lot of the download sites are now defunct and will not ever be re-opened?
I too found Bartender 4 works under 3.0.2. OneBag isn’t dead, it’s just in Beta. Look on Curse for OneBag3. It works, but isn’t configurable yet. The way I understand it, he’s going to merge OneView and OneBank into the mod also.
I turned on Pitbull3 and the new IceHUD and when the game came up, FuBAR was gone. I’m not sure which one is messing with it, but one of them is.
Bartender 4 has been working fine since patch day. The developer will NOT be putting in a Fubar menu – just type /bar.
If you’re having troubles with totems, find a totem add-on that will help. The beta version of FloTotemBar is working fine now.
The Ace mods are not dead, you just can’t go dl every single minor update direct from Ace anymore – they’re all hosted at Curse now. Certainly some of the authors have stopped, but most of my 50+ mods are either working as intended now or the developer is working on any last bugs.
“The beta version of FloTotemBar is working fine now. ”
Thank you thank you thank you
My fave totem mod so far had been TotemMenuRedux. It was clean, plain and simple. And defunct with TBC. SO I moved on to Yata, but I found out that in 3.0 it will only display vertically, and I had it set to go horizontal.
This FloTotemBar looks like just the right thing!!!
One nice thing I noticed on the day echoes of doom went live, is that like every 45 min or so we had server down. Well if yu plan your research inscription or alchemy transmute (the 19h ones) accordingly, then when server connect yu back and yu find your caracter is not in same location as before usually my cooldown were resetted and I could so another transmute. Next time this happens, try to use it to your best
Its been long rumored that WoWMatrix has keylogging software with it. I have since stopped using it “just in case” but I can not personally confirm that. Some say its only when you use a certain fuction of WoWMatrix (which I can’t currently recall).
Just a friendly reminder to use executables at your own risk!
For bar mods i use Dominos.. seems to be working fine with the patch.
Patch day, I got on, ignored everything else and leveled inscription. Since I had to go to work and my son had a school holiday, I paid him in M&M’s to mill every herb I had and make inks – it took him 3.5 hours+ to grind through roughly 3,000 herbs, send stuff back and forth to alts, etc., (bag space…). I put my glyphs up on the AH – but lowered the prices one “level” from what the guide said… and got clobbered. I did sell something like 20 Glyphs, some in the 300g range, but mostly I became laughing stock/butt boy on the trade channel. Even my guildies were bust me (not too hard – I do stuff for them for free…). So, the 70 or so glyphs that didn’t sell will go back on the AH for reduced prices and I’ll see how much I can recoup on the herb hoarding. Of course, I can’t sell the herbs now because I was “efficient” and got them all turned into inks to save time and bag space.
On the positive note, the first minor glyph I got was “Charge” and that sold well. I am going to save most of my Ethereal Ink for WotlK so I can skill up faster there and do research as quickly as I can.
OK heres my mods that I haev found updated and work fine for me.
Lightheaded. The new version works perfectly and allows instant talk with WoWhead to get comments, coords and and all the gains with no side effects atm…
Bankitems.. YES this is the best thing imo to use now that everything else has crashed and burned. Keeps the original WoW bag layout but will tell you who has what, you can browse bags, worn items, and banks of all characters from just one. Gives exact figures of numbers. If You mail urself items from one char to another it will usually record them (money sumtimes doesnt work) and stats that they are in the mail iof such ans such character. It will also tell you your individual gold for each character as you select them and also the overall amount. You can also search for stuff using a nifty search function. very easy adn if your like me and like to modify then the coding is pretty simple.
Cartographer. Currently using cartographer the most recent but not cartograpgher 3.0 thats kinda weird. using the outdated herb and mining stuff I have all of those but the extract gas plugin doesnt work which ahs me scuppered
… The left adn right click functions doesnt work so uif you want to change zones You just haev to click on the listbar at the top. Again really easy to use.
The New Auctioneer is also easy to use. Different but its quick to pick up. Also have the new omen working. basically the same as the old one
newest Mobinfo which hasnt faulted me, might be the old one I cant remember.. but still works fine
Thats all I use and although Cartographer isnt perfect yet its pretty close and from reading around I have discovered that this is being fixed.
Did anyone else go into panic attack when they logged on and everything died????.. I actually cried. I also managed to lose my time consuming notes labeling EVERYTHING>>>>!!!! o well. i shall rebuild. Stops me geting lazy i guess.
BTW BEST PATCH EVER.. still trying to figure out how to beat the new ultimate paladin but Im sure Ill get there. Rogue and Healer combo is working well atm.
O a quick note to say. STOP BEIGN LAZY and get rid of curse auto and all the rest iof them. They actually SUCK… They kept losing my addons and I found 3 of the same on my HD. Anyway yeah……
Lol this is such a pointless rant…
“mods don’t work for now so disable them”
Tell us something we don’t know.
And you usually write such good articles…
Well, guvernor, it may not be scintillating information I admit. But doing this post does give us all the chance to collaborate on solutions which is one of the things that can really help.
Fair point.
Lil Sparky’s – argh – this would actually make selling glyphs on server managable – too many too many – I am wondering if the removal of all the tradeskills that others have changed to go with inscription will mean costs fo those will increase too….
BTW – DYS guide to inscription was well worth it… Now just keep those minor glyphs coming!
The author of Lil’sparky’s replied to another thread that he is working on an update and it should be available soon.
Bartender4 works great. I play a shaman too and have plenty of bars. 4 on the bottom and 2 on each side.
Also for the bags issue I use bagnon. works well and has some decent functionality.
As for totems either it’s part of the new blizzard UI or it’s part of the new x-perl, but I now have totem timers that pop up under my character window.
Question for Gavin and Lawbringer though. I really miss lil’sparky’s. any idea when a compatible version will be coming out?? When i load that mod I get nothing but blanks in the inscription window.
As for the glyph market on Vek’nilash it sucks. made decent money the first day but now the competition is fierce. Lots of glyph’s going for mere silver. I’m hanging onto them and waiting for the market to not be so saturated. On patch day there were so many people crowded around the trainer for inscription you almost couldn’t click on her.
For the guy who milled all his herbs, try selling the extra ink. People are paying a premium for it right now as there is virtually none on the AH. I kept enough ink for me to make lots of glyph’s and sold a bunch more for ridiculous markups.
A quick list of ‘necessary’ mods that are working well at the moment:
Dominos (bar mod), Clique (casting), PerfectRaid (raidframes), oRA2 (raid CT-Raid replacement), Perl (unit frames), Bongos (bags/bank), Omen (threat), Recount (damage meter), Prat (chat frames), Outfitter (wardrobe), Hitsmode (combat log), Auctioneer, ATSW.
Still looking for a replacement mail mod–loved the scrolling feature in Better Inbox, but that’s broken. Postal is a so-so replacement but it’s working anyway.
I’ll keep an eye on things, but I’m assuming we’ll get a patch for a few internal errors on Tuesday. That should help as well.
Everyone seems to have xperl working but me >.<
Maybe I’m doing something wrong? I’ve always manually updated addons before and it’s worked fine, but this time I’ve had serious problems with buggy addons that on curse.com were listed as good for version 3.0.2…
Mostly involves xperl (the options menu just… doesn’t work. Full stop. It’s completely impossible to use), as well as prat which refuses to show any player chat of any description. Guild messages and addon load messages seem to work fine, but I get nothing from /g, /s, /p, /2, /whatever
Little help anyone?
Tamathia–as far as Prat goes, try loading only Prat and see if you still have difficulty. Mine is working as advertised. If it’s not working while being the only mod loaded, try to delete the prat folder from inside your WTF folder (copy them somewhere first to be safe).
The only thing not working in Prat for me is the “button” module. It puts the scroll buttons in the middle of my chat window?!? I just disabled it and everything’s fine.
BTW, I am using Prat as a replacement to TasteTheNaimBow. Not perfect, but it does inject some colour to my chat windows…
Yay for another horrible patch week
The only good thing I did was not log on right away… a had several friends who got on right when the servers were up and lost all their mounts when it crashed soon after and are just now getting them back.
I also had to do like Gavin and ditch everything but the new auctioneer at first. I’m slowly finding replacements for what I can’t live without at curse but it’s very frustrating.
Oh well… I figure if I can get over that as well as half the server asking where a Lexicon of Power is every 5 min and my horrid 3 fps lag… I’ll get to enjoy the amazing new talent trees, achievements, and my fresh little scribe
A lot of my mods also broke on patch day, but I knew they would. After spending a few hours maxing inscriptions, then selling them on an alt (and making 3000g in a day!), I went one bye one testing all my mods.
I’ll miss metamap, although I tried cartographer and didnt like it. I’ll miss JasonQuest which was quite useful with helping party members on quests. I’ll also miss Outfitter – I loved switching gear depending on where I was or what I was doing.
Luckily some of my “cant’ live without it” mods have been updated…. such as CT_BarMod… I bound my F1-F12 keys to spells since I am a keypusher, and not a mouse button pusher. It also lets me place and move bars around the screen. My healing friend whose Grid mod broke, I found an update for her and I think she’s happy now. BEQL works, but not completely (Quest log mod).
As someone stated, I also miss the easy Alt-RightClick and auto-pricing of Auctioneer, but the appraiser tab is confusing, I guess I should try it more.
So, about 90% of my mods are working now, and I’ve even found a few new ones that I like (a minimap mod that makes it square, scalable, has coords, and auto-sorts my mod icons)
mate im a shammy too
i found mods that work sorta good atm…
Bartender 4 – Works well… great for me available at Curse.
Type /bar to config very simple to use
YATA – Brilliant for (obviously) totem… 4 simple totem bars…
/yata also easy config
SimpleMINIMAP – still works… may have to load Out Of Date but works fine.
BaudBag – Working with 3.0 as an old addon also… One Bag copy… no need for extra config… Bank viewer too with bags open from bank…
Enjoy
Hope i helped you all!!
I use a default UI + bindpad + Auctioneer + OpenAll+OmniCC. That’s it.
The one bar is enough for me to monitor my cooldowns, and everything else is keybound somewhere off-screen so I don’t have to worry about it. Very clean, and doesn’t require me to maintain something that breaks in every patch.
Bought your guide – yes it was hard to last through all those disconnects, but I leveled the skill quickly (after I found the trainer in H.H.) and put up all my inscriptions for 1 or 2 gold less than the other 3 guys who had leveled up their skills even quicker – things have died down since the first day a bit but have made nearly 6k gold so far and that’s mainly off of all the stuff I had to make to level up anyways
Only one good minor proc so far (the 50% increased dmg for BM hunter’s pets) but it is selling steadily – just an update – thanks again for all you do
I bought your levelling guide too, but unfortunately for me the patch came out about a week too early for me. I was forced in the end to buy herbs to be able to level up on patch day. The vast bulk of them were at reasonable prices however. Still, overall I would’ve spent around 2.2k on herbs. To my dismay though, when I went to put my first glyphs up there were some up before me. Unfortunately they only decided to put their glyphs up for 50g for the basic ones, forcing me to do likewise. I’d have figured a 100+ gold price tag a better starting point.
Still, I had enough sales over the next two days to get nearly 3k gold. This effort was severely hampered by a string of undercutters absolutely flooding the market with glyphs at 3g or less. I have no idea why people want to lose money like that, as at these prices the glyphs were well below cost and they’d have made more by simply selling the herbs. Sigh.
As for the mods, I too miss my outfitter. I also need to get the new Omen and Recount as well as the obvious Auctioneer. However, the one mod that I’m really pining for at the moment is Dr Damage. It is well broken and won’t be fixed for at least a week, and that’s being optimistic. It’s such an essential mod that I’m quite lost without it.
We all know ur pain. Sometimes I just want to buy out all those ppl selling glyphs that costs 2 ethereal inks and just npc all of them.
well the super cheap ones for 5g. Lots of undercutters in horde Thunderlord.
Thank GOD for Auctioneer. Just dled auctioneer today and it saves me hours just putting glyphs up. I always had A LOT of glyphs that were unsold and I also make a lot of glyphs daily. It always took me 2 hours putting up all my glyphs in the AH now instead of manually seperating hundreds of glyphs, Auctioneer will put them in seperately for me. Now I can spend another 3 hours a day milling herbs I saved up on duo-box.
Two weeks before the patch I farmed herbs and had over 1500 herbs in my bank. When patch day came out, I was able to level inscription without having to buy herbs, so that saved me a lot of fustration and agony not to mention gold.
I was the first person on my server to reach 365 in inscription by using Galvin’s Guide. The server was a big mess and at first I wasnt able to do anything, but I just waited it out and stayed up all night to level it. The next day no one was able to go to Outlands because it was crashing, so i was able to make and sell higher level glyphs that other inscribers couldn’t make. I made over 2000 gold the first night. I was selling my glyphs for 50 and 100 gold. Soon other people were starting to get on the bandwagon and they were selling their glyphs for 10 or 5 gold. I used the money i made off my glyphs to buy them off the ah, and resold them for my price. Unfortunately I didnt have enough gold to keep up. I ended up spending my gold to buy the cheaper ones and resaling them. After awhile people were selling their glyphs in trade chat for 3-5 gold. People in the trade chat were complaining on how high the glyphs were in the ah and were buying the 3-5 gold ones. I couldnt beat that. I had to lower my prices drastically, I refused to sell my glyphs so cheap after all my hard work, so I decided to sell my glyphs by level. Level 15@15 gold etc etc. To my amazement I have been doing pretty well, and some times I will throw in a DK glyph just to get people to buy from me. This is actually working, and most people send me tells saying ” Are you joking,” I will tell them no im not joking buy from me today and I’ll throw in a free DK glyph. Of course I don’t do that everytime, but I have to do something to beat the competition.
The minor glyphs have been a disappointment, for some reason no one on my server seems to wants to pay for anything they want something for free.
I have a stash of glyphs and ink in the ah from all the herbs I collected, and most of my customers like the fact that they dont have to wait on a glyph. I just go right to my bank and get the glyph, takes two seconds and they are on their way.
i disagree with you lawbringer on the wowmatrix being curseclient…if it’s the same code…they greatly improved it over the curse client…works way better
i guess i was a fortunate one here, i knew that addons wouldn’t work on patch day so i took my addons folder and moved it to my desktop and went from there first looking for updates for the addons i had, luck ran out from there, but one good thing happened, 2 days after patch i had all my addons back with no errors. i feel your pain about extra bars Gavin, i use to use bongos, as of Thursday night bongos didn’t work, next best thing was domino’s and to find out same author and just an upgraded version of bongos yea got action bars next, next was coords, downloaded map notes and yea coords, to make it short i got my mail mod, outfitter, titan quest, omen, dtm, and a few others loaded and works fine, all on Thursday night. addons take patients to get the updated version so if your addons aren’t working and you want them back, just wait and see if they get updated if not find one that is similar or is a run off such as domino’s to bongos. good luck and happy mod hunting.
When using Bigwigs I cant see any writing in my chat screen which was pretty funny. Being told when to roll over Vent and not knowing what you got. apparently i rolled 100 on my T6 helm tho so im not complaining
Inscription has been a bit of a farce so far but i got pretty lucky with my minor glyphs (water walking, underwater breathing & water shield) so i have managed to make 4k gold so far and still hav a bank full of mats and glyphs to spare and this is from a player who is very bad at making (or retaining) money. made a few DK ones that im holding onto until WOTLK goes live and hoping that will make me a bit aswell
My server is horible at selling glyphs. Actually, after the first day I have only been able to sell a handfull of major glyphs. Minor glyphs are selling okay but there are so many scribes on my server that half or more of my minor glyphs are known by someone else. There are many people giving the glyphs away if mats are provided! I gave up on most of my majors and just gave them to guildies (they always tip good) and I am saving the rest for a better market. I was one of the first on my server to lvl inscription (thanks for the guide) and I did make almost 3k by the next morning.
Luckily I have found addons to do most everything I absolutely need. I dont use too many addons anyways but I do miss some of my map addons. I tried cartographer but I was not happy with it so I am not using any right now.
Cosmos was one of my favorite addon collections. I used many of their addons. I have had to find replacements for many of them. It did force me to pare down my addons though. A shame they will not be doing any more updates. I have not found a decent replacement for EasyMail yet though. I did find a good quest log replacement in Lightheaded. I did manage to make a few of the addons from cosmos function by loading out of date addons. They are ones that did not have other dependencies. I removed the rest. Still searching for other replacements.
