Latest Patch News
Posted on September 19th, 2008 by Lawbringer under General TipsYou’re going to get to play with some of the WotLK changes sooner than you think. For those of you who have been saving up those herbs, your time to profit is almost here. The public test realm using patch 3.0.2 went live on the PTR Tuesday, which means that the next major patch is just around the corner.
If you don’t read the patch notes, understand that this patch contains so many huge changes that it’s almost an expansion. Blizzard is going to implement a lot of the changes in WotLK in this patch. You are going to get all of your training points back since every class has a list of dozens of significant redos.
As a result, there is just no way to comment on all of the class changes at one time. Even if we broke it down by class it’s going to take a lot of testing and several articles, but you know we’ll get it up here as we play through the new changes. But there are some things we wanted to cover today, since they apply to everyone.
First, Inscription is going live in this patch to level 375. That means all your herbs are worth a ton of gold and glyphs are going to be available. I will try to make sure I get an inscription leveling guide up as soon as I am confident about the progression to 375. I’ve got a lot of herbs to gather! You herbalists can expect your services to be in wild demand, so I sure hope you took our advice and powerleveled that profession.
The achievement system will also be implemented. This interesting panel tracks a whole slew of things you do in the game and represents another kind of ‘ding’ as you accomplish all sorts of things. There are 749 achievements available in the beta as of today, so if you ever get bored you still have plenty to work on. A funny one is Friend or Fowl, which requires you to kill 15 turkeys in 3 minutes.
Speaking of achievements, be sure to attend the Pirate’s Day event in Booty Bay on the 19th. This one time, one day event is sure to land in the world event section of the achievements list so go check it out.
Since I’ve been playing a priest recently (and now have the entire epic PvP honor gear set from all that work) perhaps the most significant changes in the next patch are for casters. My favorite change has to do with spell cast timer pushbacks and channeling interrupts.
This is going to be a big help for casters vs. mele classes. The patch notes state that when attempting to cast a spell, the first and second hits will only add .5 seconds to the cast time, and further hits will have no effect! No more looking at my cast bar and seeing +2.7 sec because some hunter keeps using his instant cast shots on me. This works nearly the same way for channeled spells in that the first two hits reduce the channeling time by 25%, and further hits have no effect.
Now certainly this doesn’t apply to things that completely interrupt casting like silence, silencing shot, earth shock, shield bash and all those things that just stop casting completely. But even in PvE, it’s going to make solo survivability for casters a lot easier. If you’ve ever pulled 4 mobs and not even been able to heal yourself or get a spell of any kind off, this will really be a welcome change.
Next, anything that grants +spell damage or +healing is being consolidated into a single stat called Spell Power. All gear that grants +healing or +spell damage will now reflect the one stat +spell power. As a result, your visible bonus healing for healing classes will appear lower, but healing spells will gain more from spell power than damage spells so the net result will be the same.
This is an interesting change that will make gear more usable for all casting classes regardless of whether they are helaers or not. Healers will always get a bigger buff to their healing spells from spell power, so stacking all that +heal gear will be a thing of the past and respeccing to a damage build will not require a major gear change.
On a lighter note, you will also be able to visit Stormwind harbor, which is pretty impressive. You can also go see the huge hole in the ground where the purple Dalaran bubble used to be. Dalaran has already been moved to Northrend as the Kirin Tor make their move. It turns out that the bubble was more of a complete sphere, so the big hole in the ground might be worth a look.
You will also be able to visit the new barber shops and change the look of your toon if you like. It seems that they have introduced some new hairstyles for each race, and you can also change your hair color and a few other thing if you like.
And last, but certainly not least the 51 point talent trees will open up as well. You are going to have new skills to train based on your talents if you so choose, and that means that you’ll have a gob of new tricks to play with. You can find a link to the patch notes as well as a talent calculator below so you can read about each class and then fiddle with the new talents in the next few days so you have some idea of what you want to try out.
This is a big patch for WoW, and you’re going to love all the changes (although there iwll be some initial balance issues that will need to be played through and worked on). So check out the patch notes for yourself, work with the talent trees and get those herbs harvested/bought and ready to sell! Oh, and go hang out with the pirates too - this patch is really going to Dominate!

WOW can’t wait for these to be implemented…anyone know if the hunter pet changes will be put in?
If you read the website lawbringer has kindly linked for us
it says that pets will now have the talent point system which gives them 1 talent point from level 20 (Pet level) and 1 talent point every 4 levels(pet level).
And since the new talent tree is being applied hunters will now be able to tame the exotic beasts! how exciting huh?
Very nice. Having this patch sooner will make going into WotLK a lot easier. A lot less changes to worry abput when the time comes and you get a chance to get used to some of the new systems
I’ve read all of the patch notes and looked at all of the new telents for every class (except priest and mage the only classes I don’t play) and all I can say is damn. There’s changes that weren’t even in the Beta Trees. Out of all of the changes I’m most excited about the Rogue trees and Restro shammy trees and skills. Skills like Earth living weapon (Imbue the Shaman’s weapon with earthen life. Increases healing done by x and each heal has a 20% chance to proc Earthliving on the target, healing an additionaly over 12 sec. Lasts 30 minutes.) , and the consolidation of most of our totems into more practical ones, not to mention more caster buff totems like: Flametongue Totem is now a flat spell damage totem.
I personally liked BC, I think it is a good xpac that gave us tons of new content: Raids, Arena, New quest, New skills (not many but a big talent boost), and tons of other things that kept many of us gaming way past our bed times. But I see WotLK as a whole nother level that BC can’t hope to touch. New Hero Class which will give players tons of new skills to experience, while the Vets thats been playing since dreaming of raiding LBRS a much needed new experience. While new players will strive to get their first toon to 55 to play the new “Bad ass” class. Ten more lvls to grind out while exploring ten new places. New mobs, Instances, Talents, Profession, Class skills. Raids where you can choose to go in with 10 men or 25, which will allow for much more raiding and lead to less people sitting out on the side lines waiting to get rotated in.
A person commented on the Origanal trailer a few months back (On Youtube) that they are going to quit because they don’t like the idea of having to ditch their t5 equipment at lvl 80. I can understand that he worked hard to get it (him and his guild), it tool many hours of killing, organization, waiting, hoping and the yelling of “Woot” to get his shinny T5 gear. With BC (not exact but dam close) all they can do with BC is add more mobs and more raids (which would be really slow in coming), skill upgrades would be minor along with minor talent upgrades to keep the classes balanced. I pay 15$ a month I want to do other things then what my main has already done a million times, hell who doesn’t? So I asked him “Why would you quit because they added new content” his answer was “Because I don’t want to adapt my play style and have to relearn all new quests and raids, instances” All I could say to the guy was “Wow isn’t for you, online games are constantly changing to give the players new experiences and keep them entertained while they play” Of course he didn’t reply back, but my point is this is by far the biggest upgrade to Wow since it first hit shelves, way before the dream of having 10 million players…. I don’t know about you guys but I am extremely excited!!!
they did the same thing for BC, why do u sound so suprised ?
o and by the way, ALL the changes that are in the test realm are all on the beta realms, noob.
many many many spells have been added, removed, adjusted throguh out testing. thats what the beta realms are for.
o and to the rest of your post, TLDR
Do not get the PTR realm and the beta realm confused as I’ve apparently done. DK’s and Northrend (as of right now, if ever) will not be available on the PTR. If you want to test these two important parts, use the beta servers.
um, duh, if u not in beta u not get to do beta wolk stuff.
PTR is just for the new content patch that PREPARES your current installation for wolk
I’ve been on the PTR since Tuesday. The changes are deffinatly awesome. I have yet to see how PvP will workout with the new talents. But I’m liking the fact that shammies finaly get some CC and general all round love’n from Blizz.
Can’t wait for WOTLK… I felt that there should have been a pirate-when-u-want it trinket or some other quest for Pirate Day, but no such luck. more like suck. Anyway, it was fun for a little bit. And as a resto shaman who is debating going dps, I appreciate the tip…I will just wait for my healbot gear to change over to spell power, and save trouble and $$. Give us shamans bubblez too, then we are invincible~!
QQ about the pirate day thing.
woot first post!
seriously though these changes rock coming from someone who plays all the classes. this is awesome. no more will i be stuck stacking shadow damage gear on my lock or priest. the game is evolving at a huge rate and all of you guys qqing over being 70 for a few months talk to the people that were 60 for over a year.
hey dont you mean the 4.0 patch the the one i got on tuesday
There is no such thing as WoW 4.0, stop trolling.
WTF I get this email newsletter on the 20th and it mentions the Pirate Day that happened YESTERDAY? I was on all day and didn’t see a single shred of announcement in any capital city. Dang sounded like fun too.
it was announced, talk to the commoners in pirate clothes on almost every corner next time
I have recently moved to England from California, and my computer is still in transit. I hope to get it for the upgrade. This sounds like a new age of wow. The inscriptions sounds a lot like the Jewel Crafter class, everybody will be trying to level one of their toons in this class, as will I. I have several flower pickers in my 7 toons, and usually pick them during normal play. I hope to make some serious gold with this new trade skill, but will probably burn up most of my herbs leveling my new inscription toon.
I’m just wondering…

this patch applies to all realms right? from the 23rd of September?
and if it does this is so coooool…..
*sigh* Blizzard has changed the cast time reduction of Incinerate granted by the Emberstorm talent back to -0.25 seconds instead of -0.5 seconds. I don’t get it. If you look at the raw spell, Incinerate should be more powerful than Shadowbolt when there is an Immolate on the target, less powerful when there isn’t. Yet, because of the way +spell damage is linked to cast time (rather than as a direct multiplier) Shadowbolt is *much* stronger. In fact, I currently have +93 more fire damage than shadow damage *and* I have +10% fire damage from Emberstorm, which should make Incinerate far far better than Shadowbolt, regardless of whether there’s an Immolate on the target and yet Shadowbolt still does more damage when there isn’t. When you factor in the damage increase debuff from Improved Shadowbolt, Shadowbolt is the superior choice. So much for the idea of a fire lock. Really, the only fire spells I even use are Immolate and Conflagrate. Rain of Fire is the suck, Hellfire is too dangerous and too expensive given it’ll likely get interrupted, Searing Pain is too weak and yet also too agro intensive and Soulfire is a non-starter since it has a 4 sec cast time (even with talents), a 1 min CD and costs a shard, which is harder to farm for destro locks.
The point of all this is that I was looking forward to being able to abandon Shadowbolt altogether and simply use Incinerate. It should be the superior choice for a destro lock. But Blizzard have decided to keep it nerfed. I’m not saying that there aren’t other really nice changes, which there are, even more so for destro locks compared to affliction or demo, but I’m disappointed that Incinerate is still practically useless.
Eh? It seems that there’s a discrepancy between the patch notes and the talent calculator in the link provided above. The patch notes have Emberstorm as reducing Incinerates cast time by 0.5 secs (5/5), so it seems that Blizz gave fire locks some love after all! Assuming the patch notes are correct, and not the talent page. In which case I’m quite happy, and have no other gripe with the talents. Though maybe Empowered Imp could be further up the tree so people could build an Imp spec, going down to Demonic Empowerment in the Demo tree and Emp Imp in destruct tree!
That’d be a fun build to try, alas it’s not to be. Oh well.
if you have suggestions or questions regarding specific abilities or classes don’t cry about them here, go to the ptr and then post in their forums - that is why they are there. and i didn’t really understand pirate day; you get a buff to look like a pirate for an hour, then talk to the captain chick in booty bay and get the buff extended to a day…no fun items, no rep, no quests? tried it out but didn’t understand the point. meh guess they can’t all be brewfest.
Uh, for some reason I have never been able to use the WoW forums. They won’t let me log in. Anyways, Brewfest sucks. Sure, there’s nice trinks, but I don’t see any point in getting the tokens at all now. Used to be able to get a mount from them, now I have to kill the boss a squillion times and hope that it drops and hope that I get it … my 558 tickets from last year are meaningless. I wish they’d just kept it the same (for the mount at least … nice trinks from boss) and I could’ve just bought the damn thing.
OK FANTASTIC, this was a fantastic patch Im Loving it BUT OMG, WTF happened to the addons? They all seem to haev died. I need my gathering ones back, used to use Cartographer with all its little plugins to moniot herbs, mining, treasure, gas clouds. IM STUCK. in 24 hrs I have actually LOST money lol… Virtually ^^….
