WotLK Hunter Pets – Major Changes
Posted on September 15th, 2008 by Gavin under Hunter Pets, World of Warcraft, WotLKWhen I say major changes I mean that more has changed than has stayed the same. So many changes, in fact, that it’s going to be hard to do more than just hit the highlights in the space we have here. But since we’ve had so many requests for info from the Beta, we can feel pretty comfortable publishing these since they seem about 95% locked in and will probably stay the same on release day. So let’s get to it.
First, a LOT of the effort hunters used to have to put into pets is simply gone. Training new pets and getting them up to speed is merely a matter of taming, and that’s about it. Here’s a list of the things that just went “poof.”
- Pet training points – these are gone, so you don’t have to worry about where to place those odd points that just don’t fit.
- Pet Loyalty - axed for WotLK. There may eventually be some sort of system to entice hunters to keep pets, but for now, it’s the equivalent of taming a pet with “Best Friend” status. When training points disappeared, so did the need for loyalty.
- Pet leveling – mostly gone. Pets will still have to level to some degree, but it will be a lot more transparent than it is now. A level 1 beast trained by a level 80 hunter will hop to level 70 instantly. That way the pet isn’t completely useless while you try to work on levels. So if you missed that ghost saber at level 22, it’s not such a big deal to go back and get one for the coolness factor.
- Nearly everything associated with training points – you will no longer have to make hard choices (since training points are no more) between things like armor or resistances. All pets now get base levels of resistance to all 5 schools of magic as they level, although you can still choose to increase these if you like through another method.
- Learning new pet skills – completely gone. Never again will you have to go train Bellygrub to get Gore 4. Instead, all pets will know 3 basic abilities (and a number of talent skills, more on those later) and those skills are set in stone.
- Having to keep an open slot at the Stable Master – all we can say is yeehaaw to this one. Since you don’t have to train a trash pet to learn some skill or other, you will be able to put real pets in all your slots (the beta even shows an additional slot you can buy, which means you can have 5 pets).
- Some of your Current Pet’s skills – sorry, but if your pet knows claw and bite, they are going to lose one for the reason mentioned above. All pets will have a set number of things they can use, and they will not get more than one “Focus Dump” skill.
- Crummy Pets – there is simply not a single pet in the game that will get you laughed at. Up until now, there was a set of “caster” pets that had such awful stats that training points just couldn’t make up for how bad they were. In WotLK if you can tame it, it will make a good pet. There are even some pets that have surprisingly useful special abilities. I mean, who would have ever guessed that they could make a moth a decent DPS pet?
That’s a good basic look at what’s gone, now let’s look at what those have been replaced with. Personally, I like the new system a LOT more. Pets will now be much more like your own character, and have a special talent point screen where you can select and customize that pet to be exactly what you want it to be. This new system also has some wicked skills that don’t even exist now. A level 70 pet in WotLK will be much better than a level 70 pet now.
- Three Pet “Types” – All pets are now divided into three distinct “types.” Cunning, Ferocity, and Tenacity. These types loosely correspond to Cunning pets normally having some sort of debuff or short duration Crowd Control, Ferocity pets have DPS skills that can buff themselves or even an entire party (or raid, we’re not sure with all the raid buff tweaks yet) and Tenacity pets generally have talents that will help it to tank well. There is a LOT of mixing and matching in the special skills, so remember that these are merely generalizations. Each type also gets a specific modifier % to Damage Armor and Health.
- 31 Pet “Families” – All pets are further divided into 31 family groupings that determine the 1 “Special” skill that they will use. Some of the special skills are simply incredible. Rhinos get a skill called Stampede that knocks all enemies within 10 yards back 15 yards! Warp Stalkers no longer warp toward their enemy, but they will instead warp the enemy away from them up to 30 yards.
- Pet Talent Trees – there are so many awesome tricks in the talent trees you’re just going to have to browse through them for yourself. But basically, not only can you have a decent tanking pet, but that tank pet will can also be given talents that will help it do good damage as well. The talent trees as a replacement for training points is an incredibly awesome change.
- ALL pets can now get a Speed increase skill – no longer will you be stuck with a pig to get charge. All Tenacity pets can learn charge, and the other two pet types can all learn dash or dive.
It all boils down to a few really neat points. Training pets is easier than ever, and you have a lot more control over what your pet can do. There are more pet choices than ever, and more skills to choose from. It is certainly going to lead to a lot more variety in the pets running around. You will be able to customize your pet skills in a way that suits your needs, and do so with a lot less effort than ever.
All these changes will certainly make pets for MM and SV hunters more useful, but it may be even harder to leave BM behind when you see the simply wicked awesome firepower of a BM hunter with a core hound or devilsaur exotic ferocity pet. The 51st talent point in the BM tree gives the hunter the ability to train pets from the 6 exotic pet families and 4 extra pet skill points to put into pet DPS skills, or other tanking skills for the rhino family.
Here are some convenient links to where you can dig a little deeper into the WotLK pet info for yourself. But I warn you: don’t look at them if it’s going to make you ruin your keyboard drooling, you still have a rather long wait!

I heard that WotLK was going live nov 13 or 14 thats not very far away…
Personally I have never liked hunters. Most hunters I’ve met are slightly retarded, though there have been a few exceptions. By “slightly retarded” I mean rolling need on stuff like plate because they can disenchant it and need enchanting supplies or money. Seriously, I don’t think you get this sort of thing with any other class. Anyway, I’ve not been attracted to them at all so far. Great, you could have an ape, or big cat as your pet. Woop. Now however, with the exotic beasts and the ability to train a Chimaera, it might be worth rolling a hunter (God forbid). Plus, it also gives me the freedom to act like a 5 year old.
Being a hunter has nothing to do with the way you act… From what I’ve seen all classes has a lot of idiots behind the Keyboard. I’ve seen a Holy Priest roll need on a blue Rogue, shammy or dps war mace (Good for all really and it’s the one that drops in SL). The reason was to replace their other mace that had str, agi AP O.O… From what I’ve seen Hunters have a lil more intelligence as a whole due to the fact that they have to constantly prove themselves, but maybe thats just my realm…
My dear Sigoroth,
I wish you good luck in your further encounters with the hunter kind and keep those few good hunters on your friends list.
I feel bad that you have not had the opportunity to group with more good hunters. Hunters are easy to start out with and level because you have your meat shield, aka your pet, and you do fairly good dps. So even if you don’t have a clue as to what you’re doing, you can get by rather well. And I completely agree that far too many hunters are huntards… but they give the good ones a bad name and a bad rep. I am by no means saying I’m an amazing uber hunter, but I know my roll in a group and I do my best to do it. I do hope you roll a hunter just to try them out at least and to see that the pets of good hunters are like an extension of themselves and their ability to contribute to a group, not merely a meat shield. But please don’t act like the 5 year old huntards! Give us a hand in improving our image because there are lots of other people out there who roll different classes that are equally as thoughtless in their actions.
Every class gets idiots behind them, not just hunters, because a LOT of people play this game. Unfortunately, hunters appeal to the masses more than most due to being easy to play solo, fairly easy to keep alive, having your own nameable pet, blah blah blah. So you get a lot more people playing hunters, a lot more idiots playing hunters, and a lot more idiots managing to get hunters to 70 and then vomiting all over the already tarnished reputation of the class.
I remember the good old days when Beast Mastery was arguably the worst talent tree in the entire game, and hunters weren’t known as huntards…
you want to talk about “ape” “neanderthal” “semi-retarded classes”? talk about warriors. oohh look at my rage meter, better attack! that’s all they do. priests…hhmm let me not worry bout crowd-control, a pet, dps, let me just sit back on my ass and use my healer addon…if ANYTHING hunters represent the more intelligent and more sophisticated gamer by FAR. hunters are survivalists at heart, and besides are you really DUMB enough to think that how one rolls on an item reflects the intelligence of the millions of people that have hunter toons? WoW, you must be a warrior.
umm… Dude, I’m really not sure who you group with, but only idiotic hunters would have enchanting. Leather working and Skinning are the professions for a hunter, and “Gives me the freedom to act like a 5 year old.” What the hell is that all about? I’ve met people from every class like that! So, before you just go dumping on hunters because you don’t like them, realize that everyone can act like that if they wish. For gods sake, it’s my personality.
yeah this is totally spot-on. a person’s class doesn’t reflect the behavior of the person.
however the myopic view of leatherworking/skinning hunters are the only way to go is way off. once you get into set gear, leatherworking becomes useless. besides enchanting wouldn’t be that idiotic for hunter if their guild needed someone to DE. fun classes like engineering can also work well with hunters. All in all, profession choice is quite open for hunters.
additionally,
just like engineering (although slightly more with gnome race), and alchemy (subtlely more with all caster classes), enchanting is a profession that can benefit all classes.
slightly retarded? you a-r-e p-a-t-h-e-t-i-c.
using your everso unsophisticated example, rolling for “need” on plate to DE the mats is GREEDY, it’s self-serving, but it’s not retarded. People like YOU, Sigoroth, who plague the game with warped, vulgar indiscretion towards a class that is, in reality, one of the most sophisticated in the entire game (any tank class is obviously of the cro-magnon level of intelligence. why? hunters juggle their own mini part (with pet) as well as placement and CC.) If anything YOU are in awe of a hunter’s finesse and squirm discordantly in the limitations of your non-hunter class.
What is lost here is the irony that you are exactly the kind of a-hole the hunter community simply does not need. Clearly these changes weren’t necessary for you to act like a 5 year old.
The comments that you have posted goes to show that the tard part should go to you^^ This also goes out to all of you that take this game way too seriously. Key word GAME, people like you take the fun out of the game and by the way just as some of the other posts have said every class has people that play poorly. If you are an idiot you are an idiot^^ Please take some time and reflect on your comments and perhaps you will find some way to better express yourself than to try to put others down. That is part of being older than a five year old. Have fun with your game and if you do not want to be a hunter then do not be one. Wow free will gotta love it huh^^
This sounds really awesome, I can hardly wait….
Has this been checked with Blizzard to see if it will stay this way in WOLK? It seems many things have been nerfed for Beta (look at the mats needed for Blacksmithing, Leatherworking, etc.), pet maintanence may be something else Bizzard nerfed simple to get people to 80 faster so other aspects of the game could be better tested.
In beta they let you make 3 premade classes to 80 so lvling sure aint a problem. On that note about nerfing, god i hope they make the devilsaurs a little more quiet because they sound exactly like there 50ft counterpart when tamed.
All I can say is wow…
My very first, and main toon is a hunter and solo play is a big part of the game for me. Looking through all the new pet talents and individual abilities has my head spinning and wanting one of Every pet! The possibilities are endless for creating a customized, amazing companion for yourself as well as a group or raid. Personally, I really only use one of my pets… my favorite rare cat Rak’Shiri… I have a dragonhawk that I played around with for awhile but got bored with.. and I have a raptor I haven’t bothered to level. But looking at all the new possibilities, it’ll make it so much easier to have several specialized pets that I will actually use instead of collecting dust in the stables. Taking away the huge hassle of leveling a pet so much will certainly help.
The only problem I see is the fact that I can’t have one of each pet…
lol.
Time to wipe that drool off my keyboard…
this looks real cool. but like its said above. just because you play a hunter doenst make you retarded.. omg ive seen a hunter at lvl 70 that didnt know what freze trap was.!!! but i also saw a prot pally at lvl 65 that refused to get any +spell dmg gear. and take all the +str, +stam, +hit gear from warriors in groups.
these new pet changes will definitely make me focus more on my pet and what skills hes using than i have in the past., making it a little more challenging imo.. having to know when to click taunt, last stand, intervene.. etc..
now our pets are cooler than warlock pets imo.. when before warlock pets were the better of the 2. imo
Wow after looking at the pets and the Talents I would have to say the Rhino is going to be one of the best pets for MM and Surv. Great for soloing due to it’s high aggro Arm, Hp and Roar of sacrifice (Absorbs damg up to 50% of it’s hp caused against a friendly target for 12 secs) And in Wsg you can really slow down flag runners or chasers with Stampede (Your rhino slams nearby enemies within 10 yards, causing [rank] damage and knocking them back 15 yards.) I think the hunter class just became a lil funner and added a lot more versatility to pets in general. Hopfully they wont change too much from now til WotLK goes live O.o
Looks like Rhinos are exotic pets though… that means only BM hunters with Beast Mastery can get them unfortunately.
The exotic pets aren’t going to do you any good if you’re survival or MM spec, it’s the 51 point for BM.
What I want to know is this: What about prowl?
he he he a moth as a dps pet thats funny but what i want to know is will you be able to respec your pet?
Yes, it looks like pet trainers will be able to untrain your pets so you can redo their talent points.
Great article, and great news for all the BM hunters out there. BM really went out of fashoin recently, and its nice to see we’re getting a bit of love. I’m totally gonna have a Devilsaur called Stampy
Wow, this is a HUGE breakthru. I have the record for fastest leveling to 70 on my server, and it’s Hunter All the way lol! Hunters are extremely good PvPers and PvE’rs to, which makes them the first or second most played class, depending on server. With all this new stuff, the number of Hunters is going to skyrocket, so it could be just Dk’s and Hunters, lol
Good post guys.
Now all we need is the ability to put pet abilities on regular action bars and we become full of epic win, especially us BMs out thar
Camoflauge-greatest new ability ever
i have personally never been a fan of hunters, but these new pet things look awesome, thank god they finally reformed this pets were really hard to understand. I never really got it
I am a BM hunter and I am not a “hunttard” but I am not the best either. I have seen tards in every class. I know my roll in the group and use my traps wisely. Anyway it looks like choosing BM all those months ago was a wise choice from what I see. Great article thanks.
i was wondering what if u train a “exotic” pet n then go MM or SURV do u loose ur pet or does it just loose its special ability. Cause if u dont loose it ill prolly still go BM 2 get a cooler pet lol. then switch back.
1. yes it is true November 13th is the new street date and the Colectors Edition has been posted on Gamestop.om for reserves. So get on it and lets start up.
2. with the pets getting the goodness. what about the hunter themselves? does this mean Marksmanship is going to be the tree to go with and Tank your pet to become a PVP master or Tanks and DPS for instances?
hmm… IMO this takes half the skill out of being a hunter…. Pets play a massive role in how effective you are as a hunter…. seems more to me like narrowing your options in pet diversity, and mearly allowing you to choose between the ’skin’
sry but I don’t know the average dps for a lvl 57 bat but He(my bat) hits30s with lvl 1 screech yes newbish, but normal melees are 130 give or take20 Dmg
hunter-haters are utter morons. prejudice against an entire class? I think people forget precisely HOW MUCH hunters have to juggle in each battle:
mana efficiency and utilization
pet placement
optimal shot rotation
ideal CC for given mobs and/or players
sting drain counters
then when you get into gear sets for reflective talent specs it gets more compicated.
I think it’s utterly hilarous that people disrespect an entire class, and one that is actually much more sophisticated and cunning than many of the other classes in the game.
additionally we have the ability to do some (although meager) melee (with SURV) but are a mana-buster class; we’re unique and extremely versatile. People who dislike hunters automatically get labeled as neanderthals who picked a less sophisticated class than hunter and people who disregard all the juggling hunters engage in.
if any class should be considered “full of tards” a warrior class (duh, rage meter, duh, attack, duh) should be that.
im still trying to, wrap my head around all the awesomeness that the wotlk expan is bringing to the table
awesome new pets for hunters an awesome new abil for rogues to shift in and out of stealth hoping around behind mobs. titans grip for warriors a 2h weapon in one? EPIC! seems like, everyone is getting alot of love even the profs are getting a load of new stuff
for all those people giving alot of hate to hunters. i play all nine soon to be all ten classes. all have their pros and cons and their epic players and their tards. unless you lvl a toon in all classes you have no place to sling hate.
it will be nice to be special again as a rogue.
Cats still get Prowl and a new one.. Rake
Wasps have a nice nature/armor reduction sting
I expect to see a lot of Hyenas in the arenas.. they have a tendon rip which slows the opponent by 50%.. its like having your pet do wingclip.
Moths I believe have a sort of limited healing aura.. could be wrong about that as I didnt check it out personally yet.
Seriously, what does being a hunter have to do with your intelligence? you must be an ally
Ive recently just rolled a hunter after Wotlk Droped….i have about 7 days playin time and im lvl 54…(solo play)…Hunters are fun easy to play class if ur looking to be a decent dps for a raid and to beable to pull your own wait in the game. All classes have the retarteds and screw ups.
Hunters are an easy class to play from 1-79, but at 80 eveything changes (for all classes) you gain a variety of new skills you never used while lvling, you find that you must respec according to how you want to play to be as good as you can be. And as for the guy half way up this page, he is an idiot for saying that tanks are a simple class to play, i have a lvl 80 druid, almost full T7.5 now and my guild is currently trying to do Sarth +3, it is rediculously hard to tank this massive dragon, with lava coming from behind you which you cannot see aswell as infront of you which you cannot see cuz of the god damned dragon, also there are adds you have to watch for, there are other people you have to make sure that dont pull threat, and most of all you have to know which stats you need for which fights. Its all a pain, and thats only for tanks. I only have a druid, and shammy, but im assuming that hunters are just as difficult to play in there own way(atleast at lvl 80) because they have there own roll in the game.
Funny how people think a player’s race/class and their intelligence are somehow linked. Sure, hunters are often kids and don’t always act very bright. And sure, warlocks are almost always ***holes. And yes, priests are pretty kindhearted people most of the time. And we all know people who play as Gnomes are usually just as annoying as they look… But these are all just coincidences. ^_^
awesome graphics,also lots of changes
