Obscure But Useful Tool
Posted on September 9th, 2008 by Lawbringer under General TipsWe really do a lot of research when writing articles here at DYS. Sometimes the information we would like to add to an article just doesn’t exist, which means that the facts have to come from in-game analysis. As you can probably figure, that can take a lot of time.
I recently had the idea based on a comment on the article about how soon will you be replacing gear after WotLK on a peice about farming honor gear. It turns out there really isn’t a succinct guide for that anywhere so I have been forced to grind it out myself to put it into a readable and reasonably usable formulation for our readers. And it’s going to take me a month of working at it a few hours a day. You see, I just won’t put anything up here unless I’m certain that it is as factual and accurate as I can possibly make it before you read it.
In this vein, there used to be a really neat tool at Alakazam where you could look at all the different builds for all the classes and see what was the most popular. When they changed their site format it just dissapeared, completely killing a terrific article I had already written. Since that time, I have been searching for something that gives the same info, but to no avail. However, I found something that comes pretty close.
So today I just wanted to introduce you to a neat little blog site you’ve probably never heard of. I found it while browsing through the Wow wiki via a relatively obscure link on a build page, and it has maybe 90% of the info I used to use. It may come in handy from time to time for you if you like big lists of facts like I do.
The site is Armory Musings and can be found at this address: http://okoloth.blogspot.com/ This guy has written a spider script that mines information from the WoW armory, and it can really show you some nifty stats on just about everything you could ever want to know about what players really use in the game.
On the first page, you will see a series of updates (with a LOT of scrolling) that show the balance of characters on every single realm by class. While interesting, it’s not all that useful most of the time. The real data is in the specific class links at the top of the page.
You can click on any of the class names here to take you to a class-specific page with a whole lot of useful data on your class of choice. Let’s look at some of the information on the druid page.
You will see that he will break down the entire class by spec, and even give you the average stats that each spec has. It should give you an idea how you rank according to the overall averages for your class at level 70.
Next, he shows you some averages for some other specific information from the character pane including mele, defense and spell stats so you can see how your toon stacks up against all the other 70’s on all realms. He even has stats for the most popular professions and even profession combinations for all the classes listed.
But the part I really thought was cool was the next, and largest section. The big list will show you the top 5 gear choices for all level 70’s broken down by builds. He has even included the wowhead tooltip so you can hover each one and get the game tooltip, or you can click the link to go to wowhead and figure out where to go and get all this great loot.
Wondering what your Balance druid should be wearing on your wrist? Here is what the data says:
14% [Bracers of the White Stag]
followed by:
10% [Shattrath Wraps]
9% [Windhawk Bracers]
5% [Veteran's Wyrmhide Bracers]
5% [Mana Infused Wristguards]
So you can look at the choices thousands of other druids have made to determine what is easiest to get, and what may just be by far the best choice. You can see that this might be extremely useful if this is an alt, or if you just haven’t played long enough to know what all the best gear choices may be. So both noobs and pros should find this information really valuable. (You’ll have to excuse me if I didn’t include all the HTML for the tooltips and links – that’s why I’m pointing you to the site!)
And if you’ve ever wondered exactly what gems you should be putting in all those sockets, there’s even a breakdown of the 5 most popular gem choices, which I found fascinating as well.
Again, he breaks this down according to base talent builds, which should take any guesswork out of selecting the right gems for your build choice.
Overall, I love the information at armory musings. There are other things I would like to see added to the data. And, of course, a blog format makes it pretty difficult to present these types of tables, so the presentation is a little sketchy at times. But overall it will be a site I visit fairly often when I start working on end-game spec and gear for all those new toons I have hitting 70 with the refer a friend program. I sure don’t want a pro inspecting my gear and giving me the loser chant.
You should be able to tweak your overall knowledge of any class in the game at armory musings based on great breakdowns of an absolute avalanche of data directly from the armory. It’s a great resource to use and a tool that just might help you put the final touches on your toon of any class to go Dominate!

Thanks for the pointer to the site. Excellent information resource!
wow this is cool, i found a guide for my priest on getting average gear. “shadowpriest.com” which is ahndy but only limited, this is very useful. also allowed me to brag to my friends about how i have gear on my 70s in the top uses whereas they have random wierd ones which are no way as good but they say are ^^. its a pride thing yeah?….
that wow-loot site is really nice, class spec gear is very handy and easy to read. Thankx!
http://www.wow-loot.com is a site that is only good if you are leveling your character and need to know what gears you want to be wearing BEFORE RAIDING. It will not mean you can do awesome dps. It is more of a set your dreams realisticly sort of thing. But it is a better way than using this okoloth site.
Dermie, what is your WoW character’s name, if you don’t mind my asking? Thanks!
It is Dermie.
lvl 70 warlock raiding BT.
It is not the best geared. But it gives me enjoyment to play it, which is what it is all about.
Thanks again Lawbringer for this article.

I would agree with Dermie in that I figure I am too far behind the power curve in BC to “dominate” anything now – I’m in SSC – but WotLK gives everyone a new start. If I can be prepped before the expansion comes out and then blow through to lvl 80 as fast as possible, I will be relatively “on par” with the current top dogs. True, they will replace their gear much later than I will, but as new 80s we will all be wearing the same sort of gear, and all starting the same 1-week-reset instances. Others will beat me to 80. Others will grind their rep out faster than I do. Others will get keyed faster than me. I just don’t have the time to dedicate myself to the game 10 hours a day (or more).
But… If DYS can tell me things like “gather herbs NOW” so that I am fully prepped to level up to 375 in Inscription, that gives me a leg up. If I know where to go, where to grind, what quests give me the things I need most to get to the 1-week-reset instances, THAT is what I need. What I can I be doing now to have a headstart/jumpstart on the others when WotLK comes out? I’ve followed your advice and I am buying all the cheap herbs on the AH I can, and I’m leveling up a new Herbalist. But how much of which herbs do I need to level up inscription? I’m not worried about having wasted herbs as I will sell them, but if, as I’ve read, inscription will come out in a patch BEFORE WotLK, then how much should I set aside for my DK so I have what I need when he is available? Selling the first week after the patch with inscription will get me the most gold while the rest of the server scrambles to catch up, but I don’t want to sell herbs I need and I don’t want to save herbs I don’t need. Can you give me a “guaranteed to hit 375″ list of herbs for inscription? How about the most efficient path to the end game instances? How about a most intelligent path/priority for reputations? I spent a lot of time getting my rep up with Kurenai, Sporeggar, and Honor Hold when I should have skipped those and worked on Lower City, Sha’tar, and Scryers/Aldor. I also figured out too late that there is a much “better” way to get Honor Hold rep than what I did: i.e. save all your quest turn ins until after you hit Honored from killing Shattered Hands mobs (to Friendly) and then running Ramparts/Blood Furnace to Honored. The approx. 13,000 rep you get from turning in all 54 quests (or so) in HH would be an almost free bump to Revered. True, you would not have the free gear upgrades from the first quests, but my point is it would have been great to have known that there was a smart way to level from 60-62/63 that would give me a lot of extra rep while still giving me the xp and gear.
Can you give us this stuff for WotLK? How do I get to end-game instances (1 week reset instances) the fastest? How can I get to 80 while maximizing my gear/xp/rep? What should I wait to worry about until I am 80, and what should I worry about while I am leveling to 80? How much gold should I save? How much of each herb should I save for Inscription on my own DK so I can sell the rest? Etc.
Leeroi & Dermie need to get out more, or get their own information and start their own blogging site together. <3
lol – my problem is that I DO get out more…. That is why I am looking for Gavin, Lawbringer, et al, to play like fiends and tell me what mistakes to avoid, what efficiencies to use, etc., for the limited time I get to play. Some have read my post as a bash, but it is not. I am merely agreeing with Dermie (who also was not bashing, imho) that for “dominating”, I am looking for a different type of information. I added the “teenage girl freaking out” part as expressing my own hopes for Gavin & Co to keep me from wasting time once WotLK comes out.
Leeroi-
i read that like it was a teenage girl freaking out
not that i’m saying you’re a teenage girl.. or that you are wrong. i just thought it was funny. AND you figured out a lot more than I did towards end game stuff in BC
I never really paid attention to any of that… i just like to kill stuff without being killed first. Anyways.. good points and i agree with a lot of them.
lol – when I figured out how worthless my hours of grinding rep had been, I said some decidedly un-teenage girl things…. It is a game, and I enjoy the game, but parts of it are more fun than others. I do the boring parts to better enjoy the fun parts and to support my guildmates as they try to excel in the fun parts as well. It was just a real pisser to find out that I did everything backasswards in Honor Hold and ended up costing me hours more later as I made up the lost rep.
I have to agree with Dermie, recent articles have been a bit hit and miss, especially the “advert” for that Fang gamepad thing, that was poor. I haven’t been a subsciber for long, but I’ve noticed the articles are getting considerably less useful. “The how soon will I replace my gear?” post was informative and handy, but this post, the above mentioned post and the “Your going to get your ass kicked for a while in PvP” post were not helpful in any real sense. If you’ve made it to 70 and you can’t work out what gear your character needs, then frankly your beyond the help of any type of blog.
Incidentally, as I don’t like to criticise without at least attempting to help people out, I would like to recommend to you and your readers a mod called RatingsBuster. It attaches a small section to the bottom of loot windows telling you how a piece of gear compares to the gear your currently wearing. It also helpfully converts crit rating, hit rating and so on into % chances based on your level. Its well worth a look for gear comparisons. Works well with another addon called EquipCompare which brings up a small box next to any gear your looking at with the piece of gear your currently wearing in. Very helpful for comparing stats without messing about looking in your bags or on your character sheet.
Keep up the good work, and here’s hoping for a flagrant WotLK specualtion article!
So, you really mean to say this with a straight face?
“If you’ve made it to 70 and you can’t work out what gear your character needs, then frankly your beyond the help of any type of blog.”
And then follow that with:
“I would like to recommend to you and your readers a mod called RatingsBuster. It attaches a small section to the bottom of loot windows telling you how a piece of gear compares to the gear your currently wearing.”
So you’re level 70 AND you still use Ratingsbuster, but you KNOW already what gear you character needs? Talk about speaking out of both sides of your mouth.
Allow me to elaborate. I do still use RatingsBuster but I use it to differentiate between 2 pieces of similar gear without having to mess round doing calculations in my head.
When I made reference to people being beyond help, I was thinking more specifically of the several players I’ve seen who stack entirely the wrong stats for their class. I have (on more than one occasion) seen hunters using throwing weapons, or wearing the +spell dmg helm from the Teron Gorefiend questline (the name of the questline escapes me at the moment). I’ll admit that I was maybe a bit general with that statement, sorry to anyone who was offended.
The information on this page has not been updated since Nov 2007. That’s almost a year ago. ???
Just a little something for all of you guys asking about posts regarding end-game WotLK content…that would be very difficult for anyone to give ATM because in Beta the cap lvl is currently set to 77. So unfortunately it will still be a while in coming.
As for now if they put out what you consider a subpar article skip it. Someone elses opinion may be different and if one person gets something useful out of it wasn’t it worth the effort after all?
As far as this and some other recent posts go, I must admit that I was a little disdapointed when I found the content on Okoloth a year out of date but it was non-the less an interesting read. Some of the articles have gotten away from what we are use to from the fine men and women at DYS, but lets not forget they are working to get us all the can on current and future information on WoW. Maybe the oft hinted at soon to be released levling guide will put alot of the unrulyness to rest eh?
Back to the WotLK..you guys are gonna love the DK
Peace
As was said before, that site might have been useful for me a year ago. Heck, 8 months ago, even, since I got my Paladin to 70 only on this side of new years…. since then, I’ve been with my guilds’ first kills ever since the Lurker in SSC, and we’re now midways through P2 of Illidan in Black Temple. Yep, both T5 and one T6 dungeon cleared in under 9 months. And that’s with only two raids per week, and 3 from about 1st April.
The gear suggested for my Paladin, would completely nerf me down to Gruul level again, it wouldn’t be something I would want to aim for at all. There’s no Sunwell-badge items, no T6 on that site. “last updated november 2007″ really says it all.
I can understand some people would enjoy PvP, but for me, reading those posts are a waste of time. I simply don’t enjoy PvP. But you’ve had some great articles about other things here, the Herbalism one as the latest…. also about taking your lvl70 in to a lowlevel dungeon to farm for gold and others…. good stuff those, even for a PvP-disliker like me.
But THIS post, was very disappointing. Sorry, mate, but the site simply doesn’t live up to my expectations.
Gav,
Advice is like prison sex; not always something you’re willing to take, yet everyone has some for you…
Too subtle? Well then….
For those of you like Doc who have higher expectations for this site, then prospect to become a writer for Gavin while you’re still smarter than the rest of us…
Personally I don’t get to raid 4 times a week, have no idea what a T5 or 6 piece of gear looks like; have never been to Sunwell, Black Temple or even ZA (whatever that is) simply because I am too busy being a grown up person earning a living.
In short that means that I am grateful for any information Gavin and crew have to impart, even if I don’t always understand it. If all it teaches me is that its pointless levelling a rogue or a hunter because there’s already so many on every server that no one will want u in their group, then I am happy.
p.s. Gavin, why didn’t you tell me that no one will want a 70 semi-geared hunter before I spent 7 months levelling her? Oh well – fun to shoot stuff anyway.
My apologies to all those serious players who think I should just buy an X-box, but WoW is such an awesome game, and even though I will never be able to raid properly or gain the satisfaction of end game content like you will, I still prefer it to all the CS and Grand Turismo copy games out there that will never reach the depth of this great game.
Cheers,
Onesadlymisinformedindividual
Man that is a perfectly perfect way to play. You dont need to raid to experience the game. But what we are saying is a site that was updated over a year ago is not worth looking at. There are better sites out there to get research from and when the article starts with “We really do a lot of research when writing articles here at DYS”, you start to figure that a general look around the web will find something better. We all like gavin’s tips because they can help or sometimes just show us that we are doing the right thing. Whether you be someone who just hit 70 or someone in SWP. It may sound like abuse that we deal out but it is more intended as advice/constructive criticsm. Though when someone is disappointed or frustrated they tend to say things out of spite.
I must apologise my first post did sound very childlike. But i would like to ask that the articles please be brought up a notch and start catering to what the readers truly need.
You see, here’s the real problem with writing any type of article you guys have mentioned; there are still going to be some people who hate it. Frankly you simply cannot please everyone all of the time.
I said the site was interesting, probably more so for those people who are not progressed into T5 (which I specifically mentioned when I said it would be useful for new players or gearing alts without having to look at every site in the world to make gear choices.) Honestly, I seriously think that you guys don’t really read the posts well enough to absorb the message anyway, or maybe you have comprehension issues.
If we did a lot of WotLK speculation posts, they would be wrong and outdated in a month even in the Beta – so that’s out. If we talk about high-end arena play a bunch of people gripe. If we talk about things that help new players out then suddenly we are “not living up to our ‘previous’ high standards” or “dissapointing” you REAL pros. If I did an article about leveling from 40-50 that would get trashed as “if you can’t figure out how to get 10 levels just quit wow.”
The point is – if you don’t like THIS article, that doesn’t mean anyone has lost their head here. We have to take the approach that some will, some won’t, so what, who’s next? I figure no matter what we write about, about 60% of our readers will find something useful, and 40% will not. Some of that 40% always complains, that’s life, but we keep moving forward. Oddly enough, some of that 40% will be in the 60% on the very next article.
So relax, we’ll write about something YOU like later.
