First Impressions - Death Knight
Posted on August 17th, 2008 by Gavin under General Tips, World of WarcraftIn a word, “bad.” These guys are tough, strong, plate wearing, killing machines. It’s almost unfair to every other class in the game. You could think of them as Warlock/Mage/Warrior/Rogues. Warcraft’s first hero class is simply Dominating.
Lawbringer and I both got our beta keys the other night and began our run through the beta. Now, no WotLK run would be quite the same without at least giving all the other classes a shot. The new talent tabs are just too tempting and we certainly want to keep everyone up to date on how the traditional classes will fare - but playing a Death Knight is awesome.
Let me just say Blizzard did not disappoint, especially in the starting area. For those of you who have strong moral biases, you might find the quest line dialogue a bit dark and disturbing at first. Aligning yourself with the most evil guy in the game, Arthas, and some of the quest objectives are pretty grim. But there is a bit of redemption in the end.
I don’t want to give too much away, but if you can get past the basic premise of slaughtering people without qualm for a couple of hours, you’re going to have a ton of fun with your first Death Knight.
Let’s start with the bits that relate to game mechanics before we get to the DK’s themselves. Blizzard did some things with the starting area that are really brilliant. The quest lines are linked very well, and guide you through the starting zone in a very linear fashion. You don’t have to run all over the place, so your first three levels go very fast. You can reasonably do 55-57 in under 3 hours even your first time through.
As you begin, you notice a few things different about quest mechanics for the DK. Quest tools are quite often placed on a special action bar that takes a little getting used to. When you do the mount quest, there is a special button you need to press to turn in the quest, which can be confusing for about 15 seconds while you wonder what in the heck you have to do to get the yellow turn in question mark from the NPC. But once you get conditioned to pay attention to these special action buttons, it actually makes it easier than ever to figure out exactly what you’re supposed to be doing.
Next, you get to do a whole pile of really nifty quest types. You loot, kill, strafe, bomb, cannoneer, hide in two different costumes, pillage, crush and steal your way through a wide variety of things that are just plain fun. Yes, the text is evil and a bit disturbing at times, but the chains are anything but dull.
The biggest change is that all of the quest loops are instanced. It’s a little hard to describe. Think of the DK starting area as five different zones, even though they are all in the same place. Once you complete the first set of quests, everything in the zone changes for you. The mobs are different, the NPC’s have moved, and the action shifts to the new quest line - but only for you and everyone else who is in that set of quests. It’s fabulous. You don’t have to run to a completely new area to do new content, the content just changes depending on your progression.
It’s wierd at first, since the zone chat will have people asking about the first quest line while you are in the exact same spot working on something completely different and you can’t see them even though they may be only a few yards away. But it’s nice that there aren’t a half a billion other DK’s competing for the same mobs and NPC’s since they can be seperated into five different instances of the same area.
By instancing the quest lines, Blizz solved the problem of congestion, as well as making the story line much more engaging. There is a terrific flow to the story and it will make the question of “why are we all going to Northrend?” make a lot more sense.
As for the DK, I really don’t even know where to start. There’s enough new information in just a few hours of play to do 20 articles about these dudes. And so much of the initial experience raises even more questions than answers about how they fit into the overall scheme of PvE, PVP, and raiding. But I’ll give you some sweet little observations this time around.
DK’s operate on the Runic Power system instead of mana, rage or energy. But Runic Power works a bit like all of them. Like rage, you gain runic power by mele strikes. Like mana, you use runic power to cast some spells, although certain spells generate runic power. It is actually difficult to run out of runic power if you are fighting pretty regularly. That’s where the DK class has an advantage over all the other systems.
If you are low on RP, you aren’t in trouble, and you don’t have to stop using spells. You can just cast a few spells, which do damage to mobs and even healing to yourself to get more runic power and then it’s back to busting heads. It’s a little like life tap for a lock, except you gain power without losing anything in the process. Talk about a dominating advantage. It’s hard to say anything but WOW once you see it in action for yourself. You begin to feel invincible.
But runes go beyond the power bar. You also have two each of blood, frost and unholy runes as well as a fourth proc rune called a death rune. These runes are seperate from the power system and have a more traditional cooldown system. Talents in all three trees buff these runes with things like instant cooldowns on critical strikes and other things that will take a lot more play to figure out completely, but I don’t think it will be ferociously complex.
As for the other little tidbits that are completly unique to the DK’s, the starting city is a huge floating ziggurat above the far eastern borders of the Eastern PLagulands, and it is really super cool. Check out our shot of the Ebon Hold below.

To get you geared and talented up before you leave the starting area, most of the quests have a nice blue item and bonus talent points as rewards. By the time you finish the starting area, you have a complete set of blues and 49 talent points in your tree of choice, as well as four runeforge spells to put on your weapon/weapons.
It’s too early for me to tell just how well a DK will tank and DPS. I can see them being very hard to defeat in arenas, but I can’t see them being a true MT based on what we see from the talent trees alone. I’m not so sure they will be able to out-DPS a well geared lock or mage, and even though many of their diseases heal them, they may still need a healer from time to time. It’s just too early to tell.
I don’t think they make every other class unnecessary by any means, but so many of their talents point to raid resistances, buffs and damage increases that I can certainly see a 5 man group wanting one DK from each tree for an instance run. I’m sure the WoW comminuty and DYS will work out all the details for how the DK class really fits into the grand scheme of things soon - I mean, that’s our job right?
So even though I don’t have time, space or all the knowledge yet to tell you everything there is to know about playing a DK you can be certain that you will be impressed. The starting zone is unique, the game mechanics smooth and entertaining, and the class is nearly ridiculously powered. You get great gear and talents uber fast, and it doesn’t take forever to get ready to roll in outlands and beyond.
My advice, get WotLK the first day out and we’ll certainly get you ready ahead of time to go out on your deathcharger and Dominate!

HOW AWESOME IS THE RP EVENT AT LIGHTS HOPE CHAPEL!!!!!! OMFG
WAY WAY WAY AWESOME!
That was a good post keep them comeing is it true that you can just create a death knight and not have to make your character into one.
You can make a death knight as long as you have one character over level 55. You do not have to convert that one character, you just need a character at that level to be able to start a death knight.
Yes - your Death Knight (you can have one per account, if I remember correctly) is a new character that starts at level 55. You must have a character of level 55 or higher in order to roll one.
You don’t have to turn an existing character into a Death Knight.
Yah Gavin im pretty sure is one per realm per account so u can have los od deathknights but each on its own realm:)
problem is, you have to have a character above 55 ON THE REALM THAT YOUR GOING TO ROLL ON. You can’t roll a death knight on another server, has to be on the one you have the 55+ on.
So if you have a level 55 and you roll a DK, is the DK the same faction as your 55 or are DK’s separate from horde/alliance?
i believe that on a PvE server the deathknight can be either faction but on a PvP server it must be on the same faction as ur 55+. Im not 100% sure about that though
no u can have 1 deathknight per realm, so u could i have 1 on aerie peak and 1 on everyother realm
Actually, not one DK per account, its one DK per realm with a char over 55.
Wow Great article, cant wait to get my first death knight, should have signed up for the beta.
well i know DK’s look awsome but been keeping track of them since i’m super excited to play one. Most of testers who are 77(which is cap i think) have said ” from 55-70 DK’s are overpowered, but balance out once you in outland. This is do to DK armor they get which is equivilant of tier 2 or 3 ” is why are or seem so bad ass. One pvp vid i saw showed them in action and all i can say is… good luck killing anyone can snare you.
Gavin
I am so stoked about this! I was picked for the beta test and owe it all to your post, my son too. We have played for a bit and I am up to 57 now I an curious about the glyphs tab and how do you convert your regular player over to a Death Knight? So far I have just moved a copy to that realm but he is only 62 (one of the original ones that moved with you to the new realm Maiev and joined your guild)
Aha, still waiting on my key, chances look slim for me getting one, I actually think you can have 1 death knight per server per level 55 (so if you have 3 level 55+’s you can have 3 death knights on different servers…) I could be wrong though
after looking at the new Mage talents i’d say a mage is gonna own in raids and inctances if they are fire also would i have to sacrifice a lvl 70 to create my death knight?
1 DK per account
my one questing is .. can you use flying mounts in pre bc area’s yet or is blizz still not budging on the idea ? lol
What gear does a DK start out with? I’ve been wondering about this ever since I heard they start at level 55.
i wish i got my beta key… i signed up the day you could… but i doubt i will get one. is it if you have played for longer you will have a better chance or something? because i have 7 level 70’s and still no luck on a beta key
I’m about 9000% sure that that’s not going to happen…I could just see a bunch of level 80s mounting fly assaults on Org or Stormwind if that happened -_- or…hunters in STV with tracking… /shudder
@Tiamus…Blizzard has stated that you can still only have 10 characters per server…so if you’re already at max on your server then say goodbye to an alt.
im not worried about losing an alt i just dont want to lose my 70 mage or hunter
*sigh* reading articles like this just kind of disappoints me in blizzard. Yes, DK’s will be awesome, and they will be nerfed before the xpac, that’s not the problem.
About three weeks to a month ago I was selected as one of the people to get beta keys from the curse.com/WoWI contests, basically for interface addon creators…
Still waiting, still no key, and apparently there’s nothing i can do about not getting a key.
To be honest, although this article is helpful, there is absolutely no way to prepare for the expansion at all except to play it, and for a lot of people, they can’t, often because of blizzard incompetence.
Tiamus, Death knights do not remove any of your current characters (unless you delete one to make room for a tenth character (assuming the death knight is going to be your tenth)) The only requirement CURRENTLY for a death knight is to have a level 55, then you can create a new character of the death knight persuasion.
well thats great to hear
My main is a mage with nice gear but since videos of gameplay bout the DK cames out im starting to be confused rather if i would jump in northrend with my mage or start a DK…i duno if it worth to start at 55 and do OL all over again
I can’t wait to have my own DK!
all 3 talent trees are nice, I’m thinking Unholy now, we’ll see how it turns out.
DK or lvl80…. I can’t decide….
Nyan,
I’m playing Unholy right now, and it’s really nice. You can get a pet ghoul that stays with you permanently (instead of despawning after a couple minutes), and you can control it like a Hunter pet. It can’t hold aggro, but DKs don’t really need anything to tank for them… it’s just extra DPS.
As far as i know - and it could have changed since i read it on the official blizzard WotLK site (but i dont see why it would have changed), You can make 1 DK per account PER realm! which means that you may have 1 death knight on your account per realm- so if you play across 3 different realms and each have a level 55+ you may make up to 3 DK’s (not all on the same realm though). please tell me if it has been chnaged since then.
As I understood it, that’s how it is going to be.
Grabbed this from WoW Wiki
“Accounts will be limited to one death knight per realm and can make them on any server, even servers where you have no characters. PvP servers are still limited by faction (i.e. if you have an Alliance character on a PvP server, you cannot make a Horde death knight on that PvP server).”
on youtube theres a movie that shows u not a whole lot wat he juyst said but its called tales of a deathknight
So if I were to have a character lvl 55 or higher I can make an instant 55 death knight out of doing a quest? That’s what I’ve heard.
no quest
My cousin say you only need one lvl 55 character on ANY realm, then you can make one Death Knight per realm even though you dont have any lvl 55 on that realm (and i really hope is true).
Was kinda hoping they might do a lttle something for holy Priest to increase survivability…
but I guess it’s all about DK’s ftm…
I still prefer the traditional Classes and shake my head at Blizz ’supertoons’
I also think there should have been an EXTREMELY higher price to pay for a DK…
Like sacking a 70…
Obvious…you just went from a living breathing character into the service of the Lich King based upon promises of supreme power…you’re now undead, or close to it…you would need to relearn a lot…so you lose 15 lvls…no biggy…especially considering we almost all have a 70 or more we never even play anymore.
OK - to clear a few things up once and for all:
1. You do NOT have to give up one of your 70’s to have a Death Knight. As long as you have at least one level 55 toon on any server on your account you will have the option to create a FREE and NEW toon as a Death Knight.
2 You can have more than one Death Knight on your account. But not more than one Death Knight on each server. You can have one Death Knight per server.
3. It does look like Death Knights balance out with the other classes beginning around level 75 or so. They are initially very OP in their own starting zone, but it does seem to be gear and initial talent related and doesn’t last forever. This is basically to take some of the pain out of leveling them from 55-70 so that you can get to Northrend as quickly as possible. But come on, they could have made you start at level 1!
4. The old world will stay a ‘no flying’ zone. In the expansion there will be no flying mounts until after level 77 or so. You will be grounded until then, and must complete a quest chain to unlock flying mounts again for Northrend.
5. Northrend is a BLAST! The quests are fun, the rewards are great and there is never a dull moment. Of course, a whole bunch of thing aren’t working yet. Only a few professions are open to Grand Master training up to level 450, many of the NPC’s are still buggy, and the respawn rates are wicked fast, but it’s super fun, you guys are going to love the xpac!
I found this video on youtube of 5 DKs running Hellfire Ramparts in the Beta, thought some of you might be intersted in watching it, I found it entertaining.

Hi Gavin et al,
I hope you can answer this. It hasn’t been answered yet.
Do I need to delete a toon to make room for it on my server? I have 10 already . . (I’m assuming yes
also, I understand any race can be a DK? True? Same racial talents? Any advice as to what race a DK should be??
Thanks!!!!!!
-Matt
Can’t wait
though i have to get from lvl 8 to 55 at least before then.. might be pushuing it with as much time as i get to play…
Matt
(I know him not Gavin or Lawbringer but i think i can answer these questions)
Yes you’ll have to delete a toon, as of now the 10 character cap still applies.
Yes any race and sex can be a death knight and yes same racials still apply, (I cant really tell you what racial is the best…)
I know I’m*
Wait until you see your first Gnome Death Knight with pink pigtails… too funny!
Awesome thanks Leif!
So people who are reading this:
I’ve been thinking of making my DK the OPPOSITE faction (pve server)! Why? Easy way to get one to 70 fast, and ’see the other cities’. That way, both can do dailies. Will make northrend (the pvp zone) quite interesting. Also, on my server, one side is very very very outnumbered. What’s that they say, if you can’t beat ‘em, join em?
er, sorry . . .Lief!
when is the xpac due out?
11/3/08 is what gamestop says!
blizz might have actually designed it so shamans cant just steamroll over all other classes. boo hoo. actualy, the mechanics seems simalar to my shammys.
what im wondering is will people lvl to 80 first or roll out thier DK
Im considering going horde, but on a completely different no name server with some friends, I think it would be enjoyable
I’m not sure if this comment will make any difference to anyone’s oppinions or not…but….. here goes.
You probably shouldnt make a DK as soon as xpac comes out - because think of all the people that will, within 1st hour of xpac release there will be MILLIONS of DK’s out there farming those mobs. yes the instancing explained in the article will help a whole lot - but it cant eliminate it… also - if you can pvp in the starting zone - imagine all the ganks! i guess this is why they made DK’s so strong to get outta there asap.
anyways i hope ive changed some people’s opinion so when im LFG a couple weeks after xpack all i can find are DK tanks.
Good points… but I forgot to mention in the article that the starting areas for Horde races and Alliance races are instanced separately. If you’re an Orc, you never see a Night Elf, Gnome, or Dwarf while you’re doing the starting area.
After the final event is done, you get teleported back to the “real” (uninstanced) Ebon Hold with all the races, but it’s a Sanctuary (like Shattrath)
-Gavin
Just got my Beta key
All i have to say is if everyone rerolls a new character and goes out to fill it with bags thats alot of bags to fill. hope you got yours early.
