Dominating Equipment – Headphones
Posted on August 8th, 2008 by Lawbringer under General Tips, World of WarcraftThere is a real void in the marketplace for high quality gaming headsets. You can count the number of decent sets on one hand. You can find great audio headsets in the hundreds. You can get single ear headsets with terrific microphones all over the place as well. We’re not sure why it’s so hard to find a headset with 5.1 stereo sound AND a good noise canceling mic at the same time, but that’s just the way it is right now.
There are certainly a big pile of products out there that CLAIM to be both of these things, but you know someone is lying to you if they are trying to tell you that their headphones have great sound and uber features for $29.95, that’s ridiculous. I guess some companies have not quite figured out that lying to their customers just doesn’t = win in the long run.
If you’re cheap, just stop reading this right now. Stick with your Wal-Mart Logitech earbuds and forget you ever saw this post. (Logitech makes great mice, but the headphones – not so much). I’m not cheap, and I’ll tell you why.
There are certain things you should spend really good money on. We (should) spend 25% of our lives in bed sleeping, you should spend some serious dough on a really good bed. You spend a good majority of your time wearing shoes, those should be very comfortable and high quality (this applies to all clothing really, but especially to shoes in my book). Life is too short to eat yucky food, and so forth. So I typically default to “you get what you pay for.” Spend a little more on most things and you will be much happier with the results.
I mean, how many times have you gone to a restaurant like Village Inn or some huge chain thing and gotten horrid food with really bad service? Go down the street to the more expensive place and the food will be spectacular and the waitress will be awesome – it’s worth it to me.
It’s the same thing for me with headphones. If I’m going to be wearing something for 8 hours every night they are going to have to be comfortable and sound good. And since I use Skype and Vent a lot the mic needs to be out of the way and work well.
I’ve had headphones that sound great but hurt my ears. Microphone booms that rub on my face and I can’t get into a position that feels right where people can still hear me. Comfortable headphones with crummy quality sound, headphones with bad connectors, you name it. There was always something majorly wrong with every single combo headset I ever used or reviewed.
I finally had enough with all of it and went on a major search for a real quality gaming headset. I even looked at aviation headsets, although the sound quality and connection to computer seemed iffy on those (as well as costing up to $750.00) . I just wanted something good, and I wasn’t too worried about what it cost.
Some of the gaming headsets seemed a bit gadgety to me. The rumble feature doesn’t seem to be as important as really clear sound and comfort. So I looked at the offerings from one of the most trusted names in quality audio headphones – Sennheiser.
Sennheiser has always been a good choice for the audiophile. Not the very best, but certainly always mentioned with the best. It’s hard to beat Sennheiser for quality as well. Everything they make is solid, both in performance and construction.
Enter the PC 350 gaming Headset. These babies were only recently released, or I would have been using them for months already. From the moment you pull them out of the box, you can just tell you’re ears are going to thank you for them.
Everything about the PC 350’s is just right. They are probably the most comfortable headphones you will ever own at this price, and you can wear them forever. The sound is great, even if you have to tweak your levels a bit through your sound card interface. Some reviewers have complained about the bass level, but honestly, when have ANY headphones been able to really thump? If you have a decent sound card you can add some nice sounding bass boost to the sound and I actually had to turn the bass boost down for the PC 350’s. In other words, they can handle whatever you throw at them.
The mic is out of the way, doesn’t pick up ambient sounds, and yet still gives great voice clarity in every situation I’ve used it. It’s not all up in my face either (you can tell I have personal space issues). In other words, everything about these headphones is what you’ve always wanted. I mean, the cord is even 9 feet long! The picture above does not do them nearly enough justice.
These are going to set you back a bit more than $150.00, but when you are ready for a serious upgrade in your sound and voice environment, go grab a set of PC 350’s, you’ll never settle for a lesser gaming headpiece again. All you need to do is click the picture to get your own pair from Amazon.

Did you try the Plantronics headsets. I have had several versions of the full ear with microphone headset and all have been very comfortable with good sound. Just wondered how they compare to these.
I use Plantronic’s too, took a little bit to get used to the way they go on your head but they’re really comphortable, $60 (AU) and the mic quality seems to be really good (though i don’t use it much, i use a desk mic cause i have 5.1 desktop speakers that take up the plugs in my soundcard so the mic has to be USB or i can’t have them both pluggeed in at the same time). Are that ANY mic’s on the market that the mic doesnt start falling down from the top position with some movement after some time? i’ve been though about 5 and after a few weeks of moving the mic up after use, and down during raids they all start becoming weak at the joint and just fall down….
Shows how sad i am,
I found a great sound headset, found a great mic, so i did a little playing, and well i now got a great headset and mic all on my head
total cost,
and sounds great)
sound headset, £10
mic set, £1 (cheap but ebay
+ some glue and tape
total cost £11, ~$25 at the time
but i dont think any one can do that
I have $250 Sennheiser headphones that i use to listen to music both on the go and on my computer and they are about as good as things get unless you move up to the studio quality ones. I also have this $40 Logitech headset which is also pretty dam good. The sound quality isn’t as nice but the difference is so small that you cant really tell the difference when using it normally (like WoW ambient sounds and vent etc). You really have to crank up the bass for the quality to deteriorate but the mic is top notch. Mics being able to block out ambient sound shouldnt be a problem because you should be using “Push to talk” when using vent so you’ll only be transmitting in rather short bursts.
All im trying to say is if you only want a headset for WoW purposes such as using Vent for pvp etc then a simple headset around $50 is enough. If you want an awesome sound system for both music & WoW then by all means buy the Sennheiser because they are simply the best when you compare the cost and quality.
I use -Plantronics DSP-500 Headset-.
They are very comfy. Very comfy indeed. the sound has a good enough quality for what i use it for, a lot of the time i even turn up the sound and use it instead of my main speakers.
I’ve lastely never had any problems with the mic. It moves into position nicily and isn’t about to break like so many others due to over bending. It’s got nice long cable as well which makes me happy!
It has got extras like it’s own sound card or something but i don’t really care about extras. All in all they cost my just under £25, under $50 i guess.

Enjoy
lawl I can barely afford wow every month, I’m using a cheap set of labtech speakers and a cheap labtech mic.
makes me sound a lot older than I am but it works and no lag time so meh
btw I’m 14 with no allowance, I have to scrape by
Way too expensive. I use a pair of 10 dollar walmart speakers. Wish i had my old headset for those… more personal times.
I HAD a headset that costed me 80 bucks but i kept chewing on it so it broke D:
yeah i did logitech but the cords kept breaking then i went a step up to platonic ( with warranty) and they are awesomeness note i am a devout logitech person normally i got a g – 15 keyboard ( old version) and a logitech mouse getting the mx evolution in a couple of weeks
Ok I understand saving money. I’m there so that is why I am so charged with my Plantroniks 570 DPS set that I got for $40 at Best Buy. Now normally they are like $80.00 but I did some shopping around and got them on sale with a Best Buy gift card that had like 15 bucks on it.
A mate of mine really suggested getting a steelseries headset…forgot the name but it costs approximately $140 (Aussie dollars) and ill prob get them sometimes this week. We both play css so good headsets help, apparently he can hear the opposite team buying their weapons each round…
God forbid someone start shooting above your head: you’ll go deaf!
i got a pair of cyber acoustics headset and i like them, cheap, sounds good, everyone i talk to on wow says they sound like a high dollar set of phones and mic. i guess the only thing im missing is the 9foot cable, i think i paid like 30.00 us. for mine.
Steelseries headsets are designed for gaming. More for CS than WoW, but they are excellent. I have gone through about 5 pairs of various plantronics models, and this steelseries headset is by far the best one i have had yet.

A couple of suggestions for those in Australia looking for good headsets.
Razer Piranha Gaming Headphones, size adjustable, noise filtering microphone, adjustable earphones, in-line volume control. Both with 3.5mm and USB. Retails for about $85AU
Or the Logitech ClearChat Pro USB PC headset. Soft, padded headband and earcups. Laser-tuned speaker drivers and a powerful one-touch equalizer enhance PC calling, music, movie or gaming experience. The adjustable, noise-cancelling microphone assures clear communication and glows softly when muted. Retails for about $80AU
I use a Logitech headset and love it – but I would echo Gavin point in that the $20 and $30 (US) headsets were junk, died right away, had problems with the connections (the USB converter did not work), etc. Jumping up a big $20 to the $50 headset made all the difference in the world. The difference between the $30 and $50 headsets, even though made by the same company, is amazing.
From most peoples comments, it seems -Plantronics- is a good brand to look at when buying a headset. They may not ultimately be the best, but you get a headset with a fairly high quality for a reasonably low cost of around $50.
If you are going to be using a headset all the time and you want top quality, the headset Lawbringer suggests is most likily going to be a great choice, but note that you are going to be paying extra for that quality.
check your sound cards, couple of people have said that they have 5.1 plugged into a card that supports 5.1 but they havnt got any room for a mic.
there should be a line in port on the card also, normally blue, mic goes in there
Headsets are over rated.
ya they halp u talk and do stuf soundwise better. but wats is the point its a waist of money, when the game comes with a perfacrtly good chat system1
I hate em
I use Cheap Walmart Headphone’s And with the exception of the plugs being crap there pretty good.
Now for speaker’s I have a 5.1 Altec Lansing Set that i got 8 Years ago that are still crystal clear and loaded with bass.
and for those of you who have a smaller (non existent) budget as i do, keep your eyes out. our local general store carries one headset. i fail to remember brand but it fits behind your head, is collapsable, moveable mic and on-cord volume control. it set me back a paltry 15 bucks. and as far as quality, well, let me tell you the $20+ crap from radio shack pales in comparison. i know you usually get what you pay for, but there are rare gems in the world, such as this headset.
side note
should you lose the comfy cover of your headphones, before you scrap them or raid in pain, grab a couple of (again, i fail, names are not my strong point) but i call them bathtub gaskets. they are cushiony O’s sticky on one side, and less than a buck at most hardware stores.
I’ve got a bose headphone. I think it’s pretty decent. they don’t give me a headache, and the sound isn’t that bad. As for my mic.. I’ve got a real professional mic that I use for recording my own trumpet music. It hangs from a boom between my monitor and chair. Picks up my voice beautifully if my recording programs are to be trusted.
I would love to find a good bluetooth gaming headset…i dont know how many i’ve replaced by rolling my chair over the cord over and over and over.
kick everyone out of the house and use a nice set of blaring G51’s and a desktop mic or get yourself one of these babies, Creative Fatal1ty Professional Series Gaming Headset
Long time reader, first time posting. I am already saving for the PC 350’s. I have a bonus from work coming to pay them off. I have been through to many Logitech units from Walmart, and various other retailers. With the money I have spent replacing them, (due to kids and such), I could have bought a pair already. Thank you for this article witch confirms what I have been saving and waiting for.
