I've got a bose headphone. I think it's pretty decent. they don't give me a headache, and the sound isn't that bad. As for my mic.. I've got a real professional mic that I use for recording my own trumpet music. It hangs from a boom between my monitor and chair. Picks up my voice beautifully if my recording programs are to be trusted.

and for those of you who have a smaller (non existent) budget as i do, keep your eyes out. our local general store carries one headset. i fail to remember brand but it fits behind your head, is collapsable, moveable mic and on-cord volume control. it set me back a paltry 15 bucks. and as far as quality, well, let me tell you the $20+ crap from radio shack pales in comparison. i know you usually get what you pay for, but there are rare gems in the world, such as this headset.
side note
should you lose the comfy cover of your headphones, before you scrap them or raid in pain, grab a couple of (again, i fail, names are not my strong point) but i call them bathtub gaskets. they are cushiony O's sticky on one side, and less than a buck at most hardware stores.

check your sound cards, couple of people have said that they have 5.1 plugged into a card that supports 5.1 but they havnt got any room for a mic.

there should be a line in port on the card also, normally blue, mic goes in there

From most peoples comments, it seems -Plantronics- is a good brand to look at when buying a headset. They may not ultimately be the best, but you get a headset with a fairly high quality for a reasonably low cost of around $50.

If you are going to be using a headset all the time and you want top quality, the headset Lawbringer suggests is most likily going to be a great choice, but note that you are going to be paying extra for that quality.

I use a Logitech headset and love it - but I would echo Gavin point in that the $20 and $30 (US) headsets were junk, died right away, had problems with the connections (the USB converter did not work), etc. Jumping up a big $20 to the $50 headset made all the difference in the world. The difference between the $30 and $50 headsets, even though made by the same company, is amazing.

A couple of suggestions for those in Australia looking for good headsets.

Razer Piranha Gaming Headphones, size adjustable, noise filtering microphone, adjustable earphones, in-line volume control. Both with 3.5mm and USB. Retails for about $85AU

Or the Logitech ClearChat Pro USB PC headset. Soft, padded headband and earcups. Laser-tuned speaker drivers and a powerful one-touch equalizer enhance PC calling, music, movie or gaming experience. The adjustable, noise-cancelling microphone assures clear communication and glows softly when muted. Retails for about $80AU
