Season 4 Team Tips
Posted on June 28th, 2008 by Lithanial under Efficiency Tips, General Tips, World of WarcraftArena season 4 has now officially begun on all servers, and with it the new Brutal and Guardian PvP items are now available. The big twist this season however, is that team selling has truly been stamped out and most items now require a player to have a high enough personal rating to purchase them.
The quality of the items available however is extraordinarily high; high enough to match or exceed the power of loot obtained from heroic badges and so it is well worth players to look at entering the arena in order to gear up.
Most of the items available require a personal rating of 1700 and this should be an achievable goal for many players if you enter with a favorable team setup and a solid plan. Outlined here are some basic pointers in assembling your own arena team to help you hit that 1700 target.
Which Bracket?
The first question you should ask yourself is if you want to be playing 2v2, 3v3 or 5v5 arena. It is much easier to assemble a 2v2 team but your team setup is critical to success here and this bracket allows for few mistakes. 5v5 allows a much broader range of successful team setups since each player can compensate for their teammate’s weaknesses - but it can be a large hassle to schedule times when your whole team can play.
3v3 is a comfortable medium between each bracket being both relatively simple to organize a team and allowing a reasonable variety in class composition. If you are fairly new to the arena, I would highly recommend the 3v3 bracket to you.
Forming the Team
The first thing you need to keep in mind first and foremost when forming your team is each individual’s survivability since this will have a huge impact on your tactics.
As an example, having a subtlety rogue in your team allows you to play rather offensively since he is difficult to directly attack and highly mobile, as such he will require little healing which allows him to successfully partner with a DPS class stacked team or a more offensive hybrid healer such as a moonkin or shadow priest.
In contrast a warrior has little in the way of escape measures but hits like a freight train to compensate, if he went with a fully offensive team he could easily be burned down and as such a warrior is best accompanied by a healing teammate.
By keeping in mind the survivability of your teammates you can ensure that your team composition supports each other to counter your weaknesses rather than just compounding the problems.
Making a Plan
The second most important thing in arena is to have an overall plan as to what the team strategy is to win and select classes that will accomplish that. There are several highly successful strategies common place in the arena that will work well for newcomers.
The first basic strategy is a drain team, this relies on having mana draining abilities available and in order to accomplish this you require a hunter, priest or warlock present. The main idea is to have steady damage on the opposing team to wear them down while directly attacking the enemy healers’ mana. If you can make the enemy healers run out of mana before yours do then you can easily start killing off his team mates.
A similar strategy to this is a grind style team. These teams tend to have a high number of healers accompanied by a dps class whose damage does not ever “run dry” - usually a warrior. The goal here is to be so survivable that nobody in your team can easily be killed while slowly chipping away at the enemy team until something gives way, usually the enemy healers running out of mana.
The final basic strategy is the burst team. This style of team is very risky but can be quite effective due to its instant shock value. The trick is to take 3 dps classes that can dish out horrendous damage while supporting this with a high amount of crowd control and silences. What the plan entails is to hit one person as hard as you possibly can while stopping him from being healed.
The big risk however is that if your burst does not succeed then without a healer your team will gradually be picked off, as such it is vital to pick the correct target. Attacking someone who has an escape measure such as a paladins bubble or a mages iceblock will cause your attack to fail.
Attacking a class such as a warrior or shaman however yields a high success rate.
With these simple tips you should be able to construct a strong backbone to your arena team and be ready to dominate your way to that 1700 rating target.

You know, I love WoW and can spend hours grinding BG’s with the best of them, but in my year of playing arena, I just plain suck!
This blog helps out so much - I know many people already know most of this stuff, but as an older more casual player this info really helps - thanks, and maybe I can break out of the 1200’s in 2v2 !!!! (feral drood and arcane mage - worst of the worst pairing!!)
Thanks!!!
hey feral druid and frost mage are good. lots of CC raw ap, can beat alot of teams if u guys are organised. and if u want to be good at arena make sure you study! understand your class and others go to arenajunkies.com and you’ll find how to beat certain comps and also talk alot during arena and out of it make sure you find out what went wrong and what you can do to prevent losing! also watch video’s on your classes from warcraftmovies.com and find some good players that play your class watch them study them mimic them. why? cause they are leet, get their leetness to rub off on you.
Bruce, to you your setup is completly wrong :9, try respecing frost and have your druid go resto and you’ll fly up to 1600’s 17–’s in no time.
nice love my frost mage and my rog mate in the 2v2 woop woop
These are good tips. What can you suggest for a BM hunter with vindicator gear items, and the remainder mainly blues (Beast Lord set)? I’ve never entered arena before, as I’m always too undergeared to be considered. Does this mean I should spend the 80g and make my own team?
Hey Glenno, i am a hunter and i pair with a rogue, not the best team in the world, however but it can get pretty good if you got a strategy we have made it to about 1600 rating so far as we arent the best people in arenas. h
Hope this helps.
A BM would go best with another hunter or ele/enh shammy. The main problem with having a hunter burst team (I would go marks for hunter/healer) is after a point people are just going to LOS you or wait for your Buff to run out then demolish you.
Hey i have BM hunter aswell, ive alrdy had 3 different 2v2 arena teams and 2 different 3v3 teams. Ive found that a BM hunter and a Shadow Priest work really well. but he quit cuz he didnt like the other Bm hunter in our team lol, i suck aswell my teams have never gotten over 1500, and i think thats wat u start out with lol
I Currently play with Hughsnet and so PVP is almost not possible with my toons. Arena points was the easyiest was for my level 70 toons to get gear even if i had to buy a new team when my rating got to low. But Blizzard has made it now that I have to go to a motel or a friends house with high speed just to do arena so i can win so i can get gear. It sucks that with seven 70’s i have to farm primals and nethers to get epic gear. Farming gets old fast. Thanks for your tips Gavin makes farming a little easyier
.
with a hunter there is basically two styles of pvp, you can be a very effective drain team when paired with a disc priest, both of you are resistent to CC and have powerful mana drains, if you go drain you really have to be marks. or you can go burst with a ele shammy. My rogue/disc priest comp just could not beat this team, if you want this combo you really have to be BM. All classes have a cookie cutter spec/team role. Some classes like rogues can partner with almost anyone and be good, some classes like ele shammies are only good when paired with a BM hunter in 2’s and 5’s. Find what your best combo is and play that for a rating, you can use your other two teams to play with friends
Hi guys, i need the 1600 rating for the chest, i have enough points its just our 3v3 is stuck on around 1450-1500, The setup is a sub rogue, a full epic hunter and a resto druid (Very good healing) whats gone wrong?
Aidan - Not sure which class you are in that combination. Rogues and druids are “ok” together, hunters and druids are good together. Hunters and rogues are not good together. When creating a 3v3 team, you really want to get 3 classes that typically work well when broken down into 2v2. For instance, a mage and a rogue work well in 2v2, a priest and rogue work well too. A mage and a priest are decent in 2v2. Combining the 3 is what makes the “PMR” setup good in 3v3 because all work well together.
That being said, if you are a rogue, I’d find a mage/priest to hook up with or a priest/warlock. If you’re the hunter, a drain team will be best. MM Hunter+Lock+Disc Priest. The basic premise being that the hunter and lock DPS one target down while the priest mana burns the opposing team healer and then caster DPS. At the same time, the hunter viper stings need to be set up on a focus so they get sent to the opposing team healer as well as the locks mana drains. Deplete the other teams life source (mana) and win because you will have effectively removed their healer and possibly a DPS from the match.
