World of Warcraft Hunter Pets - The Ravager
Posted on January 25th, 2008 by Gavin under General Tips, Hunter Pets
Hunters can be very picky about the pets they choose. If you’ve gotten your hands on our hunters guide we give you a full run-down of the best and not-so-good choices when it comes to actual pet abilities. Now some people may very well like pets that are not as effective statistically, and that’s fine. You should use what you like, but when you look at the numbers, there are simply some pets which really shine in certain areas.
Most hunters will use a cat. Cats are one of only two pets which get a 10% bonus to damage. Cats are also easy to feed and learn a most of the best pet skills. You can’t really go wrong with a cat, especially if you are a Beast Mastery specialization hunter. A cat will do more damage than any other pet you can have - except one.
We want to put up for your consideration the Ravager. Before the Burning Crusade expansion, cats ruled DPS, but now they have a serious rival. Ravagers look cool and have the potential to do more damage than cats. Possibly the only drawback to a Ravager instead of a cat is that they don’t get the prowl skill, but that may not be a big deal to you - especially on a PVE server.
Why are Ravagers at the top of the DPS pile? They get to use the really wicked ability Gore. Gore is an instant cast ability that uses 15 focus, and works a lot like claw (which we prefer over bite - check out our hunter guide for all the details). Even though Gore does similar base damage to claw, it has a 50% chance to do DOUBLE damage. When you average that out, it means that Gore will do 125 damage in the same amount of time as claw will do 100. When you stack the 50% chance at double damage with beast mastery hunter skills like frenzy for the critical hit bonuses, it can get seriously high.
Ravagers have a little more armor than cats, but lower health. They only eat meat and raw meat, and can learn Bite, cower, Growl, Dash, and Gore. Gore is a great skill only used by boars and ravagers. Unfortunately, for Horde players, a ravager can be a real challenge to tame before level 62 especially on PVP servers. The other problem with gore is that there are no known mobs from which to learn gore 5 or 6. So you’re stuck with Gore 4 until you get to blasted lands at level 48. Also Gore 3 is only learned from the named mob Bellygrub in Redridge Mountains; and he can be a load to handle at level 24. Overall, gore is the best offensive pet skill to have, but for horde characters, you might not want to consider a ravager until you get to outlands. Even for alliance, for 20-40 levels, your main pet attack skill is going to be way off the pace. Boosting stamina through pet training is also more expensive as far as training points than boosting armor. So we normally give pets with more stamina a better score than pets with higher armor stats.
All of that being said - it could be argued that ravagers have the ability to deal more damage than any other pet in the game. If you can be a little patient and wait for one until outlands, you might consider one if you go Beast Master. To save focus and use the really wicked DPS skill, gore, teach this guy Gore, Growl and Dash. Gore is instant cast with no cooldown, so if he gets a few double damage hits in a row, it can really be a killer. We’re not sure if giving up prowl is worth the added dps and extra points spent on stamina, but on PVE servers it may be a winner.

nice guide man i got it in a email
So I was just asking myself what pet I should get and here it is. Well, I could look up where you find a Ravager but, thought you might put it in here for all to know. So where do you find a Ravager?
Thanks for all your great advice!
Hi Gavin
Really liked your article. As a BM specced Hunter I thought I would give your advice a try, and am enjoying the apparently better DPS impact of the Ravager.
However I am intersted in your thoughts around the exact pat talent build. Gore and Dash, obviously along with Growl. No Bite. But how many levles of Stanina, how many of Armour? How many points does one reserve for resisting the various types of damamge? What is a good PvP ravager build?
Looking forward to your thoguhts.
Thaumaturgos, Hydraxis
I read your article about the pets, and have not tried the Ravager, but did have a comment on your DPS #1.
You as well as many rate the cat very high, when I have found that not only does the Vampiric Mistbat out DPS, but as well out survives the cat. I have been playing mine now since lvl 18 and have out DPSed every pet and survived every pet except one (this is from even lvls to 4 above) and that was a lvl 50 owl when mine was lvl 46, but this was when you could have the elite pets, before the nurfing of the elite pets, which mine out did anyhow.
Now I have went with one hunter that had the Ravager, but he was a survivalist spec so that is likely why my bat out done his pet, but until I have either played or teamed, or pvped against, I will not comment either way on the Ravager.
I prefer the battle boar, it can keep up with the hunter while traveling and it has the Charge ability.
yo thats nice but where r the ravagers (im a lvl 14 hunter)

I hope this can help you and nice website Gavin.
great job gavin finally someone else noticed the etremly hi dps potential of the ravager besides me. most ppl dont like them cuz they look ugly :O
Eric was one step ahead of us and gave the great links to all the available Ravagers. Most of them are on the Dranei starting area islands and again in outlands. The rest are sort of few and far between. Like we said in the article, it would probably be better to wait for one until you can tame one at level 62 in Hellfire Penninsula.
Our hunter staffer’s personal favorite is the Rip Blade Ravager. The thing that makes this ravager so cool is that it changes colors every time you summon them! Neon greens, purples and blues. Truly unique and in a very easy spot to tame just south of Toshley’s Station.
To Lynn - we’re not sure how many pets you’ve been running off and leaving behind. That seems to be a unique issue we haven’t heard of before. We’re not sure why a battle boar would be any faster than any other pet just running around. If what you meant was the skill Charge, then that is a different matter altogether.
Dan - all bats do the same damage. It would be impossible for one bat to do more damage than any other bat. Once pets are tamed all of their stats revert to set values for their type. They lose any special attributes and abilities as well.
Beyond that, Owls, Bats, Spiders and Wind Serpents are identical in all areas and share the same 7% bonus to DPS. All four of these pets have exactly the same tamed HP, Armor and everything else. Only cats and Ravagers share the 10% bonus to DPS. Not to be harsh, but it is mathematically impossible for an Owl using Bite to out DPS a cat using Claw.
We would take into account your own hunter talent points when comparing your pet damage to another hunter using a cat. Also keep in mind that damage meters can be very VERY fickle and are really rough estimates at best. In a raid you will find all ten members will have completely different numbers even if they all use the same mod. (The reason for this has to do with combat log ranges, but that’s for another article).
Anthony – Pet training is a very personal thing and will depend entirely on what you do most.
If you are raiding dungeons, then your pet needs the resists more than anything else. In raids your pet should NEVER pull agro off your main tank, and probably cannot off-tank anything either. It’s the magic damage that will do them in.
For PVP the key is armor and Stamina. Because of the fact that it costs more training points to buff health instead of armor, we’re not sure a Ravager is better than a cat for big time PVP. However, when in doubt put all the points you would have put into resists into stamina first and then armor. Also check out an Owl for PVP, they are a serious nuisance to casters because they really foul up targeting with their flying animation and still have 7% bonus to DPS along with Bite and Screech – a skill which is also great in Raids.
For solo play, a good blend of a little of everything seems to be best. That should cover you in just about every situation you could ever come across. Your pet does not have to be Uber in any one thing, but can’t be weak against any one thing either for solo play.
Hi guys..great guide. I been in a position to capture a ravenger…just wondering, when you use beast lore the dam reads 1 thing .Then when you capture it, its much lower. Whats the reason for this. How can I get the max dam from a pet? I am BM hunter spec lvl 70. BTW my son has a cat that does over 300 dam that I couldnt believe. He also a 70, BM spec. His gear is better and was wondering igf that effects it>
As soon as you tame a pet all of the stats it had in the wild revert to base values for that pet family. Thus, the difference between your beast lore readings and the info from the pet details tab.
The damage each pet does is effected by pet level, pet skills, and hunter talents. There isn’t a direct relationship between pet damage and hunter gear, but there is a correlation between hunter gear and pet life and armor.
Only BM hunters can compete for truly max pet damage. MM and SV spec pets are simply not ever going to be anywhere close. As a matter of fact, with all gear being the same between two hunters, a BM spec will do more DPS than the other two trees because of that big boost to pet damage.
Before anyone complains too much, keep in mind that we said “with the same gear!”
An Update for Lynne!
We want to clarify why your battle boar is faster than your other pets.
Apparently there is either a bug or an unannounced change in pet traveling speed since patch 2.3
It seems that pets tamed BEFORE patch 2.3 will be able to keep up with you no matter what the pet might be. But pet tamed AFTER patch 2.3 cannot.
If you were to go tame another battle boar now, it would also fall behind when you run for very long.
This explains why we didn’t understand what you were trying to say, since our hunters have all had their pets for a long time and the speed change was something we just had not seen in the game because we all trained our pets long before patch 2.3
It doesn’t seem that this problem will be going away any time soon, so you may just have to live with it.
If you recall, in patch 1.9 all pet attack speeds were normalized so all the Rake and Broken Tooth owners out there suddenly had very normal pets.
This may also be the case with pet following speeds from now on. If you have a pet from before patch 2.3, just consider yourself lucky!
hey Gavin ravagers look like sh– / but you turned me onto their stats so now im using one lol id like cats but i like gore more then scratch now - thanks
I prefer my albino crab whom i’v named Pinchy he’s got armor points that rival some warriors and easily take on 2 to 3 mobs on at a time.
what is a good pet for pvp?
Hi, great guide gavin. Just wandering where i can tame a high level bear for tanking? Need a pet with alot of armour and quite abit of health.
just a heads up that there are also 70 ravagers in Hellfire Peninsula in the lowr left hand side of the the map.
After reading this article I bit the bullet and trained one of the ugliest pets in the game lol. I now not only think he’s cute but he it the best pet I have had and I wanted to say thanks. In raids he far out dps any of my friends favourite cats but sometimes does double what they turn out. WOW!! I have kept my cat and use him for BGs (great for prowling and sticking on a flag to mind…love that trick) which he has good skills for but on raids and in instances it will only be my Ravager called Fluffy
